There is no proven universal winner for “most reliable diesel engine,” and the available evidence does not support a statistical top-ten ranking. Reliability depends on the exact engine generation, maintenance, vehicle condition, emissions configuration, intended work and access to parts and service in your market. This is a rank-free shortlist: six engines with useful source-backed detail, plus four additional candidates for which the available evidence supports nomination but not a detailed reliability verdict.
How to read this shortlist
MotorTrend noted in 2022 that a universally accepted answer is extremely difficult because many diesel years, makes and models can be trusted. Its article does not establish comparative failure rates, and neither do the other sources cited here. Treat “reliable” below as a reputation supported by reported design or maintenance characteristics—not as a measured probability that one engine will outlast another.
The detailed evidence leans toward North American pickups. Toyota’s 1HZ adds an international off-road and utility perspective. Four other globally familiar candidates appear at the end, but the available material does not establish enough about their service records, failure patterns or applications to rank them confidently alongside the better-documented engines.
Six engines with useful reliability detail
1. 1994–1998 5.9L 12-valve Cummins 6BT
Found in Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, this version is known for a mechanically controlled design. MotorTrend highlights the Bosch P7100 inline injection pump on 1994–1998 models and describes the engine as durable. That reputation does not eliminate a specific inspection point: Autoblog warns that a small steel pin in the timing-gear cover can loosen and fall into the gears, potentially causing catastrophic damage. A retention kit is available from the aftermarket, but it is not a substitute for checking the engine and confirming that any repair fits its exact year and configuration.

2. 1999–2003 7.3L Power Stroke
Ford used this engine in F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks. MotorTrend describes an iron block and heads, air-to-air intercooling and a relatively simple design. Output varied by year and configuration: MotorTrend gives a range of 235–275 hp and 500–525 lb-ft. Autoblog identifies camshaft position sensor failure as a known issue. On a used truck, distinguish the engine’s reputation from the condition of its transmission: the available configurations included a 4R100 automatic or ZF S6-650 manual, and transmission durability is a separate question. At high mileage, maintenance history and the specific truck’s condition matter more than the name on the valve cover.
3. 2001–2004 6.6L Duramax LB7
The LB7 appeared in Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 trucks. MotorTrend describes it as a pre-DPF generation and discusses its CP3 high-pressure pump and fuel-control actuator. Its article gives 300 hp and 520 lb-ft for the LB7 discussion. The absence of later diesel particulate filter hardware identifies a configuration; it does not, by itself, prove greater reliability. Check the precise model year, emissions equipment and fuel-system condition rather than treating “pre-DPF” as a guarantee.

4. 2006–2007 6.6L Duramax LBZ
MotorTrend points to revised block and bottom-end construction and reports 360 hp and 650 lb-ft for the LBZ. Autoblog describes it as a sought-after transition-era engine, while also flagging transfer-case wear-through and water-pump impeller concerns in the truck package. Those are important used-vehicle checks, but they should not be mistaken for evidence of an internal engine failure pattern: a truck’s drivetrain and cooling-system issues are not the same thing as engine-internal reliability.
5. 2003–2007 5.9L common-rail Cummins
This Dodge Ram 2500/3500 generation uses common-rail fuel injection. MotorTrend credits the CP3 system with improved dependability over the earlier VP44 era and notes an emissions-hardware change around mid-2007. Autoblog cautions that factory filtration can be inadequate to protect high-pressure injectors from contaminated fuel. The practical takeaway is to verify the exact model year and service history, including fuel-system maintenance; “5.9 Cummins” covers different injection systems and should not be treated as one uniform configuration.

6. Toyota 1HZ 4.2L naturally aspirated inline-six
Used in international Hilux and Land Cruiser applications, the 1HZ represents a different kind of reliability trade-off. Autoblog describes a mechanically simple engine without turbocharging or complex electronics, while noting modest output. That can suit low-speed utility and endurance better than duties needing strong towing acceleration or high-speed performance. The same source cautions that performance modifications can compromise the engine’s reliability reputation. Its global reputation is editorial, not a quantified comparison.
Four further candidates, with less detail established
A separate ten-engine roundup surfaced the following names, but the available material does not establish comparable failure rates, detailed year-by-year applications or a source-backed case for ranking them against the six above. They are candidates to investigate for a particular market—not proven winners in this list.

- Toyota 1HD-FTE: Named as a candidate; the available detail is insufficient to assess it alongside the 1HZ or the North American pickup engines.
- 2017–2023 Duramax L5P: Named as a candidate; the available material does not establish a comparative reliability verdict for these years.
How to choose a reliable diesel for your use
Compare the exact generation and fuel system
Engine-family names span meaningful changes. A mechanically controlled injection system, HEUI system and common rail are not interchangeable descriptions, and the 5.9L Cummins examples above demonstrate why the injection generation matters. Confirm the engine code, model year and installed configuration before applying a reputation or buying parts.
Check emissions configuration and jurisdiction
Emissions hardware varies by generation, model year and market. Confirm what is fitted to the specific vehicle and what local regulations require. A simpler or earlier configuration is not automatically more reliable, and removing or altering emissions equipment can create legal and mechanical problems.

Inspect known weak points without confusing truck and engine issues
Use an engine-specific inspection: the 12-valve Cummins timing-cover pin and the 7.3L Power Stroke camshaft position sensor are examples of checks raised by the cited coverage. For an LBZ truck, inspect the transfer case and water pump as well, while keeping those vehicle concerns separate from engine internals. A reputation for durable internals does not make a specific used vehicle trouble-free.
Match capability to the job
The 1HZ illustrates that durability and performance are different criteria. A naturally aspirated engine with modest output may suit low-speed utility but not a buyer who needs strong towing performance. Choose according to actual payload, towing, route and speed requirements rather than modifying an engine past the design trade-offs that underpin its reputation.
Give the individual vehicle more weight than the broad reputation
Ask for maintenance records, assess current condition and have the exact truck inspected by a mechanic familiar with that engine and market. Parts availability and local service knowledge matter: a durable design is less useful if the vehicle cannot be diagnosed or repaired competently where it will work.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
The output figures below are specifications reported by MotorTrend in 2022, not reliability measurements. They illustrate differences in capability, not a ranking of durability.

Cummins reported in 2023 that it had produced more than 13 million B6.7 diesel engines over 40 years. That is a manufacturer-reported production figure, not evidence that the B6.7 has a lower failure rate than the engines above. Cummins also calls the B6.7 “the most reliable diesel truck engine”; that is the company’s own promotional claim, not an independent comparative finding.
