The Best and Most Expensive Cars to Run in the UK

The cheapest car to run depends on what a comparison counts. See how UK rankings differ on mileage, depreciation, finance, insurance and energy costs.

Which cars are the cheapest to run? There is no single answer: a car’s purchase price, depreciation, fuel or electricity, insurance, tax and maintenance can produce very different rankings. In one three-year comparison of 10 UK best-selling models, the Volkswagen Polo came out cheapest; in a broader estimate that included finance, the Dacia Sandero was lowest and BMW i4 highest.

Those results answer different questions. The comparison that suits you depends on your mileage, driving pattern, how long you will keep the car, charging access and whether you count finance and insurance.

What does “cheap to run” actually include?

A low purchase price or strong official fuel-economy figure does not, by itself, make a car cheap to own. A useful comparison may include:

  • Energy: petrol, diesel or electricity, which varies with mileage, driving and local energy prices.
  • Depreciation: the difference between what you pay and what the car is worth when you sell it.
  • Insurance: the premium depends on the driver, location, exact car and cover.
  • Tax, servicing and repairs: costs vary by model and ownership period.
  • Finance: some estimates include borrowing costs; others do not.

Check which costs a ranking counts before comparing its result with another. A per-mile figure over three years is not interchangeable with an annual estimate based on a loan and standardised insurance assumptions.

Which cars are cheapest to run? What the rankings show

The figures below come from separate comparisons with different samples and methods. Treat each ranking as an answer within its own scope—not as a universal verdict on every version or owner.

Volkswagen Polo: lowest cost in Auto Express’s 2025 best-seller comparison

Auto Express used CAP HPI data to compare the cheapest variants of the 10 UK best-selling models of 2024 over three years and 30,000 miles. The Volkswagen Polo ranked first at 51.8p per mile; the Tesla Model Y ranked tenth at 88.7p per mile. The calculation included fuel, depreciation, servicing and maintenance, and vehicle excise duty (VED), but excluded insurance because premiums vary by individual. Read Auto Express’s comparison.

Dacia Sandero and BMW i4: lowest and highest in Quotezone’s 2026 estimate

Quotezone’s April 2026 estimate covered a sample of 50 popular and best-selling UK cars and included finance, fuel, insurance, tax and maintenance. It put the Dacia Sandero lowest at an estimated £7,715 a year and the BMW i4 highest at £24,191 a year. The figures are modelled estimates, not an individual owner’s bill; finance was the largest assumed cost in the i4 example. Quotezone estimated the sample’s average at £13,364 a year, broken down as £9,810 finance, £2,108 fuel, £990 insurance, £253 taxes and £203 maintenance. Its assumptions included a 48-month loan formula, standardised mileage and fuel calculations, category-based insurance and maintenance estimates, and second-year road tax. See Quotezone’s methods and estimates.

Small cars and EVs in Auto Express’s separate 2026 new-car list

A different Auto Express comparison ranked new cars over 36 months and 30,000 miles. It listed the Citroën Ami at 22.17p per mile, Dacia Spring at 37.56p, Leapmotor T03 at 40.16p, Renault 5 at 41.70p and Dacia Sandero at 41.74p. These are that list’s own total-cost assumptions and should not be combined with Quotezone’s annual estimates or treated as directly comparable to Auto Express’s separate 2025 best-seller analysis. Kia Niro: highest owner rating for running costs in Carwow’s survey

Carwow’s 2026 Driver Power survey asked more than 100,000 drivers about running costs and listed the Kia Niro first. That is an owner-survey result, not a calculated finding that the Niro is the cheapest car to own. Carwow also quoted individual comments describing the Niro as economical and Vauxhall’s Grandland and Frontera as cheap to run; those comments reflect the owners quoted, not all drivers. Read about Carwow’s Driver Power results.

What is the cheapest car to buy and run in the UK?

The evidence does not establish one all-purpose winner. The Dacia Sandero ranked lowest in Quotezone’s 50-car annual estimate, which included finance and insurance; the Volkswagen Polo ranked lowest in Auto Express’s comparison of 10 best-selling models, which excluded insurance. Auto Express’s separate new-car list also placed the Citroën Ami first by its own per-mile calculation. These are answers to different questions, not conflicting measurements of one identical cost.

  • 【Live Data Graphing – Spot Engine Issues in Real Time】View and log live sensor data in easy-to-read graphs with this OBD2 scanner diagnostic tool. Monitor ox- ygen sensors, fuel trims, coolant temperature, RPM, and more to spot suspicious values instantly. This obd scanner gives you professional-grade insight without the pro price tag—a feature you won’t find on basic $20 car code readers

To choose for your circumstances, compare exact trims and use the same ownership period, mileage and cost categories. A cheap-to-buy car may lose value quickly; a fuel-efficient car may not offset a higher purchase or finance cost. Ask how long you plan to keep it and whether your calculation includes depreciation, insurance and borrowing.

How mileage, fuel type and driving pattern change the result

Mileage and ownership period

At lower annual mileage, depreciation can account for a larger share of total cost because the car loses value regardless of how far it is driven. As mileage rises, fuel or electricity and maintenance carry more weight. DriveSmart’s mileage-specific comparisons discuss this shift; the balance still depends on the vehicle and assumptions used. See DriveSmart’s mileage comparisons.

Petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric

  • Petrol: may have a lower purchase price, but compare total cost over your expected mileage rather than relying on the sticker price.
  • Diesel: may suit long motorway journeys; whether it is economical for you depends on the specific model and use.
  • Hybrid: can be a useful option for urban driving, but compare the exact model’s costs and your driving pattern.
  • Electric: running costs depend on electricity prices and whether you can charge at home or work. Do not assume an EV’s energy cost without considering your charging arrangements.

Carbuyer’s 2025 guide says the Hyundai i10 1.0-litre petrol can return up to 53mpg and the Toyota Yaris up to 70mpg; it reports averaging 65mpg in its own Yaris testing. Those are guide and test claims for the named models, not guaranteed results for every driver or journey. Read Carbuyer’s guide and test context.

How to compare cars for your own budget

  1. Set your mileage and journey mix. Estimate annual miles and the share driven in town, on A-roads and on motorways.
  2. Choose a realistic ownership period. Use the same number of years for each car and account for depreciation over that period.
  3. Decide what “cost” means. Include or exclude finance and insurance consistently; add fuel or electricity, tax, servicing and repairs where the estimates provide them.
  4. Check the exact model and trim. Running costs and insurance can differ between versions of the same car.
  5. Get a personal insurance quote. A study average or insurance group is not your premium; request a quote for your driver details and intended car.
  6. For an EV, price your charging. Check whether home or workplace charging is available and use the energy prices you expect to pay.

For a practical ownership-cost checklist, cinch recommends considering insurance, economy or range, road tax, reliability and common-part costs. Those checks are useful alongside a total-cost estimate, but they do not make unrelated reliability rankings comparable. See cinch’s running-cost guide.

What “worst” means—and what these comparisons cannot prove

On the available cost figures, the BMW i4 was the highest-cost model in Quotezone’s 2026 sample, while the Tesla Model Y was highest among the 10 models in Auto Express’s 2025 best-seller comparison. Neither result establishes that the car is universally the worst to buy or drive: the studies use different samples, cost categories, time horizons and assumptions. The figures do not establish an older used car’s repair or breakdown record, either.
