In RV Industry Association (RVIA) classification, there are three basic motorhome types—not four: Type A, Type B, and Type C. Consumer guides commonly call them Class A, Class B, and Class C. The most reliable way to tell them apart is by the chassis they are built on.

Why there are three basic motorhome classes, not four

RVIA’s classification material identifies three basic motorhome types: A, B, and C. Its membership material uses “Type,” while its consumer guide uses “Class”; the matching descriptions support treating Type A and Class A, for example, as corresponding labels—not separate categories. The sources consulted do not establish a fourth basic RVIA class.

Terms such as “Super C” and “Class B+” may appear in consumer and marketing language, but they should not be presented as additional official RVIA classes on the basis of these definitions.

How the three classes differ

Consumer label Chassis construction General consumer description
Class A (Type A) Bare motor vehicle chassis Generally the roomiest motorhome type, according to RVIA’s RV Types and Terms guide.
Class B (Type B) Automotive-grade van chassis Commonly called a van camper; RVIA says it drives like a family van.
Class C (Type C) Cutaway automotive-grade truck chassis May have an over-cab sleeping area; RVIA describes its amenities as similar to Type A.

The chassis definitions come from RVIA’s June 2025 classification material. The consumer descriptions are broad category cues, not promises about every model or floorplan.

Non‑woven material is thin, brittle and easily degraded by sunlight, only for short‑term temporary coverage.
  • Nighttime reflective strip: Bright reflective strips along all edges improve visibility in dark or low-light areas, keeping your RV easily seen and fully protected day and night.

What to compare when choosing a motorhome

Class labels are a useful first filter, but they do not tell you exactly how a particular motorhome will fit your travel needs. Compare the model’s own specifications and layout in these areas:

  • Dimensions and layout: Check the stated exterior dimensions and whether the interior arrangement suits how you plan to travel.
  • Sleeping arrangement: Confirm the number and type of beds, and whether they work for the people who will use them.
  • Travelers and driving: Consider who will travel in it and how comfortable you are driving and parking a vehicle of its size.
  • Amenities and specifications: Review the specific equipment and capacities listed by the manufacturer rather than assuming they follow from the class name.

RVIA’s consumer guide gives category-level sleeping maxima of up to ten for Class A, up to four for Class B, and up to eight for Class C. These are guide descriptions, not guaranteed capacities for a specific model or year. Verify the manufacturer’s specifications for the motorhome you are considering.

Is a Class B motorhome the same as a campervan?

RVIA’s consumer material commonly calls Class B motorhomes “van campers,” and its construction definition describes Type B as built on an automotive-grade van chassis. That explains why the terms are often used together. But a vehicle advertised as a campervan does not necessarily meet the same classification or construction definition, so check its specifications rather than relying on the label alone.

What RVIA means by “motorhome”

RVIA defines a motorhome as a recreational vehicle built on a self-propelled motor vehicle chassis. Its broader RV description says recreational vehicles are primarily designed as temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, or seasonal use. RVIA states: “RVs are NOT designed for permanent or residential living.”
