The 2027 Kia Telluride’s turbocharged four-cylinder makes less peak horsepower than the outgoing Telluride V6, but Car and Driver’s tested AWD Telluride reached 60 mph sooner than its tested AWD 2026 Hyundai Palisade V6. The comparison is specific to those test vehicles: it does not establish that every Telluride is quicker, or that the new Telluride accelerates more slowly than the old one.
What the headline means—and what it doesn’t
“Slower than its old V6” refers to peak horsepower, not a measured old-versus-new acceleration result. Kia rates the 2027 nonhybrid Telluride turbo-four below the 2025 Telluride V6 in horsepower. Separately, Car and Driver recorded a quicker 0–60 mph time for its tested 2027 Telluride than for its tested 2026 Palisade V6.

Those are two different comparisons. The available figures do not show a controlled, same-method acceleration test of the 2025 and 2027 Tellurides, so they cannot establish which generation is quicker from a stop.

Kia’s U.S. specifications list the 2027 nonhybrid Telluride’s 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder at 274 hp at 5,800 rpm. The 2025 Telluride’s 3.8-liter V6 is rated at 291 hp at 6,000 rpm—a 17-hp advantage for the old V6. Kia’s 2027 specifications and 2025 specifications identify those model-year ratings.

Car and Driver reports 311 lb-ft of torque for the new turbo-four, compared with 262 lb-ft for the outgoing V6. That is 49 lb-ft more peak torque for the new engine, despite its lower peak horsepower. The torque comparison is reported by Car and Driver; Kia’s cited 2025 specification page establishes the old V6’s horsepower rating, not that torque figure. What happened in Car and Driver’s Palisade comparison
In Car and Driver’s reported 0–60 mph tests, the AWD 2027 Kia Telluride X-Line SX Prestige took 7.4 seconds, while the AWD 2026 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy with its naturally aspirated V6 took 8.0 seconds. The Telluride was 0.6 second quicker in that tested pair.

The Palisade had 13 more rated horsepower in this comparison, while the Telluride had 51 lb-ft more reported torque. The figures and result belong to the tested configurations, not every trim or drivetrain. Car and Driver’s test and comparison coverage provide the vehicle-specific context: its Telluride-versus-Palisade test numbers and its comparison page.
The higher torque figure is useful context, but the available evidence does not establish that torque alone caused the Telluride’s quicker result. The tests were not a controlled, same-day comparison across all trims and conditions.

Why other published acceleration times differ
Other outlets report different results, which is why the Car and Driver times should not be treated as universal specifications. Consumer Reports reports an 8.3-second 0–60 mph time for its 2027 Telluride road test. Edmunds’ comparison, published by the Associated Press, reports 8.1 seconds for the Telluride and 8.8 seconds for the Palisade.

Keep each outlet’s figures together. Pairing one publication’s Telluride time with another publication’s Palisade time would create a head-to-head result that neither test established. Differences among published times do not, by themselves, identify a single cause or prove that one result is wrong.

How to read the comparison when shopping
- For the engine change: the 2027 nonhybrid Telluride has less rated peak horsepower than the 2025 V6 model, but Car and Driver reports more peak torque for the turbo-four.
- For the Palisade comparison: Car and Driver’s tested AWD Telluride was quicker to 60 mph than its tested AWD Palisade V6.
- For another trim or drivetrain: these times do not predict its result. The vehicles tested were specific AWD trims, and the published figures are not a universal acceleration guarantee.
Kia’s 2027 Telluride introduction also notes that the redesigned range includes a hybrid. The engine-output and acceleration comparison here concerns the nonhybrid turbo-four, not the hybrid model.
