The 2026 Toyota 4Runner lineup has nine U.S. grades, but the real decision is not simply which trim has the longest equipment list. Buyers need to compare the gasoline or hybrid powertrain, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, seating and configuration, suspension and tire hardware, and the balance between comfort and off-road equipment.
The 2026 Toyota 4Runner lineup has nine U.S. grades: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. They are not nine nearly identical versions. The important differences are the engine, drivetrain, seating and configuration, suspension and tire hardware, and whether the 4Runner is designed primarily for pavement, trails, luxury-duty, high-performance off-roading, or overlanding.

- i-FORCE gasoline: up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque.
- i-FORCE MAX hybrid: up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.
The gasoline i-FORCE engine is standard on SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited. Toyota makes i-FORCE MAX available on TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited. The hybrid is standard on Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.
Toyota describes rear-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, and full-time four-wheel drive across the lineup. All i-FORCE MAX models come with four-wheel drive. Limited and Platinum use full-time four-wheel drive with an electronically locking center differential in the applicable configurations. Because equipment can vary by grade, engine, and drivetrain selection, buyers should confirm the exact configuration on the vehicle’s window sticker or Toyota’s live configurator rather than assuming that every version of a grade has the same system.
SR5: the straightforward starting point
SR5 is the value-oriented entry to the 2026 4Runner range. It is available with rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive, making it the logical place to start for shoppers who want the sixth-generation 4Runner’s basic utility without immediately paying for specialized suspension, luxury equipment, or expedition accessories.
Standard listed equipment includes an 8-inch multimedia screen, LED headlamps and fog lamps, a power rear liftgate window, Smart Key, and a 7-inch color multi-information display. SR5 is the grade to examine first if your use is primarily commuting, family duty, road trips, and occasional unpaved roads rather than regular technical trail driving.
TRD Sport and TRD Sport Premium: road-oriented performance and style
TRD Sport
TRD Sport is not the trail-focused alternative to SR5. Its emphasis is a sportier road-going presentation and suspension tuning. Toyota lists a sport-tuned suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, a gloss-black hood scoop, automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and Qi wireless charging.
That equipment makes TRD Sport the better fit for a buyer who values appearance, on-road behavior, and larger wheels more than underbody protection, all-terrain tires, or low-speed trail-control hardware. The 20-inch wheel-and-tire setup is also a different priority from the smaller wheels and taller all-terrain tires used by the off-road grades.
TRD Sport Premium
TRD Sport Premium keeps the road-oriented Sport formula but adds a more upscale cabin and technology package. Toyota lists SofTex-trimmed power seats, a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, JBL Premium Audio, a JBL FLEX portable speaker, Panoramic View Monitor, a hands-free power liftgate, a TRD shift knob, and a heated steering wheel.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose it when you like the appearance and suspension direction of TRD Sport but do not want the more basic cabin and screen package. It should not be confused with TRD Off-Road Premium: the two Premium grades add comfort and technology to different underlying missions.
TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium: the trail-focused middle of the lineup
TRD Off-Road
TRD Off-Road is the meaningful step up for buyers who specifically want factory trail hardware. Toyota lists high-strength underbody protection, 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control.
Those features define the difference between TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road. TRD Sport is the road-oriented performance choice; TRD Off-Road is the trail-oriented hardware choice. If your planned use includes rocky tracks, loose surfaces, or regular off-pavement travel, start the comparison here rather than paying for Sport trim and trying to recreate the Off-Road equipment afterward.
TRD Off-Road Premium
TRD Off-Road Premium adds comfort and technology to the Off-Road foundation. Listed equipment includes a Multi-Terrain Monitor, SofTex-trimmed power seats, a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, JBL Premium Audio, a JBL FLEX portable speaker, a hands-free power liftgate, a TRD shift knob, and a heated steering wheel.
Toyota makes i-FORCE MAX available on TRD Off-Road Premium. The hybrid version also includes a standard 2,400-watt AC power supply in the cabin and cargo area. That power outlet is particularly relevant to buyers who use the vehicle for camping or remote trips, although it does not by itself turn this grade into an overlanding-specific model.

