These figures are not an uncontested factory-verified top ten: most come from an undated specialist compilation, and the order depends on whether closely related variants count separately. The list below states its counting rule and labels the source of every figure.
How this rarest-AMG list is counted
This ranking covers limited-production Mercedes-AMG road cars and special editions, ordered by the totals reported in the AMG In Years specialist compilation. Body styles and engine variants are separate entries when that source lists them separately. The Hamilton and Rosberg SL 63 World Championship editions are grouped as one family, with the reported count shown for each version. The resulting ten entries are a useful comparison, not a definitive manufacturer ranking: AMG In Years is a secondary source, and its page gives no publication date.
Except where noted, the counts below are specialist-reported figures, not totals confirmed by Mercedes-Benz. They are presented as reported production totals, not market-specific supply or numbers of cars imported into a particular country.
The 10 rarest reported AMG road-car entries

CLK GTR AMG 7.3-liter coupe — 2 reported
AMG In Years lists two examples of the 7.3-liter CLK GTR coupe. This is the smallest total in the compilation used here. The figure is specialist-reported, not independently confirmed by a cited Mercedes-Benz production record.

The AMG In Years table gives the W168 A 38 AMG a total of four. That makes it one of the compilation’s lowest-count entries; the figure should be treated as a secondary-source claim rather than a factory-verified total.

AMG In Years lists six CLK GTR roadsters. The roadster is counted separately from the coupe because the source gives it a distinct production figure.

The R129 SL 55 AMG Mille Miglia edition is listed at 10 by AMG In Years. This is a specialist compilation figure, not a manufacturer-confirmed count.

The AMG In Years table separates this 6.9-liter CLK GTR coupe from the 7.3-liter version and reports 18 examples. Both CLK GTR coupe figures here are secondary-source totals.

SL 63 AMG World Championship editions — 19 each
AMG In Years lists 19 Hamilton editions and 19 Rosberg editions. They are grouped here to keep the list to ten entries, but the figure is 19 for each version—not 19 combined.

What the counts do—and do not—prove
Production totals for special AMGs are not consistently published on the same basis. The list uses a single specialist compilation to identify very low reported runs, while Mercedes-Benz materials independently verify some useful comparisons. A low number in a secondary table is not equivalent to a factory-confirmed global production record.
- Variant grouping changes the ranking. The two SL 63 World Championship versions are separate names in the source, each reported at 19. Grouping them as one family is an editorial choice; splitting them would produce a different set of ten entries.
- Road cars and race cars are different categories. The list is for road-going models and editions. Competition-only cars should not be inserted into it just because their production limit is low.
- Global production is not the same as regional availability. A number of cars offered or imported in one market cannot be compared directly with a worldwide production total.
- Conversions need a distinct counting basis. A modified or converted car should not be treated as a factory edition unless the source establishes that the figure concerns factory-built examples.
Two useful comparisons outside the ten
190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II: rare, but not among these smallest totals
Mercedes-Benz says 502 examples of the 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II were produced as a homologation model for the corresponding DTM touring car. That manufacturer-confirmed figure is far higher than the smallest totals above, but the Evolution II remains a scarce and historically important AMG-era car. Source: Mercedes-Benz Media, 2020.
Black Series: limited-production road cars, not a synonym for the rarest
Black Series is Mercedes-AMG’s limited-production, track-focused road-car family. It provides useful context for AMG rarity, but the name alone does not mean a model has one of the very smallest production runs. Mercedes-Benz USA’s retrospective discusses the family from a U.S.-market perspective, so any market-specific figures there should not be mistaken for worldwide production totals. Why the list can change
The candidate pool is historical, not permanently closed. In March 2026, Mercedes-Benz Media announced a future GT3 and Black Series, illustrating that new competition cars and road-car editions can add fresh points of comparison.
