For the United States, 2021 was the final model year of the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series—the J200, and the last generation of the nameplate sold here before its return for 2024. “Base” did not mean stripped-down: Toyota’s 2021 model-year specifications describe a V8-powered, three-row-capable SUV with full-time four-wheel drive and substantial comfort and safety equipment. The end of the US J200 era, however, was not the end of global Land Cruiser production.
Was 2021 the last year of the Land Cruiser J200 in the US?
Yes. Toyota’s 2021 US-market announcement covered the final model year of the 200 Series in the United States. Toyota’s global timeline places the generation’s production span from September 2007 to spring 2021, with the 300 Series named as its successor. Toyota Global’s 2021 announcement describes the redesigned 300 Series as the successor to the 200 Series.
The distinction is geographic: the J200 ended as a US-market Land Cruiser, but Toyota’s global production history continued into the 300 Series. In 2023, Toyota called the 200 Series the last generation sold in the States and said the Land Cruiser would return to North America for the 2024 model year after a three-year hiatus. That makes “the last US J200” more accurate than saying the Land Cruiser disappeared worldwide.
What made the base 2021 Land Cruiser more than a bare-bones trim?
Toyota’s published specifications for the US-market 2021 model pair a 5.7-liter DOHC V8, rated at 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque, with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Its full-time four-wheel-drive system includes a TORSEN limited-slip locking center differential and a two-speed transfer case with selectable low range. Toyota also lists body-on-frame construction, a maximum tow rating of 8,100 pounds, and equipment intended for low-speed and uneven-terrain driving. These are manufacturer-published figures and descriptions, not independent test results. Toyota’s 2021 model-year announcement is the source for the specifications and equipment.

Toyota’s release also lists Toyota Safety Sense P, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, along with ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power moonroof and four-zone automatic climate control. Those published features explain why the base model should not be described as an austere entry-level off-roader.
How did the base model differ from the 2021 Heritage Edition?
The Heritage Edition brought distinctive styling rather than a different generation: Toyota described a black-accented grille, bronze BBS wheels, vintage-style exterior badging and specific exterior colors. It launched for model year 2020 with a two-row-only layout. For 2021, Toyota added an optional third row to the Heritage Edition, matching the three-row arrangement available on the base model. What replaced the J200, and when did the Land Cruiser return?
Toyota identifies the 300 Series as the J200’s successor, with the global transition occurring in spring 2021. North American availability followed a different timeline: Toyota announced the Land Cruiser’s return for model year 2024 after a three-year hiatus. Toyota framed the new model as a return to a rugged origin and described it as more accessible in price; those are Toyota’s stated positioning claims, not an independent comparison of the generations.