Limited: the comfort-focused 4Runner
Limited prioritizes cabin comfort and everyday refinement over the specialized hardware of TRD Pro and Trailhunter. Toyota lists heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats, a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, JBL Premium Audio with JBL FLEX, an available digital rearview mirror, a power moonroof, and available power-extending running boards.
i-FORCE MAX is available on Limited, and Toyota identifies full-time four-wheel drive for the relevant configuration. Limited is therefore a useful choice for shoppers who want hybrid performance and four-wheel-drive utility without selecting a grade built around high-clearance trail equipment or expedition accessories.
Platinum: the premium road-and-utility grade
Platinum is the top luxury-oriented grade in the standard lineup. i-FORCE MAX is standard, and Toyota identifies full-time four-wheel drive with an electronically locking center differential for Platinum.

Its standard hybrid powertrain and four-wheel-drive arrangement may appeal to buyers who want a well-equipped 4Runner for daily driving, travel, towing-related duties, and general utility. However, the name alone does not mean it has the specialized suspension, tire, intake, rack, or recovery-oriented equipment listed for the dedicated off-road grades.
TRD Pro: the high-performance off-road grade
TRD Pro is exclusively powered by i-FORCE MAX. Its listed hardware includes TRD-tuned FOX QS3 adjustable shocks with rear remote reservoirs, a TRD performance air intake, and 33-inch Toyo tires on 18-inch black alloy wheels.
This is the 4Runner for buyers who want Toyota’s factory high-performance off-road direction rather than simply a comfortable SUV with four-wheel drive. The FOX QS3 suspension and 33-inch tire package distinguish it from TRD Off-Road, while its mission differs from Trailhunter’s expedition emphasis.
Trailhunter: the factory overlanding direction
Trailhunter is also exclusively powered by i-FORCE MAX, but it is not simply a more expensive TRD Pro. Toyota configures it around overlanding and longer-duration exploration.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Its listed equipment includes Old Man Emu shocks, a low-profile high-mount air intake, 33-inch Toyo tires on 18-inch bronze-finished wheels, an onboard air compressor, RIGID Industries color-selectable LED fog lamps, an ARB roof rack, and a bronze Toyota heritage grille with an integrated LED light bar.
The distinction is important: TRD Pro is the high-performance off-road grade, while Trailhunter is the factory expedition-style grade. Choose between them based on the equipment you actually need. Trailhunter’s rack, compressor, high-mount intake, and lighting direction are more closely tied to carrying gear and traveling farther from paved roads. TRD Pro’s identity centers more directly on performance-oriented off-road suspension and hardware.
Which 2026 4Runner grade should you choose?
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost entry and normal daily use | SR5 | It is the straightforward value grade and offers rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive. |
| Sportier styling and road use | TRD Sport | Its suspension and wheel package are aimed at road-oriented performance and appearance. |
| Sport styling plus premium convenience | TRD Sport Premium | It adds SofTex seats, the larger screen, JBL audio, camera technology, and other comfort features. |
| Factory trail equipment | TRD Off-Road | It adds underbody protection, Bilstein shocks, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and trail controls. |
| Trail equipment with a nicer cabin | TRD Off-Road Premium | It combines the Off-Road direction with premium seating, audio, screens, and convenience features. |
| Comfort-first ownership | Limited | It emphasizes leather-trimmed seating, available convenience equipment, and an available hybrid powertrain. |
| Premium utility and standard hybrid power | Platinum | It combines standard i-FORCE MAX with a premium-oriented equipment strategy. |

| Overlanding and expedition-style travel | Trailhunter | It includes an onboard compressor, ARB roof rack, high-mount intake, and other factory exploration equipment. |
Projected fuel-economy figures: read the fine print
Toyota’s brochure includes projected EPA estimates that vary with grade, drivetrain, and powertrain. The published examples include 20 city/26 highway/22 combined mpg for certain rear-wheel-drive gasoline versions, 19 city/25 highway/21 combined mpg for certain four-wheel-drive gasoline versions, and 23 city/24 highway/23 combined mpg for several hybrid grades.
These are manufacturer-published projected figures, not a promise that every 2026 4Runner will achieve them. Toyota’s brochure noted that EPA estimates were not available when it was published, and actual mileage varies with configuration, traffic, weather, tires, cargo, terrain, and driving habits. Recheck the final EPA rating for the specific vehicle before publication or purchase.
2026 4Runner pricing: use a dated figure
Pricing is especially easy to misstate because Toyota’s published and live-shopping figures can differ. Toyota’s November 5, 2025 newsroom announcement listed a starting MSRP of $41,570, plus a $1,450 Delivery Processing and Handling charge. During the research pass, Toyota’s live configurator displayed a $42,070 starting MSRP.

