One analysis gives 2005 the highest complaint rate and 2020 the lowest, while another flags 2015, 2017, and 2018 based on complaints filed during each year’s first three years. Those findings are useful prompts for closer inspection—not proof that every Murano from a flagged year is unreliable.
For a used Murano, the specific vehicle’s maintenance history, recall status, and inspection results matter more than its model-year reputation. Buyers considering a 2015–2018 model should also check whether its VIN qualifies for Nissan’s CVT warranty extension.
What the Murano year rankings say
Complaint-based rankings do not measure reliability in the same way, so they point to different years. ForCar’s Murano page reports 4,868 complaints across model years 2003–2026 and compares complaints per production run. Its result, updated October 8, 2026, puts 2005 highest at 21.67 complaints per production run and 2020 lowest at 1.39. ModelYears.com uses a different window: complaints filed by the end of each model year’s third year. It flags 2015, 2017, and 2018, and cautions that its complaint count is not adjusted for sales. It associates 2015 reports with shaking or vibration and 2017–2018 reports with driver-assist errors. These are reported concerns, not diagnoses of every vehicle from those years. Other snapshots do not settle the question. Consumer Reports describes the 2024 Murano as much more reliable than other cars from the same model year; its 2017 summary says reliability is about average and lists three NHTSA recalls. In practical terms, treat 2005 as a caution under ForCar’s comparison, and give 2015, 2017, and 2018 extra scrutiny under ModelYears.com’s early-ownership complaint method. Neither source establishes a universally best or worst Murano year.
Why owner complaints are clues, not verdicts
NHTSA says consumer complaints can help it identify possible safety-defect trends when considered alongside other information. A complaint is not a confirmed defect, a failure rate, or proof that a particular problem was caused by a particular part. Use a year ranking to shape your questions for the seller and mechanic. Do not treat it as a substitute for checking the vehicle’s records, condition, and VIN-specific history.
What 2015–2018 buyers should know about CVT coverage
Nissan North America’s dealer bulletin dated October 3, 2025, covers CVTs in 2015–2018 Murano (Z52) vehicles. It extends coverage from 60 months or 60,000 miles to 84 months or 84,000 miles, whichever comes first. The bulletin describes coverage for the CVT assembly and internal components, gaskets and seals, control valve body, torque converter, cooler kit if applicable, ATCU, and TCM reprogramming. Nissan’s October 3, 2025 dealer bulletin.
Nissan said in the bulletin: “In an effort to assure customer satisfaction, demonstrate our confidence in continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), and to address customer concerns including those expressed by customers in a class action, Nissan will extend the warranty coverage on the CVT.” This is Nissan’s statement, not an independent assessment of CVT reliability.

The extension is not automatic proof of coverage for every 2015–2018 Murano. The bulletin instructs dealers to verify eligibility by VIN and notes that some owners may have opted out by excluding themselves from the class-action settlement. Terms and exclusions apply, and a dealer should confirm current eligibility and coverage for the specific vehicle. The extension is not a recall.

- Review maintenance records. Ask for dated receipts or service records, not only a seller’s verbal description of maintenance.
- Check the VIN for unrepaired recalls. Use NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup. A general search by year, make, and model can show broader recall information, but only the VIN lookup can establish whether a particular vehicle has unrepaired recalls. Recall repairs are free through the manufacturer’s dealership.
- Arrange a cold start and road test. Note warning lights, unusual noises, vibration, and how the vehicle behaves as it warms up. A test drive is useful but cannot rule out every developing issue.
- Have a qualified mechanic inspect it. For a Murano with a CVT, choose an independent mechanic familiar with Nissan CVTs or a Nissan dealer. Ask for a scan for stored codes and an assessment of transmission operation. Nissan’s bulletin directs dealer technicians to use applicable service information when diagnosing CVT concerns.
- Use an OBD-II reader only as a screening aid. A consumer reader can identify certain stored codes, but it cannot rule out internal CVT wear or replace a specialist inspection.
How to compare two used Muranos
When choosing between individual vehicles, compare the evidence that applies to each car rather than relying on a single model-year ranking:
- Documented maintenance and repair history
- VIN-specific open-recall status and proof of completed recall repairs
- For eligible 2015–2018 models, dealer confirmation of CVT-extension coverage
- Mileage, road-test behavior, stored codes, and inspection findings
- Asking price in light of the vehicle’s condition and any needed repairs
The available rankings do not combine these factors into a reliable overall score. A well-documented, well-inspected vehicle may be a better choice than a car from a year that looks favorable in a complaint comparison.
