The fastest American-made road car in this comparison is the SSC Tuatara: SSC reports a 282.9 mph two-way average from a 2021 test. The car also reached 295.0 mph in a separate one-way test in 2022. Those figures describe different runs, so the higher number should not be mistaken for the two-way average.
Below is a useful snapshot of ten fast American-built road cars, not a definitive record table. Final assembly in the United States is the practical meaning of “American-made” here; specialist builds and tuned versions are included where noted. The list follows a September 2026 duPont REGISTRY editorial ranking, but the available primary sources do not independently verify every entry or its exact position. Results based on a two-way average are stronger evidence of a repeatable top speed than a single-direction pass, and the reported figures are not all measured on the same basis.
How the ranking works
“Fastest” depends on what is being compared. A two-way average accounts for runs in opposite directions; a one-way maximum is a single pass and may be affected by conditions such as wind. A standing half-mile speed, a manufacturer-claimed maximum, and a completed top-speed run are different kinds of evidence.
The entries below retain those distinctions rather than treating every number as an equivalent record. They cover American-built road cars, including specialist and tuner-built vehicles. The order is an editorial ranking from duPont REGISTRY, not an independently verified ranking across a single standardized test. Where the available reporting does not state a venue, measurement method, or verifier, that limitation is made explicit.

SSC Tuatara — 282.9 mph two-way average (2021)
SSC North America says its Tuatara averaged 282.9 mph during a two-way test at Kennedy Space Center on January 17, 2021, measured with Racelogic equipment. SSC lists the result on its records page. In a separate test on May 14, 2022, the car reached 295.0 mph in a single top-speed run, according to SSC’s release. The 295.0 mph figure is a one-way maximum, not the 2021 two-way average.
SSC founder and CEO Jerod Shelby described the 2022 acceleration as evidence the car had not reached its ceiling. That is the manufacturer’s interpretation of the test, not a further achieved speed record.

Hennessey Venom F5 — 219.07 mph standing half-mile speed (2024)
DuPont REGISTRY reports a 219.07 mph standing half-mile result for the Venom F5 in 2024. A half-mile speed is not a conventional top-speed pass. The same article gives 328 mph as a theoretical ceiling and says a planned two-way run above 300 mph had not occurred as of its September 28, 2026 publication. The projected ceiling is not an achieved record.
-
Hennessey Venom GT — 270.49 mph one-way (2014)
Hennessey lists 270.49 mph for the Venom GT at Kennedy Space Center in 2014 on its vehicle page. This was a one-way run. DuPont REGISTRY notes that the model’s limited production volume kept it outside the Guinness production-car record category; its speed is still a notable reported result, but it is not a two-way average.

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 — 233 mph (C8) and 212 mph (C7)
The ranking reports a witnessed 233 mph run at Papenburg for the C8 Corvette ZR1, and 212 mph for the earlier C7 ZR1. These are separate generations and should not be combined into one model-year figure. The available ranking does not specify the C8 run’s directionality or a measuring organization, so the 233 mph result should be read as reported there rather than as a standardized two-way record.

DuPont REGISTRY reports that the Hennessey-tuned Camaro ZL1 Exorcist reached 217 mph at Continental Tire Proving Grounds, verified with VBOX telemetry. This is a specialist tuner build rather than an unmodified factory Camaro. The ranking does not specify whether the result was a one-way pass or a two-way average.
-
Ford GT (2017–2022) — 216 mph
The second-generation Ford GT is listed at 216 mph by duPont REGISTRY. The article says a little over 1,000 were hand-assembled by Multimatic. The available ranking does not state a test venue, directionality, or independent verifier for the 216 mph figure.

Dodge Viper ACR — up to a claimed 206 mph
DuPont REGISTRY gives the final-generation Viper coupe a manufacturer-claimed top speed of 206 mph, while noting independent testing and owner runs generally nearer 190–202 mph. Those lower figures are not presented as a single standardized test result, so the claimed 206 mph should not be read as an independently confirmed record.

Further entries in the duPont REGISTRY ranking
The September 28, 2026 duPont REGISTRY list includes additional American-made cars beyond the models above. The available reporting does not establish enough comparable speed, test, or verification detail for those remaining entries to present their precise positions as verified records. See the full editorial ranking for its complete selection and context.

Why the tenth position is not a verified record
The published ranking names ten cars, but its complete order cannot be confirmed from the primary-source material available here. Rather than invent a speed or assign an unsupported record status to a tenth entry, this list preserves the distinction between the editorial selection and confirmed primary-source evidence.
Why a top-speed ranking is not a record-book table
There is no single number that answers every version of “fastest American car.” Production eligibility, how many examples were built, whether the car was modified, and whether a speed was achieved in one direction or averaged across two all affect the comparison. A manufacturer’s projected ceiling is not evidence that a car reached that speed.

The FIA’s Category A homologated records list organizes records by vehicle class and distance. It includes, for example, a Ford Thunderbird Coupé record over 10 km and Chevrolet Corvette endurance records. Such class- or distance-specific achievements are not directly comparable to a road-car maximum-speed ranking.
