The best used Honda CR-V is usually not the newest one you can afford or the model year with the fewest internet complaints. It is the individual vehicle with a clean title, complete maintenance records, no open recalls, and a satisfactory inspection.

For most buyers, the 2016 CR-V is the safest value recommendation. The 2019 is a strong newer gas model, while 2020–2022 CR-Vs offer a more modern fifth-generation package. The 2020–2022 hybrids are worth considering for fuel economy, but they require additional hybrid-system checks. The 2017 and 2018 models are not automatic rejects, although their turbocharged engines and oil-dilution-related service history deserve close attention.

Best Honda CR-V model years at a glance

Model years Best for Why consider it Main caution
2016 Best overall value Proven fourth-generation design, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine, strong safety results Age-related wear, air-conditioning and electrical faults, rust
2019 Best newer gas model Modern interior and features with a generally strong reliability record Verify the relatively long list of recalls by VIN
2020–2022 gas Newer used CR-V buyers Refreshed fifth-generation model and good reliability history Turbo-engine and CVT maintenance still matter
2020–2022 Hybrid Fuel economy Efficient two-motor hybrid system and useful used-car pricing Check hybrid-specific recalls, warning lights and battery condition
2023–2025 Newest design and safety technology Redesigned cabin, strong crash-test performance and newer equipment Higher prices and less long-term reliability data
2017–2018 Only with excellent documentation Roomy redesign and modern turbocharged powertrains Oil-dilution, misfire and drivability-related concerns

Best overall value: 2016 Honda CR-V

The 2016 CR-V is one of the most sensible choices for a buyer who wants a dependable used SUV without paying for a nearly new vehicle. It is the final year of the fourth-generation CR-V and uses a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rather than the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine introduced in many 2017 models.

Consumer Reports rates the 2016 CR-V as more reliable than other vehicles from the same model year. Its recall history is also relatively manageable, with three recalls listed on the Consumer Reports model page at the time of its latest update.

Safety is another reason to consider it. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2015–2016 CR-V a Good rating in the original moderate-overlap frontal test. The 2016 also qualified for an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award when equipped with the required optional front-crash-prevention system and specified headlights.

What to inspect on a 2016

  • Check the oil level and ask whether the engine uses an unusual amount of oil.
  • Run the air conditioner through every setting and confirm that it blows cold.
  • Test the door locks, keyless entry, windows, sunroof and other electrical accessories.
  • Look for brake-pedal vibration, steering shake and uneven tire wear.
  • Test the battery and look for signs of battery drain.
  • Inspect the underside, subframes and brake lines for rust, especially on vehicles from snow-belt states.

Owner reports for this year mention electrical-accessory problems, battery drain, starter failures, brake wear and isolated oil-consumption or piston-ring complaints. Those reports identify items worth checking; they do not mean every 2016 CR-V has these defects.

Best newer gas model: 2019 Honda CR-V

The 2019 CR-V is a good compromise between age, equipment, purchase price and reliability. It is newer and more modern than the 2016, but it generally costs less than a low-mileage 2020–2022 model.

Consumer Reports rates the 2019 as more reliable than other vehicles from its model year. It also earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation when fitted with specified headlights and optional front-crash-prevention equipment.

The important qualification is its recall history. Consumer Reports lists seven NHTSA recalls on the 2019 model page. Reported issues include intermittent infotainment or smartphone-connection faults, engine-related complaints, leaks and isolated head-gasket reports. A recall count is not a prediction that a particular vehicle will fail, but it makes a VIN-level check essential.

How to buy a 2019 safely

  1. Get the VIN before visiting the seller.
  2. Check the VIN through NHTSA and Honda’s recall lookup tools.
  3. Ask for invoices showing that each recall repair was completed.
  4. Start the engine cold and watch for warning lights, rough running or unusual smoke.
  5. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection, preferably from a shop familiar with Hondas.

Best fuel-economy choice: 2020–2022 CR-V Hybrid

Honda introduced the CR-V Hybrid in North America for the 2020 model year. The 2020–2022 hybrids are the lower-cost used choices from the previous generation because 2023 brought a full redesign.

The hybrid makes the most sense for drivers who do a substantial amount of city or stop-and-go driving. Its fuel-economy advantage is less compelling for someone who drives mostly at steady highway speeds, and its additional components mean the inspection needs to go beyond a conventional engine and transmission check.

NHTSA recall documentation identifies fuel-pump-related campaigns involving certain 2020–2022 CR-V Hybrids. Recall information can change, so use the vehicle’s VIN rather than relying on a generic list.

Hybrid inspection checklist

  • Confirm every recall campaign by VIN, including fuel-pump-related campaigns.
  • Check for hybrid-system, powertrain or battery warning messages.
  • Make sure the vehicle starts smoothly and transitions normally between electric and gasoline operation.
  • Have a Honda-capable scan tool used during the inspection.
  • Test the 12-volt battery as well as the high-voltage hybrid system.
  • Review oil, brake-fluid, coolant and transmission-fluid service records.
  • Verify the applicable hybrid-battery warranty using the VIN and the Honda warranty booklet.

A hybrid-battery warranty does not cover every possible hybrid-system repair. Coverage varies by model year, state and vehicle history.

Best newer-generation choices: 2023–2025

The 2023 CR-V began a new generation. These models are attractive when newer safety technology, a redesigned interior and lower age matter more than purchase price or a long reliability record.

