At the research date of October 5, 2026, a five-year-old SUV is a 2021 model. The clearest evidence-based picks among American-brand SUVs are the Chevrolet Equinox, Buick Encore and Chevrolet Tahoe: each led a different SUV size segment in J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. This is an editorial shortlist ordered by class, not a direct contest across sizes—the study names segment leaders, not one overall winner. “American” here means an American automotive brand; the evidence cited does not establish where these specific vehicles were assembled.
How to read this reliability ranking
J.D. Power’s 2024 VDS reports dependability results for three-year-old vehicles, which corresponds to the 2021 model year. Its findings support three segment winners, but do not provide a common cross-class score that would show whether a Tahoe is more dependable than an Equinox or Encore. The order below groups the picks by segment rather than claiming a measured overall ranking.
A segment award reflects reported experience across vehicles and owners; it is not a guarantee about a particular used SUV. Nor does it establish that every trim, powertrain, or individual example will perform like the segment result.
The strongest-supported 2021 American-brand SUV picks
1. 2021 Chevrolet Equinox — compact SUV
J.D. Power’s 2024 VDS identifies the Equinox as the highest-ranked compact SUV among the 2021 vehicles assessed. It is the best-supported compact-class choice in this shortlist. The award is specific to the compact SUV segment; it does not establish that the Equinox outranks winners in other size classes. J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.

- Motormax Premium American Classics
- 1932 Ford Coupe Hard Top
- 1:24 scale diecast collectible model car
- diecast metal with openable doors, hood & trunk, workable steering, and free wheels
- This Ford Coupe measures 7"L x 2.75"W x 2.5"H
2. 2021 Buick Encore — small SUV
The Encore led J.D. Power’s small SUV segment in the same study. “Small SUV” is a separate category from “compact SUV” in the study, so this result should not be merged with the Equinox’s compact-class award or treated as a head-to-head comparison. J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.
3. 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe — large SUV
The Tahoe was the large SUV segment leader. That makes it the supported large-class pick here, not a claim that it scored higher overall than the Equinox or Encore. J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.

What the evidence does—and does not—say
These results are useful for narrowing a search by size, but they are not model-level numerical scores for every American-brand 2021 SUV. The available evidence does not support an ordered top-five list or a precise ranking across all American SUVs. Consumer Reports’ model-specific pages also illustrate why brand nationality alone is a poor reliability shortcut:
- The 2021 Buick Envision is described as having about average reliability compared with other cars from that model year; Consumer Reports reports two recalls on its page. Consumer Reports: 2021 Buick Envision reliability.
- The 2021 Cadillac XT5 is described as less reliable than other cars from the same model year; Consumer Reports reports two recalls on its page. Consumer Reports: 2021 Cadillac XT5 reliability.
Consumer Reports’ 2021 annual reliability survey covered more than 300,000 vehicles from model years 2000 to 2021, according to its press release. That figure describes the vehicles covered by its member survey; it is not a count of American SUVs or a random sample of all U.S. owners. Its findings use a different dataset and methodology from J.D. Power’s VDS, so the two should not be blended into a synthetic score. The release’s mention of the Envision as a category standout belongs to that survey context, not a current five-year-old SUV ranking. Consumer Reports’ 2021 reliability release.

What dependability studies measure
J.D. Power’s 2021 VDS explains its measure as problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) reported by original owners of three-year-old vehicles, with a lower score indicating higher dependability. That study covered 2018 model-year vehicles, so it is useful context for the measure—not direct evidence about 2021 SUVs. The study included 33,251 original owners and was fielded from July through November 2020. Its reported industry average of 121 PP100 and SUV average of 122 PP100 apply to that study of 2018 vehicles, not to the 2021 Equinox, Encore, Tahoe, or other 2021 models. J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study.
Dependability is also broader than mechanical breakdowns. J.D. Power vice president of global automotive Dave Sargent said, “If an owner can’t rely on a system to work as they expect, it is also considered a lack of dependability.” That definition includes technology-function problems as well as other reported issues. The 2021 study’s explanation clarifies the measure, but its figures should not be mistaken for results from the 2024 study.

How to choose among the three
Start with the size you need, not the order of the awards. The segment results identify a leader within each class; the reliability evidence does not decide which size or configuration suits your use.
