For a 2026 U.S. shopper, 2023-model-year EVs are a useful starting point—but the right choice depends on where you charge, how far you drive, and the specific car’s trim, mileage, history, battery condition, and remaining warranty. The Chevrolet Bolt is a strong value for home-charging commuters; the Hyundai Kona Electric adds compact-crossover practicality; the Hyundai Ioniq 5 suits buyers who want more space and faster charging; the Tesla Model 3 is a sedan with Supercharger access; and the Audi e-tron offers a more premium cabin in exchange for shorter range.
“Three years old” is shorthand, not a precise age: model-year timing and the vehicle’s first-sale date determine how long it has actually been on the road. Treat these recommendations as a shortlist by use case, not a reliability ranking or a guarantee that every example is a good buy.
How to choose a used EV around three years old
Start with your charging routine and typical trips, then compare actual vehicles with similar trims, mileage, condition, title status, and warranty. EPA range figures below are new-vehicle estimates, not promises of the range a used example will deliver today. Battery condition, weather, speed, cabin heating or cooling, and driving habits affect usable range.
- Mostly local driving with home charging: The Bolt EV or Bolt EUV can offer compelling value if its range and slower public fast charging fit your routine.
- A small crossover: Consider the Kona Electric, checking which model year and version you are evaluating.
- More room and quicker charging: The Ioniq 5 is worth a look, but its range varies considerably by configuration.
- A sedan and access to Tesla’s charging network: The Model 3 is a strong candidate; a 2023 car does not include the substantial 2024 update.
- A luxury-oriented cabin: The Audi e-tron brings standard all-wheel drive and upscale equipment, but its range is shorter than the other candidates here.
Best used EVs to consider by use case
The price figures in the table are approximate averages reported by the Associated Press from Edmunds in 2026. Each covers a range of model years, so it is not a current local quote or a prediction of what a particular car should cost. Compare nearby listings with matching trim, mileage, condition, title, and warranty before deciding. Range figures are EPA estimates when new, as reported by Edmunds via AP in 2026.

| Model | Best fit | Range and charging considerations | Reported average price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Bolt EV / Bolt EUV | Value and local driving | Up to 259 EPA miles for the Bolt EV and 247 for the EUV when new. Public fast charging is a weakness, making home charging especially useful. | About $18,000 across 2021–2023 examples; broad cross-year average, not a current local quote. |
| Hyundai Kona Electric | Compact-crossover value | More than 250 miles of maximum EPA-estimated range when new, according to Edmunds. The 2024 redesign added space and technology; Edmunds judged 2022–2023 models a better value and better performer in its real-world range test than the newer model. | About $19,000 across 2022–2024 examples; broad cross-year average, not a current local quote. |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Roomier crossover and charging capability | The standard-range version is listed at 220 EPA miles; single-motor versions reach up to 303 miles when new. Range depends on configuration. | About $25,000 across 2022–2024 examples; broad cross-year average, not a current local quote. |
| Tesla Model 3 | Sedan and Supercharger access | Edmunds highlights Supercharger access. Range depends on the specific version; check the exact car’s configuration and listing rather than assuming one figure covers every Model 3. | About $26,000 across 2022–2024 examples; broad cross-year average, not a current local quote. |
| Audi e-tron | Premium cabin and standard all-wheel drive | The 2023 model has an EPA-estimated 226 miles when new. The tradeoff is luxury-oriented equipment for less range. | About $34,000 across 2022–2024 examples; broad cross-year average, not a current local quote. |

Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV: best for value and local driving
The Bolt EV and longer, more crossover-like Bolt EUV are appealing when purchase cost matters and you can charge at home or work. Their maximum EPA-estimated ranges when new—259 miles for the EV and 247 for the EUV—are not a measure of an individual used car’s current battery capacity. Their main compromise is weaker public fast charging, which can make frequent long-distance trips less convenient. The 2022–2023 models brought updated styling and technology.

Hyundai Kona Electric: best compact-crossover value
The Kona Electric suits shoppers who want a nimble compact crossover and more than 250 miles of maximum EPA-estimated range when new. The 2024 redesign added space and technology, but Edmunds considered the 2022–2023 models a better value and a better performer than the newer model in its own real-world range test. That comparison is Edmunds’ assessment, not a guarantee for every vehicle or driving condition. Verify the exact version and check battery and recall history.
Hyundai Ioniq 5: best for space and charging capability
The Ioniq 5 offers a roomier cabin, a user-friendly interior, and quick charging. Do not assume all versions have the same range: the standard-range variant is listed at 220 EPA miles, while single-motor versions reach up to 303 miles when new. Confirm the trim and drivetrain on the exact vehicle, and weigh the range you need against the configuration and price.

Tesla Model 3: best sedan candidate
The Model 3 combines sedan packaging with access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, which may be valuable for drivers who take longer trips. The 2024 model received a substantial update; a 2023 example may be appealing at a lower price, but it does not get those newer changes. Compare the exact version, equipment, condition, and warranty rather than treating all model years as equivalent.
Audi e-tron: best for a premium cabin
The e-tron is the luxury-leaning option here, with standard all-wheel drive and upscale equipment. Its 2023 EPA-estimated range is 226 miles when new, so the tradeoff is clear: a more premium experience in exchange for less range. Make sure the vehicle’s actual range and your charging access work for your routine before prioritizing its cabin.

What to check before buying a used EV
Battery condition and realistic range
Ask whether the seller can provide a battery-health report or arrange a qualified diagnostic. A dashboard’s estimated range at full charge can help with context, but it is not a direct battery-capacity measurement. Kelley Blue Book author Chris Hardesty explains: “You can also charge the used electric car fully and look at its estimated range, but don’t treat that number as a direct measurement of battery capacity.” Temperature, recent driving, and climate-control use affect that estimate. Consider whether the range you observe is adequate for your actual trips.
Warranty coverage and transferability
Ask the automaker to confirm coverage by VIN, and read the warranty booklet for the vehicle’s model year. Check what remains, whether coverage transfers to you, and whether a battery-capacity threshold applies. Warranty terms vary by brand, model, and year, so do not assume that one manufacturer’s terms apply to another car.

Check open recalls, vehicle-history records, and available service records for the exact car. Have its tires, brakes, suspension, and other wear items inspected. EVs avoid many engine-related services but still need maintenance and can have costly wear or repair needs.
Charging access and included equipment
Map charging options on your regular routes and any longer trips you expect to take. Public fast charging matters more if you frequently travel long distances; home or workplace charging can make a vehicle with weaker fast charging a sensible daily driver. Charging speed varies with the car, charger, temperature, and state of charge. If you plan to install a Level 2 home charger, first check the car’s connector, home wiring, electrical capacity, and installation requirements. Ask which charging cable and other accessories are included with the specific vehicle, and verify their condition and compatibility.
Actual purchase price
Compare local listings with similar trim, mileage, condition, title status, and warranty. The broad averages listed above cover multiple model years and are not live local-market quotes; an individual car’s price needs to be judged against comparable vehicles where you are shopping.
Federal used-EV credit: do not count it in a 2026 purchase
The IRS says the previously owned clean vehicle credit is unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A buyer purchasing in 2026 should not include that federal credit in the purchase calculation. Before the cutoff, qualifying purchases generally had to be dealer sales priced at or below $25,000, involve a vehicle at least two model years old, and meet buyer-income and other eligibility rules; the credit was up to 30% of the sale price, capped at $4,000. Those were historical rules, not a current offer. State, local, utility, and other programs are not established here, so verify any possible assistance with the relevant program before relying on it. See the IRS used clean vehicle credit page.
