If you can charge regularly, plug-in hybrids post much higher MPGe figures: the Lexus TX 550h+ is reported at 76 MPGe, followed by the Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid at 74 MPGe. Those headline MPGe results include electricity, so a PHEV’s gasoline-only economy is the more useful figure when you cannot plug in.
The rankings below use EPA combined MPG for conventional hybrids, EPA combined MPGe for plug-in hybrids and EVs, and the cited 2026 model information. EPA describes its estimates as a standardized basis for comparing vehicles; they are laboratory estimates, not independent road-test results.

How to read MPG versus MPGe
Conventional hybrids
MPG is the appropriate comparison for the Grand Highlander, Santa Fe, Palisade, Sorento Hybrid and XC90 B5. These vehicles refuel with gasoline and recharge their batteries while driving and braking; there is no plug-in energy assumption behind the combined MPG number.
Plug-in hybrids
MPGe combines electricity and gasoline into one laboratory-equivalent measure. It can look dramatically better than gasoline-only MPG when the battery is charged. The Sorento Plug-in Hybrid and XC90 T8 therefore show both figures in the table: MPGe describes charged operation, while gasoline-only MPG describes operation after the usable electric energy is exhausted.
Battery-electric vehicles
An EV has no gasoline MPG. Compare its EPA MPGe, rated driving range, charging availability and the electrical cost of your home or public charging—not a gasoline number.

Model-by-model buying notes
Lexus TX 550h+
iSeeCars reports the TX 550h+ as the most efficient luxury three-row plug-in hybrid in this shortlist. Because the cited listing is not the EPA database entry for a verified 2026 trim, confirm the window-sticker rating and equipment before relying on the ranking.
Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid
This is the only entry here explicitly identified with standard AWD while retaining a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Its gasoline-only rating makes it a more predictable choice for buyers who cannot charge every day.
Volvo XC90 T8 AWD
Volvo positions the T8 as a three-row plug-in hybrid with an EPA-estimated electric range of up to 32 miles. That makes home or workplace charging central to realizing its efficiency advantage.

Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid
The front-drive version is the mainstream non-plug-in leader in this list. Selecting AWD lowers its EPA combined rating, so compare stickers rather than assuming every Grand Highlander Hybrid has the same economy.
Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid
The 2026 Santa Fe uses a three-row body style, but the available seating arrangement depends on trim. Check the exact passenger configuration alongside the FWD or AWD fuel-economy entry.

Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Blue
“Blue” is the particularly efficient FWD entry in the EPA listings. The ordinary FWD Palisade Hybrid is rated lower, so the trim name matters when comparing dealer listings.
Kia Sorento Hybrid
The conventional Sorento Hybrid offers a lower-efficiency AWD alternative to its FWD configuration. It is the simpler choice for buyers who want hybrid operation without installing or using charging equipment.

Volvo XC90 B5 AWD
The B5 is the non-plug-in mild-hybrid XC90. It provides three-row AWD utility without charging, but its EPA rating is well below the plug-in T8’s charged-operation result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Charging determines whether a PHEV saves fuel
EPA warns that plug-in hybrids “can be fueled solely with gasoline, like a conventional hybrid, but they will not achieve maximum range or fuel economy without charging.” In practice:
- Charge at home or work most days: short trips can use the battery portion of the powertrain, making the MPGe figure relevant.
- Charge occasionally: your results will move toward the gasoline-only rating shown for the PHEV.
- Never charge: compare the vehicle primarily by its gasoline-only behavior and purchase it for other reasons, not its headline MPGe.
Charging access, electricity pricing and driving distance are not stated in the cited vehicle sources, so calculate those variables for your own route before choosing a PHEV over a conventional hybrid.
Efficiency is separate from third-row usability
A high MPGe number does not establish that a vehicle has the most comfortable third row or the largest cargo area. The cited material confirms Mazda’s seating flexibility and identifies the EV9, TX, Sorento, XC90, Grand Highlander, Santa Fe and Palisade as three-row vehicles, but it does not provide a consistent set of third-row legroom or cargo-volume measurements for all ten.
Quick Recap
- Bring the child seats, booster seats or adult passengers who will actually use row three.
- Test cargo space with the third row raised; published cargo measurements are not supplied consistently for this comparison.
- Verify whether the exact trim is six-, seven- or eight-passenger before signing a purchase order.
Drivetrain, trim and ownership checks
- FWD versus AWD: EPA ratings are configuration-specific. The Grand Highlander, Santa Fe and Sorento hybrids all lose combined efficiency when moving to AWD, while the Sorento PHEV and XC90 T8 entries are AWD.
- Wheels and tires: EPA certification can vary by wheel-and-tire package; use the rating for the exact vehicle identification number or window sticker.
- Price and fuel grade: transaction prices and required gasoline octane are not stated in the cited sources. Confirm both for the exact trim rather than applying a model-wide assumption.
- EV charging: the EV9 requires a charging plan. Compare the EPA range and MPGe for the exact battery, drivetrain and wheel configuration with the chargers available at home, work and on regular trips.
Which one should you choose?
- Best gasoline-only efficiency: Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid FWD or Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid FWD, both rated up to 36 mpg combined.
- Best charged-operation efficiency: Lexus TX 550h+ by the reported MPGe figure, subject to confirming the exact 2026 EPA trim.
- Best PHEV when AWD is non-negotiable: Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid or Volvo XC90 T8 AWD; choose between them by seating, size, charging access and budget after checking exact equipment.
- Best no-gasoline option: Kia EV9 Long Range RWD, provided its range and charging network fit your routine.
