The 2024 Mazda MX-5 ND3 Proves Why the Miata Is an Automotive Icon

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 ND3 proves the Miata’s iconic status through disciplined evolution: better steering, cornering confidence, infotainment, and trim choices without abandoning its naturally aspirated, rear-drive roadster formula.

Yes—the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Miata, commonly called the ND3 by enthusiasts, proves the Miata’s iconic status precisely because it does not chase headline numbers. It remains a compact, naturally aspirated, rear-wheel-drive, two-seat roadster with a manual transmission available across its enthusiast-oriented trims. Mazda used the 2024 refresh to correct long-standing weaknesses—particularly steering feel, cornering composure, infotainment usability, and trim differentiation—without diluting the original idea.

The ND3 is not a new generation, a turbocharged reinvention, or a dramatically faster Miata. It is the most polished version of the fourth-generation car, and that restraint is the point. After more than three decades, the MX-5 still makes a convincing case that involvement, balance, and open-air simplicity matter more than excess.

“ND3” is enthusiast shorthand, not an official model name

Mazda’s official U.S. materials call this car the 2024 MX-5 Miata. “ND3” is enthusiast shorthand for the third major update to the fourth-generation MX-5, known internally as the ND. The fourth generation began with the 2016 model year, while the RF retractable-fastback variant arrived for 2017. Mazda’s heritage material identifies the ND as the fourth generation rather than a separate ND3 generation.

That distinction matters because the 2024 car is an evolution of the ND, not an all-new platform. Its significance comes from how carefully Mazda refined an established formula. You can read Mazda’s official model information in its 2024 MX-5 announcement and its generational history in the company’s MX-5 heritage overview.

The formula Mazda refused to dilute

The 2024 U.S.-spec MX-5 still has the ingredients that made the original Miata special:

  • Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout
  • Naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine
  • 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm
  • 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm
  • Two seats and an open-air body
  • Six-speed manual transmission in Sport and Club models
  • Six-speed manual or automatic transmission in Grand Touring models

The automatic is a conventional six-speed unit with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The manual remains central to the car’s character, but Mazda did not make the MX-5 manual-only: Grand Touring buyers can choose the automatic for commuting and daily use.

There is no turbocharger, all-wheel drive, rear seat, or large-displacement escalation. Mazda also did not turn the car into a technology showcase. The appeal continues to come from modest power, compact dimensions, rear-drive balance, direct controls, and the ability to use a large portion of the car’s performance on ordinary roads.

That is more important than a single acceleration number. The MX-5 does not need enormous output to feel lively because the driver sits close to the mechanical action and the car does not overwhelm the road with power. Mazda’s published material does not provide one universal curb-weight figure for every 2024 body-style and transmission combination, so it is better not to attach an imprecise weight claim to the entire range.

What changed for 2024

1. The steering became calmer on center and more precise in corners

The most important ND3 change is a revised steering system. Mazda fitted a new steering rack with reduced internal friction and updated the electric-assist software. The goal was not to imitate hydraulic steering or create a radically sharper track car. It was to improve the way the front tires communicate around the straight-ahead position and as they load up in a corner.

In practical terms, the 2024 car should feel less nervous during relaxed freeway driving and require fewer small corrections. As the front tires take a set in a bend, the steering builds more coherently instead of responding to every minor input with an unwanted twitch. MotorTrend’s first-test reporting found a better on-center feel and fewer unwanted responses to small steering inputs.

This is a refinement, not a transformation. It does not give the MX-5 dramatically more grip or guarantee a major lap-time gain. MotorTrend also found that the objective difference from the previous car was small enough for tire condition, track temperature, and driver technique to overwhelm the numerical effect. The improvement is easier to understand as an increase in confidence and coherence than as a stopwatch victory.

