The scarcest configuration in the production figures enthusiasts have compiled is the 1995 five-speed manual, with 574 recorded. The overall lowest-volume model year in the same table is 1994, at 2,647 cars. Those are two different claims, and the difference matters if you want to describe this car accurately.
What the Super Coupe was
The SC was the supercharged version of the Thunderbird, built on the MN12 platform. It used a 3.8-liter overhead-valve V6 fitted with an Eaton supercharger. The Super Coupe Club of America reproduced specifications for the 1989–1993 engine, which list 210 bhp at 4,000 rpm and 315 lb-ft of torque at 2,600 rpm, with 12 psi of boost. Those figures come from the club’s 2005 forum post. The club’s compilation does not give separate late-run specifications for 1994 and 1995, so the power numbers should be read as the 1989–1993 rating rather than a confirmed figure for every year.
The club’s production table covers 1989 through 1995, a seven-model-year run. Ford’s own corporate history confirms only that Thunderbird production ended in the mid-1990s. It does not give Super Coupe model years or production totals.
How the production figures compare
The Super Coupe Club of America’s 2005 forum post reproduces annual production figures split by transmission. The club describes them as believed to be correct, and it notes that other published literature gives different numbers. A 2007 forum discussion gives total annual figures for 1992 through 1995 without the transmission split.

| Model year | Automatic | Manual | Total | Source and basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1992 | Not stated | Not stated | 4,212 | 2007 forum discussion; total only |
| 1993 | Not stated | Not stated | 3,891 | 2007 forum discussion; total only |
| 1994 | 1,925 | 722 | 2,647 | 2005 club table; total is the sum of the two counts |
| 1995 | 5,167 | 574 | 5,741 | 2005 club table; total is the sum of the two counts |
On these totals, 1994 is the lowest-volume model year. The 1995 model year is the largest of the four listed, but its manual count is the smallest of the two years with a published split. That is the basis for the five-speed claim: 574 manuals in 1995 against 722 in 1994.
Why the 1995 five-speed is the unicorn
The rarity is about configuration rather than the model year as a whole. A 1995 Super Coupe was a high-volume car by SC standards, with 5,741 recorded in the club table. Only about one in ten of those was a manual, and the 574 manuals represent the smallest manual count in the table. For an enthusiast looking for a supercharged Thunderbird with a stick shift, that split is what makes the car hard to find.

The same table gives no information about how many of those 574 cars survive today, what options they carried, or whether any were converted from automatic. Those are questions for an individual car’s history and paperwork, not for a production count.
What the rarity claim does not mean
- It is not a Ford-verified ledger. The counts come from enthusiast-club compilation, and other literature differs.
- It does not make 1995 the rarest year overall. In the same table, 1994 has the lowest total.
- It does not make the car the rarest factory-supercharged car of the 1990s. The figures compare Thunderbird Super Coupe years only. They say nothing about supercharged cars from other manufacturers.
- It does not rank the 1995 model year by rarity. A 1995 automatic SC is one of the most common configurations in the table, with 5,167 recorded.
How to use the figures responsibly
If you are describing a car, name the configuration: “1995 Thunderbird Super Coupe, five-speed manual.” If you are citing numbers, attribute them to the Super Coupe Club of America’s compiled production table and state that they are club figures, not Ford records. Calculated totals, such as 2,647 for 1994 and 5,741 for 1995, are sums of the listed automatic and manual counts.

Confirming an individual car is a separate task. A production table can show how many manuals were recorded for a year, but it cannot confirm that a particular car is one of them. Check the transmission and engine directly on the vehicle and compare them with its paperwork.
The Thunderbird’s broader history is well documented, but the Super Coupe-specific figures in this article rest on enthusiast-club compilations. Treat them as the best available published breakdown rather than the final word.