Utilizing 3D technology, they accurately capture original vehicle data, precisely replicating the original dimensions. 4Runner Floor mats Customization includes front and rear floor mats. - SECURE BUCKLE DESIGN & NON-SLIP GRIP: Back of the Floor Mats features a built-in buckle fixation that locks firmly in place, preventing unwanted movement. The surface is textured with anti-slip ridges for enhanced traction.
- TPE MATERIAL: Crafted from high-quality, odorless TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) that is soft to the touch yet highly durable. It excels in extreme temperatures, resisting deformation in both scorching heat and freezing cold to ensure long-lasting performance and shape retention.
- IMPORTANT INITIAL SETUP: It's normal for new mats to have wrinkles. HERE'S HOW TO FIX IT: 1.Let It Settle: Allow the mat 1-2 hours to relax and conform to your vehicle's floor. 2.Apply Gentle Heat: Place the floor mat in the sun or use a hair dryer until the material becomes pliable and all wrinkles smooth out.
- ALL-WEATHER PROTECTION: Engineered with reinforced raised edges and strategic channels, these floor mats lock in place and effectively contain rain, snow, mud, leaves, food spills, and other debris.
Those figures should not be merged into one definitive price. The $42,070 figure should be presented as a live-configurator figure only after it is checked immediately before publication, with a clear explanation of whether the displayed amount includes destination or delivery charges. Taxes, registration, dealer fees, options, and availability can further change the amount a buyer pays.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Standard safety and available towing technology
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all 2026 4Runner grades. Toyota lists these systems in the suite:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Road Sign Assist
- Automatic High Beams
- Proactive Driving Assist
Towing-related technology is available rather than universal. Depending on grade and configuration, Toyota highlights a trailer brake controller, digital rearview mirror, Trailer Back-Up Guide with Straight Path Assist, a simulated 360-degree view, and trailer-aware blind-spot monitoring. Confirm the exact equipment on the selected vehicle instead of assuming that every 4Runner includes every towing aid.
Accessories worth considering after choosing a grade
Floor protection depends on configuration
Once you choose a 2026 4Runner, 2026 Toyota 4Runner floor mats can be a practical first accessory, especially if the SUV will see mud, snow, sand, or camping equipment. Marketplace research identifies 2025–2026 custom-fit all-weather mats and cargo liners, but there is no basis for saying that one set fits every 2026 4Runner.
Before ordering, select the model year, grade, drivetrain, gasoline-versus-hybrid powertrain, and five-seat-versus-seven-seat layout in the seller’s fitment tool. Check the product’s return policy and verify the configuration against the vehicle information. The same warning applies to a 2025–2026 4Runner cargo liner: cargo-floor shape and seating arrangement matter.
Roof and cargo systems
Toyota’s accessory catalog lists roof racks, Thule Canyon XT roof baskets, Thule Force cargo boxes, Thule bike carriers, and Thule ski racks. These categories make particular sense for Trailhunter, TRD Pro, and owners who use a 4Runner for bikes, skis, camping, or other recreation. However, fitment and load limits can depend on the grade, roof configuration, rack hardware, and the specific accessory. Treat these as categories to investigate rather than assuming that any listed rack or carrier is compatible with every 2026 4Runner.
One important shopping distinction: nine grades versus shopping cards
Toyota’s U.S. newsroom lineup names nine grades. A live configurator may present gasoline and electrified versions as separate shopping cards or configuration paths, which can make the retail interface appear to contain more than nine choices. That does not necessarily mean Toyota has introduced additional official grades. Compare the underlying grade name, engine, drivetrain, seating layout, and equipment rather than counting configurator cards.
Bottom line
The best 2026 Toyota 4Runner is determined less by the trim ladder than by the job it must do. Choose SR5 or TRD Sport when price, everyday road use, or styling leads the decision. Move to TRD Off-Road or TRD Off-Road Premium when factory trail hardware matters. Choose Limited or Platinum for comfort-oriented utility, with Platinum making the hybrid powertrain standard. Choose TRD Pro for high-performance off-roading and Trailhunter for factory-built overlanding equipment.
Before signing a deal, verify the exact engine, drivetrain, seat count, EPA rating, MSRP and delivery-charge treatment, available towing technology, and accessory fitment for the individual vehicle. Toyota’s configurator, dealer inventory, and marketplace listings can change, so date-sensitive details should be rechecked immediately before publication or purchase.