2. The asymmetric limited-slip differential improves balance

Club and Grand Touring models receive Mazda’s new asymmetric limited-slip differential. Its conical-clutch design uses different ramp angles during acceleration and deceleration. The intended result is stronger lockup under engine braking for greater stability on corner entry, combined with less lockup under acceleration to reduce unwanted understeer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The technical explanation is useful, but the driving consequence is simpler: the front and rear of the car feel more coordinated when the driver transitions from braking to turning to power. The differential does not turn the Miata into a high-powered track weapon. It helps the car feel settled and predictable, especially when the driver is carrying speed into a bend or accelerating out of one.

That distinction separates the ND3 from the usual “facelift makes car faster” story. The revised differential makes the car feel more unified. The stopwatch may barely move, while the driver’s confidence improves noticeably.

3. DSC-Track gives Club buyers a more useful closed-course setting

The Club trim adds DSC-Track, a stability-control mode positioned between full electronic intervention and completely disabling stability control. Mazda describes it as a system that allows more freedom while retaining some brake intervention if the car exceeds the driver’s available control.

DSC-Track is intended for closed-circuit driving only. Mazda expressly warns against using it for experimentation on public roads. It is best understood as an enthusiast and learning aid for a properly prepared track day—not as permission to drive aggressively on streets or as a substitute for training, appropriate tires, safety equipment, and judgment.

Its presence makes sense in the Club because that model also brings the hardware most likely to interest regular track users: Bilstein dampers, a front shock-tower brace, the asymmetric limited-slip differential, and 17-inch wheels. The optional Brembo/BBS/Recaro package adds more track-oriented equipment, but none of it is required to enjoy the standard MX-5.

4. The cabin became easier to live with without abandoning its simplicity

Every 2024 MX-5 receives a larger 8.8-inch infotainment display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto gain touch functionality through the new screen, and Mazda added Alexa integration for hands-free commands. The car also gets revised gauge graphics intended to improve readability, plus more padding around the center console.

The exterior changes are deliberately restrained: revised headlights with a new LED daytime-running-light element, new LED taillights, new wheel designs, and Aero Gray as a new U.S. exterior color.

These updates address genuine daily-use complaints. The infotainment system is less visually dated, the driver has a more readable display, and the console is less punishing as a place to rest an arm. But the cabin is still compact, storage is still limited, and the car remains a mechanical sports car with digital tools—not a luxury vehicle with a sports-car badge.

2024 MX-5 trim levels: which version makes the most sense?

Mazda’s U.S. trim structure makes the ND3 easier to understand than many modern performance cars. The trims are not merely appearance packages; they reflect different priorities.

Sport: the purest low-cost entry point

The Sport is the simplest way into the ND3 formula. In the U.S., it is a soft-top, manual-transmission model. Standard equipment includes 16-inch aluminum wheels, cloth seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Smart Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning, six-speaker audio, and dual USB inputs.

It does not have the Club’s performance hardware, but that is not necessarily a weakness. The Sport keeps the core experience intact and avoids charging the buyer for equipment that may not matter on a scenic weekend drive. It is the right choice for someone who wants the light, open-air, manual-roadster experience at the lowest entry price.

Club: the enthusiast sweet spot

The Club is the performance-focused trim and the strongest recommendation for drivers who care most about chassis response. It adds:

  • Bilstein dampers
  • Front shock-tower brace
  • Asymmetric limited-slip differential
  • DSC-Track
  • 17-inch wheels
  • Bose nine-speaker audio
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay
  • Sportier exterior and seat treatments

The Club is where the ND3’s changes make the most coherent sense. The revised steering, differential, dampers, brace, and stability-control calibration work toward the same goal: making the car feel more composed when driven hard without making it sterile when driven slowly.

The available Brembo/BBS/Recaro package adds Brembo brakes, forged BBS wheels, heated Recaro seats, and an aerodynamic kit. On the RF Club, that package is standard equipment. It is attractive for buyers who genuinely value the hardware, but it also raises the price substantially and is not a prerequisite for the Miata’s core pleasures.

Grand Touring: the more livable daily driver

Grand Touring is aimed at buyers who want more comfort, convenience, and driver-assistance equipment. Depending on body style and configuration, it adds leather seating, heated seats, navigation, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink, Adaptive Front-lighting, High Beam Control, and Traffic Sign Recognition.