The 2023–2025 CR-V has strong crash-test results from IIHS, although the exact rating and required safety equipment can vary by test and trim. The 2023 IIHS rating and 2025 rating are useful references when comparing specific versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is a tradeoff: these vehicles have not accumulated as many years and miles as a 2016 or 2019, so long-term reliability conclusions are less certain. Consumer Reports currently describes the 2025 CR-V as more reliable than other vehicles from its model year, but lists four NHTSA recalls for that model page.

Choose a 2023–2025 if you want the newest body style and can accept a higher price. Do not choose one solely because it is newer; still inspect its service history, tires, brakes, underbody and recall status.

Years requiring the most caution: 2017–2018

The 2017 CR-V was a major redesign year and introduced the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine to many configurations. Redesign years can bring useful improvements, but they also introduce new powertrains, software and components at the same time.

Honda issued a warranty extension for certain 2017–2018 CR-Vs involving engine-oil-dilution-related drivability concerns. Honda’s bulletin describes possible fuel contamination of the engine oil, software-related concerns and possible camshaft or rocker-arm damage. For eligible vehicles, coverage was extended from the original five years or 60,000 miles to six years with unlimited mileage from the original sale date. That extension will have expired for most examples by 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A later Honda bulletin for certain 2017–2018 CR-Vs addresses misfire trouble codes, a fuel-system-too-rich code, whirling engine noise and related repairs. The problems do not affect every vehicle, but a neglected example can be an expensive gamble once the extended coverage has ended.

Reject a 2017–2018 if you find these signs

  • The engine oil smells strongly of gasoline.
  • The oil level is inexplicably rising between services.
  • The check-engine light is on, or stored misfire and fuel-system codes appear during a scan.
  • The engine makes unusual whirling, rattling or knocking noises.
  • The seller cannot document applicable software updates or repairs.
  • The seller refuses a cold start or independent inspection.

A 2017 or 2018 with clean oil, complete records, completed repairs and a good professional inspection can be reasonable. The mistake is not buying one at all costs; it is buying one without verifying its history.

Do not treat every old CR-V as an automatic avoid

Online “avoid” lists often label entire groups of older CR-Vs as bad. That is too simplistic. A 2007–2011 CR-V with severe rust, neglected fluid changes or accident damage can be a terrible purchase, while a carefully maintained example can still provide useful transportation.

How to check recalls correctly

Recall totals are not permanent. New campaigns can be added, and existing campaigns can be expanded. NHTSA documentation, for example, describes fuel-pump recall activity involving multiple Honda models and CR-V model years, including certain 2013–2023 CR-Vs and 2020 CR-V Hybrids.

Use this process before agreeing on a price:

  1. Obtain the 17-character VIN from the dashboard, driver’s doorjamb or title.
  2. Enter it into NHTSA’s Check for Recalls tool.
  3. Run the same VIN through Honda’s recall lookup system or ask a Honda dealer to check it.
  4. Confirm that each campaign is marked completed, not merely announced or open.
  5. Ask for repair orders and compare them with the recall records.

NHTSA explains that a VIN search identifies whether a particular vehicle needs a recall repair. Searching only by year, make and model provides general recall and complaint information, not a definitive result for the vehicle in front of you.

Claims about CR-V years that need context

“Never buy a 1.5-liter-turbo CR-V.”

That is too broad. The 2017–2018 oil-dilution-related concerns justify extra scrutiny, but later 1.5-liter-turbo CR-Vs should be judged by their oil level, service history, diagnostic results, recall status and inspection—not rejected solely because of the engine design.

“The 2017 CR-V is always bad.”

It is a higher-risk redesign year, not a universally defective vehicle. Honda’s service bulletins identify particular symptoms, components and eligibility conditions rather than declaring every 2017 CR-V faulty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The model year with the most complaints is automatically the worst.”

Complaint totals are influenced by sales volume, age, mileage and how likely owners are to report problems. They help identify inspection targets, but they are not a complete reliability rating. Consumer Reports uses owner-survey data across multiple trouble areas, while NHTSA recall data concerns safety campaigns rather than overall dependability.

FAQ

What is the best Honda CR-V year to buy used?

The 2016 CR-V is the best overall value for many used-car buyers because it combines a strong reliability history, a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine and good safety performance. A well-maintained 2019 is the better choice if you want a newer gas model.

Which Honda CR-V years should I avoid?

The 2017 and 2018 CR-Vs deserve the most caution because certain turbocharged models were covered by Honda warranty extensions and software updates related to oil dilution, misfires and drivability faults. Do not automatically reject them, but buy only with clean oil, complete records and a professional inspection.

Are 2020–2022 Honda CR-V Hybrids reliable?

They can be good used choices, particularly for city drivers, but inspect them differently from gas models. Check hybrid-specific recalls by VIN, warning messages, the 12-volt battery, hybrid-system scan data and service history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I avoid a Honda CR-V with an open recall?

An open recall is a reason to pause the purchase until you confirm that the repair can be completed. Use the VIN on NHTSA’s recall tool and Honda’s lookup system, then verify completion with repair records or a Honda dealer. Do not rely on model-year recall totals alone.

The Bottom Line

For most shoppers, start with a well-maintained 2016, then consider a documented 2019 or a 2020–2022 gas CR-V. The 2020–2022 hybrids are attractive for fuel economy, while 2023–2025 models offer newer technology at a higher price and with less long-term data.

The model year is only the first filter. Before buying, verify the VIN for recalls, inspect for rust and accident damage, check the oil for gasoline contamination on 2017–2018 turbo models, review service records and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection.
