The 382-hp Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 has strong owner-rated reliability sentiment, but there is no robust long-term failure-rate study establishing how dependable this generation is. Its used price depends heavily on the individual car: Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 US reference prices are $32,400 for a 2020 and $37,300 for a 2021. For a buyer, service records, an independent inspection and a VIN recall check matter more than a blanket reliability verdict.
Which CLA 45 is the 382-hp model?
It is the second-generation Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 announced in 2019. Mercedes-Benz specifies a newly developed 2.0-liter M139 turbocharged four-cylinder, an eight-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with torque control. The launch specifications are 382 hp, 354 lb-ft, an estimated 0–60 mph time of 4.0 seconds and a 155-mph electronically limited top speed. The optional AMG Driver’s Package raises the stated top-speed limit to 168 mph. Mercedes-Benz’s 2019 launch announcement provides those figures.
For the 2021 US model, Mercedes-Benz’s quick-reference guide lists fuel economy of 20 mpg city, 29 highway and 23 combined, and repeats the estimated 4.0-second 0–60 mph figure. Specifications and equipment vary by model year and market. Do not confuse this 382-hp car with later CLA 45 S models rated at 416 hp in US materials. The 2021 CLA quick-reference guide is the source for the US figures.
How reliable is the CLA 45?
The available evidence does not establish a definitive long-term reliability rate for the 382-hp generation. Kelley Blue Book shows a 4.8/5 reliability rating for the 2021 Mercedes-AMG CLA, but that is consumer sentiment—not a measured rate of engine, transmission or electrical failures over time. Individual owner discussions report differing experiences and are anecdotal, not a basis for predicting what will happen to a particular car. Kelley Blue Book’s 2021 consumer reviews and public discussions at r/AMG and a 2021 CLA 45 buying thread do not supply a model-wide failure rate.

The M139 engine and DCT are performance-focused components, but the specifications alone do not prove trouble-free durability. Likewise, inspection prompts such as modifications, hard use, leaks or uneven tire wear should be assessed on the individual vehicle; they are not established here as universal CLA 45 defects.
What to check before buying
- Ask for complete maintenance invoices and check that service is current for the exact model year and mileage.
- Arrange an independent inspection with a Mercedes-AMG-qualified shop, including a scan of the car’s control systems.
- Look for modifications, collision repairs, warning lights, leaks, mismatched tires and uneven tire wear; ask the inspector to assess any findings.
- Confirm remaining factory or certified pre-owned warranty, including exclusions and transfer rules for the car’s market.
Check recall status by VIN
NHTSA recall report 21V-354 lists 2020–2021 CLA45 AMG vehicles among those covered. The report does not establish whether an individual car’s recall repair is complete. Check the specific VIN and ask for repair documentation. NHTSA’s Part 573 recall report identifies the recall; the VIN check and records establish the status of the car you are considering.

How to judge a specific asking price
- Compare same-year CLA 45s in the same region, matching as closely as possible for mileage, options, title status and condition.
- Account for accident history, maintenance documentation, modifications, tire and brake condition, seller type and any remaining warranty.
- Get an out-the-door quote and compare it with local listings and a vehicle-specific valuation. A listing or guide price is not the full purchase cost.
What should you budget for ownership?
Edmunds estimates a 2021 CLA 45’s five-year True Cost to Own at $63,747, assuming 15,000 miles annually. Its estimate includes $8,792 in maintenance, $8,472 in repairs and $17,124 in depreciation. These are Edmunds projections, not a guaranteed bill for a particular owner or a reliability statistic. Insurance, fuel, taxes, financing, annual mileage and local labor rates can change the result. See Edmunds’ 2021 CLA 45 True Cost to Own estimate for its breakdown.