It also provides the broadest transmission choice: a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. That makes it the logical version for someone who expects the MX-5 to serve as a daily driver and values convenience more than the Club’s sharper focus.

Grand Touring retains the principal mechanical substance that makes the ND3 appealing, including the revised steering and asymmetric differential equipment identified by Mazda for the trim range, but the Club remains the clearer value for a buyer whose priorities are track driving and chassis hardware. Grand Touring is the better answer when comfort, safety features, or an automatic matter more.

Soft top or RF?

The soft top is the purer expression of the original roadster idea. It is lighter in concept, visually simpler, and more directly connected to the two-seat open sports cars that inspired the Miata. It is also generally the less expensive route into the range.

The RF, short for retractable fastback, provides a coupe-like roofline and a distinctive design. Mazda says its power-operated roof opens or closes in approximately 13 seconds. However, it is not a conventional fully retractable hardtop: the rear buttresses remain in place. The RF therefore delivers a different visual and ownership experience rather than becoming an entirely different sports car.

Neither body style is universally superior. Choose the soft top if open-air purity, simplicity, and the traditional roadster identity matter most. Choose the RF if you prefer its fastback appearance, want its fixed buttress design, or place a higher value on the character of its roof mechanism and cabin structure. Climate, parking security, and personal taste should decide the question—not the assumption that one version is objectively the “real” Miata.

Historical context: why the icon argument is bigger than one refresh

The MX-5’s history gives the ND3 more context than a typical mid-cycle update. Mazda says the original MX-5 debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989 and went on sale in the United States that May as a 1990 model.

The car was conceived as a modern revival of the lightweight two-seat open sports car. Mazda’s historical account emphasizes rear-wheel drive, a pure two-seat layout, naturally aspirated power, low weight, and the company’s Jinba Ittai philosophy—often translated as “rider and horse as one.”

  • Black performance wheels with fine rim design for an aggressive stand
  • Realistic licensed model - Mazda MX-5 Miata as a worldwide celebrated sports car classic

The formula proved unusually durable. Mazda’s global history records that Guinness World Records recognized the MX-5 in 2000 as the world’s highest-production two-seat open-top sports car after 531,890 cars had been produced from April 1989 through October 1999. Mazda’s current heritage material says more than one million people worldwide have discovered the MX-5’s open-air driving style.

Those figures establish popularity, but popularity alone does not make a car an icon. The stronger case is continuity. The MX-5 survived changing safety requirements, increasingly digital interiors, emissions pressure, crossovers, horsepower inflation, and the market’s preference for larger vehicles without abandoning the principles that defined it.

The 2024 car demonstrates that continuity particularly well. Mazda added the technologies and chassis revisions needed to keep the car usable and composed, but it did not respond to every market trend by adding weight, power, driven wheels, seats, or complexity. The ND3 is a current sports car that still understands why the original worked.

What the ND3 still does not solve

The 2024 refresh does not remove the basic compromises of a small roadster:

  • There are only two seats.
  • The trunk is small; Car and Driver lists approximately four cubic feet of trunk volume for the 2024 model.
  • Cabin storage is limited.
  • The seating position is low and the cockpit is tight for some drivers.
  • Weather protection and year-round practicality are not equivalent to those of a coupe or hatchback.
  • The naturally aspirated engine is lively, but the car is not a straight-line muscle car.

The new infotainment display does not create more room. The RF does not turn the car into a conventional coupe. The Club’s differential and suspension do not create a huge performance gap over the previous ND. And 181 horsepower will not satisfy a buyer whose primary goal is maximum acceleration.

Independent testing found the 2024 car’s raw performance close to the preceding ND, with the meaningful gains concentrated in steering feel, cornering confidence, and usability. That is not a failure; it is an accurate description of what Mazda chose to improve.

