There is no objective all-time handling score that settles this list. These ten front-wheel-drive cars stand out for the way they steer, balance and respond through corners—not simply for speed, power or lap times. The ranking weighs steering feedback, chassis balance, predictability, agility and road-going compromises, while allowing for the different expectations of cars built in different eras. It is an editorial judgment, not the result of a controlled comparison.
How this ranking judges handling
Handling is broader than grip. A car can corner quickly yet offer little steering information; another can feel agile and easy to place without having the greatest outright pace. This list favors cars whose responses make their character legible to the driver: clear steering, a balanced chassis, predictable reactions as cornering loads change, and useful responsiveness on real roads. Ride quality matters where the evidence supports a meaningful trade-off.
The available accounts are qualitative road impressions and manufacturer histories, not a shared scoring system or cross-era lap-time test. The order below is therefore a reasoned ranking, not a claim that one model has objectively won every comparison.
The 10 best-handling front-wheel-drive cars
-
Honda Integra Type R
The Integra Type R makes a compelling case through its chassis priorities. Honda Australia says handling was integral to the Type R experience and highlights double-wishbone suspension at both ends. Autocar has described it as a benchmark for later Type R models. The compromise is part of the story: Honda’s retrospective acknowledges a stiff ride from the no-compromise setup. This is a car for drivers willing to accept firmness in exchange for a focused, communicative experience, not a universal comfort champion.

Peugeot 205 GTi
The 205 GTi is the archetype of a light, lively hot hatch: its appeal lies in agility and eager responses rather than power alone. Peugeot attributes some of its agility and responsiveness to short overhangs and a 2,420 mm wheelbase. Top Gear’s comparison describes eager steering and a delicate, lively character. The wheelbase is a manufacturer-published dimension, not a handling score, but it helps explain the compact proportions behind the car’s reputation.
-
Renault Clio Williams
The Clio Williams offers a different kind of balance from the 205 GTi. Top Gear and evo describe the cars as distinct in character, with evo emphasizing the Williams’ more measured rear-axle behavior. That is qualitative road-test language, not a quantified result, but it points to a more composed response when cornering loads shift. Renault’s heritage material confirms the Williams was a front-wheel-drive sporty hatchback. A specialist history page reports that it launched in 1993 as a limited run of 3,800 cars; that figure describes the original run, not the number of surviving road cars.

Peugeot 306 GTI-6
The 306 GTI-6 belongs on a list that recognizes Peugeot’s handling-focused tradition beyond the 205. Autocar includes it among notable front-wheel-drive cars, while Peugeot’s retrospective places it within the marque’s GTi lineage. The case here is historical and editorial rather than a claim that available sources establish a measured advantage over the other cars on this list.
-
Peugeot 106 GTi
The smaller 106 GTi carries that lineage into a compact format. Peugeot’s retrospective calls it agile and responsive, qualities that make it a natural inclusion alongside the 205 GTi and 306 GTI-6. Its place here reflects the appeal of nimble, readily adjustable handling rather than any unsupported claim about comparative grip or speed.

Renault Clio 182 Trophy
Autocar includes the Clio 182 Trophy among its standout front-wheel-drive cars. The sources available for this ranking provide less specific handling detail about it than they do for the Integra, 205 GTi or Clio Williams, so its position is necessarily more cautious. Its inclusion recognizes its standing in enthusiast coverage without pretending that the evidence here supplies a detailed technical comparison.
-
Ford Racing Puma
The Racing Puma is a plausible choice for an all-era handling shortlist, but the evidence available here does not provide enough model-specific detail to rank its steering, balance or road manners against the better-documented cars. Its inclusion should be read as an editorial candidate, not as a conclusion backed by a common test.

-
Ford Fiesta ST
The Fiesta ST represents the later hot-hatch generation in this broad historical selection. It is a credible candidate, but the sources used here do not substantiate a detailed handling comparison for a particular version or model year. Because “Fiesta ST” spans multiple generations, a more precise ranking would need to specify which one and assess it on comparable terms.
-
Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S
The Golf GTI Clubsport S is another plausible later-era inclusion. However, the available material does not establish a specific handling case or a comparable result against the classic cars above. Its place reflects the breadth of the all-time field, with the limitation that the evidence here is thinner than for the older Peugeot and Honda examples.

-
Honda Civic Type R
The Civic Type R extends Honda’s front-wheel-drive performance story beyond the Integra. The shortlist identifies it as a candidate, but the available sources do not support a generation-specific assessment of its steering, chassis balance or ride. Since the name covers several distinct cars, any stronger comparison needs to identify the exact generation rather than treating them as one unchanged model.
Why the older hot hatches still matter
The early Peugeot and Renault examples show why “best handling” cannot be reduced to outright speed. The 205 GTi’s compact proportions and eager steering, and the Clio Williams’ more measured rear-axle behavior, describe different ways to make a front-wheel-drive car feel engaging. Peugeot’s own retrospective also places the 106 GTi and 306 GTI-6 within a continuing GTi lineage. These are useful distinctions in character, not evidence of a single universal ideal.
What this list can—and cannot—settle
The strongest source-backed cases here are the Integra Type R, Peugeot 205 GTi, Clio Williams, 106 GTi and 306 GTI-6. Autocar’s selection supports the Clio 182 Trophy as a standout, while the available detail for several later candidates is more limited. The list should be read as an editorial selection across eras, not a definitive consensus or a controlled comparison. A driver who values a supple ride, ultimate track pace or a particular generation may reasonably choose a different order.
