There is no objective single “best” Mercedes-Benz: the answer changes depending on whether you value invention, racing, safety, luxury, off-road ability or design. For a history-led shortlist, these ten cars make a defensible case because each represents a distinct milestone in the marque’s story. The selection draws on Mercedes-Benz’s own 2026 vehicle-icons retrospective, so it reflects the manufacturer’s historical recognition—not an independent ranking or a verdict on reliability, affordability or today’s usability.

How this shortlist defines “best”

This is a chronological selection, not a scorecard. Each car earns its place for a particular contribution: establishing the automobile, advancing engineering, defining a Mercedes-Benz category or connecting road cars to competition. The official retrospective itself recognizes vehicles for different strengths; it does not claim that one model is best for every driver.

The list also cannot settle questions about current purchase prices, ownership costs, reliability, investment returns or everyday practicality. The cited historical sources do not provide comparative evidence on those subjects.

Ten Mercedes-Benz cars that stand out

1. Benz Patent Motor Car (1886): the beginning

The Benz Patent Motor Car is the essential starting point because Mercedes-Benz identifies it as the origin of its automotive history. Its importance is foundational: it represents the early idea of a purpose-built motor vehicle, rather than a later expression of luxury or performance. The company’s vehicle-icons retrospective places it at the beginning of a story that eventually spans passenger cars, competition and utility vehicles.

2. Mercedes 35 hp (1900): an early engineering landmark

The Mercedes 35 hp appears in the marque’s official icon list as a pioneering early model. Its strongest case is historical influence: it belongs to the formative period in which Mercedes-Benz was developing the engineering and vehicle identity that later models would build upon. The available source establishes its place in that history, rather than offering a modern comparative performance assessment.

3. Mercedes-Benz SSK (1928): pre-war sporting character

The SSK represents the brand’s pre-war sporting side. Its inclusion among Mercedes-Benz’s recognized icons makes it a useful counterpoint to the sedans and grand tourers that dominate later decades. The historical case here is its competition-era identity and period performance, not a claim that it outranks every later Mercedes in speed or driving ability.

4. Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (1954): racing roots, road-car impact

The 300 SL brings together competition heritage, distinctive engineering and lasting design recognition. Mercedes-Benz Classic traces its origins to the 1952 racing program and the road car’s debut in 1954. The production car used a tubular frame and fuel injection, details that help explain why it is remembered as more than a striking shape.

Its place on a best-ever list rests on that combination: a road-going car with a direct motorsport lineage and engineering that set it apart. Mercedes-Benz Classic’s history of the SL documents the model’s background. The full-size car’s historical reputation is separate from the quality, availability or value of any scale-model collectible.

  • Interesting pull back car: Put the car on the ground, press and hold the car body, then pull back, it will drive forward. Very funny.

5. Mercedes-Benz 600 (1963): flagship luxury

The Mercedes-Benz 600 stands for the brand’s ambition at the top of the luxury market. Its presence in the official icon retrospective makes it a fitting representative of the flagship tradition: a Mercedes-Benz conceived not merely as transport, but as an expression of comfort, technology and stature. The source supports that historical significance; it does not establish a comparative ranking of luxury cars.

6. S-Class, 126 series (1979): a documented safety milestone

The 126-series S-Class makes the shortlist for a specific reason: Mercedes-Benz says the driver airbag and seat-belt tensioner made their series-production-car world premiere in this S-Class in 1981. That is a concrete safety milestone and a strong example of how the flagship sedan served as a platform for introducing technology.

This is evidence of an important development, not proof that the 126 was the safest car of all time. Mercedes-Benz records the milestone in its 2026 vehicle-icons retrospective.

7. Mercedes-Benz G-Class (1979): utility with enduring identity

The G-Class represents a different kind of achievement: a purpose-built off-road vehicle whose identity has endured. Mercedes-Benz says production began in 1979. That long production history is the basis for its place here, alongside its importance as the marque’s off-road model family—not a claim that every G-Class generation has identical capabilities or is the best choice for every use.

8. Mercedes-Benz SL, R 129 (1989): the safety-conscious roadster

The R 129 SL brought open-top grand touring together with safety features highlighted by Mercedes-Benz, including an automatically deployable rollover bar and structural protections. The manufacturer says the bar extended in 0.3 seconds in an impending rollover. That figure describes the system’s reported deployment time, not a general measure of vehicle safety or a guarantee of protection in every crash.

The R 129 earns its place as a roadster that made safety part of its story alongside comfort and design. The SL’s broader lineage and the manufacturer’s account of its safety innovations are covered in the Mercedes-Benz Classic SL history.

9. Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II (1990): a road car shaped by touring-car racing

The Evolution II ties a compact road-going Mercedes-Benz to touring-car competition. Mercedes-Benz identifies it as a DTM homologation model and reports that 502 examples were produced. That limited production run supports its status as a special, competition-linked variant; it does not establish current market value, investment performance or rarity relative to every other Mercedes-Benz.

The manufacturer’s account of the model and its competition context appears in a 2026 Mercedes-Benz Media retrospective.

10. Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (2010): a modern performance icon

The SLS AMG represents the modern performance era in this selection. Mercedes-Benz includes it among its vehicle icons, giving the shortlist a later counterpart to the 300 SL and the earlier competition-focused models. Its case is its place in the brand’s performance history and design identity, rather than a claim that it is superior to newer AMG cars by any measured standard.

Which one is “best” for you?

Use the category that matters most to you rather than treating the list as a universal ranking:

  • For foundational history: Benz Patent Motor Car or Mercedes 35 hp.
  • For competition heritage: SSK, 300 SL Gullwing or 190 E Evolution II.
  • For luxury and innovation: 600 or 126-series S-Class.
  • For off-road identity: G-Class.
  • For open-top grand touring: R 129 SL.
  • For a modern performance icon: SLS AMG.

These are editorial lenses, not measured scores. Choosing a car to buy requires a different comparison: the specific model year and condition, service history, intended use, and current local market. The historical sources used here do not establish a best-value, most-reliable or most-practical winner.

Sources and scope

The main reference is Mercedes-Benz Group’s “Vehicle Icons from 140 years”, dated 29 January 2026. Model-specific context comes from Mercedes-Benz Classic’s “History of Mercedes SL” and Mercedes-Benz Media’s 17 August 2026 retrospective on automotive icons at Pebble Beach. These are manufacturer sources: valuable for the company’s historical record and claims, but not independent comparative testing.