Practical ownership considerations

Because the MX-5 has so little storage, buyers should think about how they will use it before choosing equipment. A soft-top and RF also require different fitment for many exterior accessories. If the car will be parked outdoors, a Mazda MX-5 Miata car cover can be a sensible protection category to research, but buyers should confirm the exact ND soft-top or RF fitment and should not assume an aftermarket listing is Mazda-approved. Mazda has historically offered MX-5 indoor and outdoor covers as genuine accessories, while its accessory ecosystem also includes items such as wheel locks and splash guards.

2024 U.S. pricing context

Mazda’s January 2024 announcement listed the following starting MSRPs. These are historical launch-price figures, not current 2026 dealer pricing, used-market values, or a prediction of what a particular car should cost today.

Version Launch MSRP
Sport soft top, manual $28,985
Club soft top, manual $32,485
Grand Touring soft top, manual $34,285
Grand Touring soft top, automatic $35,205
RF Club $40,210
RF Grand Touring, manual $37,010
RF Grand Touring, automatic $37,980

Mazda separately listed a $4,800 Brembo/BBS/Recaro package for the soft-top Club and a $300 Tan Nappa leather option for Grand Touring models. Destination and handling, taxes, title, and other fees were excluded. The announcement later recorded destination and handling at $1,185, or $1,230 in Alaska.

Pricing also reinforces the trim decision. The Sport is the value entry point, the Club asks buyers to pay for meaningful chassis equipment, and the Grand Touring uses its additional cost to provide comfort and convenience. The RF premium is primarily about body style and ownership preference rather than a completely different driving concept.

Which 2024 MX-5 should you buy?

Choose the Sport if you want the essential Miata experience, plan to drive mostly on public roads, and do not need the Club’s suspension and differential hardware.

Choose the RF if its fastback design and retractable roof are central to the appeal. Do not choose it simply because you expect it to be a fundamentally faster or more capable car.

The verdict: evolution is exactly why the ND3 matters

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 ND3 is not the most powerful, fastest, roomiest, or most technologically advanced sports car available. It does not need to be. Its achievement is maintaining a clear identity while correcting the details that could otherwise make that identity feel old-fashioned.

The steering is calmer and more communicative. The asymmetric differential makes the car feel more settled. DSC-Track gives Club buyers a more sophisticated closed-course setting. The infotainment system is easier to use. Trim levels now communicate their purposes more clearly. None of those changes overwhelms the original concept, and that is why they work.

The Miata is an automotive icon not because it became something larger than itself, but because Mazda has repeatedly resisted making it something else. The ND3 remains a compact, naturally aspirated, rear-drive, two-seat roadster that rewards attention rather than excess. After more than 30 years, that discipline is not merely nostalgic—it is the reason the car still feels relevant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ND3 an official Mazda model name?

No. ND3 is enthusiast shorthand for the 2024 refresh of the fourth-generation ND MX-5. Mazda’s official U.S. materials identify it as the 2024 MX-5 Miata.

Which 2024 MX-5 trim is best for enthusiasts?

The Club is the strongest enthusiast recommendation because it combines the revised steering with Bilstein dampers, a front shock-tower brace, the asymmetric limited-slip differential, DSC-Track, and 17-inch wheels. The Sport remains the better value for buyers who want the basic roadster experience without performance-focused equipment.

Is the 2024 MX-5 faster than the previous ND?

Its raw performance is close to the preceding ND. The meaningful improvements are steering composure, cornering confidence, and usability rather than a major increase in acceleration or lap-time potential.

Can DSC-Track be used on public roads?

No. Mazda describes DSC-Track as a closed-circuit feature and warns that it is not for public-road use. It should only be used at an appropriate circuit with suitable safety equipment and conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy the soft top or RF?

Choose the soft top for the most traditional and direct roadster experience, generally at a lower price. Choose the RF for its retractable-fastback design and coupe-like visual character. Climate, parking, and personal taste are more important than assuming one is universally better.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2024 MX-5 ND3 is an icon because it improves the Miata without abandoning its reason for existing. It is a disciplined evolution: more composed, more usable, and better differentiated, but still a small naturally aspirated rear-drive roadster built around involvement rather than excess.
