The 2026 Honda Prelude brings a two-motor hybrid powertrain to a sports coupe, a combination that invites comparison with the discontinued CR-Z. Honda’s materials establish the Prelude as its first electrified model wearing the Prelude name; they do not describe it as a CR-Z successor. Its most distinctive new feature is S+ Shift, a drive mode that simulates the feel of a performance eight-speed transmission.
What the Prelude has in common with the CR-Z
The comparison is about category and positioning: both are Honda coupes associated with hybrid power. Honda calls the 2026 Prelude its first electrified Prelude, and describes its powertrain as a two-motor hybrid system. That makes the CR-Z a useful historical reference for readers wondering when Honda last offered a hybrid coupe.
That resemblance does not establish a direct engineering lineage. Honda’s 2026 Prelude materials do not call the car a successor to the CR-Z or say that it revives a CR-Z feature. The evidence supports a hybrid-coupe comparison, not a claim that the two cars share a technical foundation.
How the 2026 Prelude’s hybrid system works
Honda describes a two-motor hybrid system pairing a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle direct-injection engine with a traction motor. For the U.S. 2026 model, Honda gives combined system output as 200 horsepower and lists 232 lb-ft of traction-motor torque. The separate engine and motor horsepower figures on Honda’s specifications page are component ratings; they should not be added together in place of the stated combined system output. Honda’s U.S. specifications and its 2026 Prelude press kit provide the details.
#1 Best Overall
- This plastic model requires assembly and painting. Adhesives, tools, paints, etc., sold separately
- 1/24 scale unpainted plastic model assembly kit
- Size when completed: Total length 7.4 inches (189 mm), Total width 3.4 inches (87 mm), Total height
- In addition to rooms with horizontal base panel and large LCD meter, the back of the chassis and around the feet are finished with a 3D feel
- Includes metal inlet markings such as emblems and window mask seals
Honda’s U.S. page lists EPA fuel-economy ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and 44 mpg combined. Those figures apply to the 2026 U.S. model; they are not independent road-test results.
What S+ Shift does—and what it doesn’t
S+ Shift is a simulated shift mode, not a conventional eight-speed gearbox. Honda says the system coordinates engine RPM and the traction motor to reproduce performance-style shift responses, including downshift blips, rev matching and holding a simulated gear. The press kit calls it a mode that “simulates a performance 8-speed transmission experience.”

- Number 5/5 in the Factory Fresh Set! Number 136/250 in the Overall Series!
- 1:64 Scale Diecast Toy Vehicle
- Press the S+ button on the center console to engage the feature, as described in Honda’s 2026 Prelude feature guide.
- Use the paddle shifters to request simulated shifts.
- When S+ Shift is active, the power meter changes to a tachometer display.
The mode adds a more involved, shift-like way to interact with the hybrid powertrain. It does not demonstrate that the Prelude revives a particular CR-Z transmission feature.
Chassis hardware and drive modes
Honda says the Prelude is the first hybrid-electric model to combine its two-motor hybrid powertrain with high-performance Civic Type R chassis hardware. Honda’s launch announcement identifies dual-axis strut front suspension, Prelude-tuned adaptive dampers and four-piston front brake calipers. The U.S. specifications list 13.8-inch front rotors and four selectable drive modes: Comfort, GT, Sport and Individual. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent evaluations of handling or braking. Honda’s North American announcement is dated September 4, 2025.

2026 U.S. trims, prices and fuel economy
Honda lists two U.S. trims for model year 2026. The prices below are Honda’s starting prices as shown on its specifications page; Honda says specifications are accurate at the time of posting.
| 2026 U.S. trim | Starting price | Combined system output | EPA city/highway/combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid | $42,000 | 200 hp | 46/41/44 mpg |
| Hybrid Two-Tone | $42,500 | 200 hp | 46/41/44 mpg |
These figures are for the U.S. 2026 model and come from Honda’s Prelude specifications page. The Two-Tone trim’s listed starting price is $500 higher; the page also lists the same output and EPA ratings for both trims.

Does the Prelude bring back something last seen with the CR-Z?
If “something” means a Honda hybrid coupe, the Prelude fits that description and makes the CR-Z a natural point of reference. If it means a confirmed CR-Z successor or a revived CR-Z technology, Honda’s published information does not support that stronger claim. The documented new feature is S+ Shift, Honda’s simulated performance-shift mode—not a feature Honda identifies as inherited from the CR-Z.
