In 1989, Mitsubishi added a Japanese-market Galant AMG: a front-wheel-drive sedan with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 4G63 engine tuned to 170 PS, rather than the turbocharged, four-wheel-drive Galant VR-4. Mitsubishi says the AMG version was modified by German tuning company AMG; its Japanese company history describes the project as a joint development.
What was the Mitsubishi Galant AMG?
The Galant AMG was a performance-oriented version of the sixth-generation Galant. Mitsubishi’s official history says the lineup gained the model in 1989, with modifications by German tuning company AMG: Mitsubishi Motors’ company history. Mitsubishi’s Japanese company history describes it as jointly developed with West German AMG: Mitsubishi Motors’ Japanese company history.
It was a real production model, not a later badge or a name for the VR-4. Toyota GAZOO’s historical catalog identifies it as the E-E33A and records a 1,997 cc engine, four doors, five seats, and front-wheel drive. The catalog lists five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions: Toyota GAZOO Galant catalog.
How much power did the Galant AMG make?
Toyota GAZOO lists the AMG-tuned 4G63 at 170 PS at 6,750 rpm and 19.5 kgm at 5,000 rpm. The same catalog gives 140 PS for the base 4G63, making the AMG tune’s listed output 30 PS higher. These are catalog figures, not a modern independent test: Toyota GAZOO Galant catalog.

Mitsubishi’s Japanese history also singles out a titanium-alloy valve spring retainer, which the company describes as a first for a production car. That first-in-production distinction is Mitsubishi’s claim; the cited history does not provide comparative documentation or further engineering detail.
How was the Galant AMG different from the VR-4?
Both belonged to the same Galant generation and performance era, but their recipes were distinct. The AMG was a naturally aspirated, front-wheel-drive sedan. Mitsubishi’s history describes the VR-4 as having an intercooled turbo engine and four-wheel drive, and links its Group A rally car to victory at the 1989 1000 Lakes Rally.

What did the Galant AMG cost when new?
Toyota GAZOO’s individual model entry dates the cataloged car to October 1989 and lists a new-car price of 2,897,000 yen and a vehicle weight of 1,240 kg. The price is a historical Japanese new-car list price, not a current value: Toyota GAZOO October 1989 model entry.

Why the Galant AMG stands out
The unusual part is the contrast: AMG’s involvement did not turn this Galant into a turbocharged, four-wheel-drive rally replica. It produced a separate, naturally aspirated front-wheel-drive model, with cataloged engine, suspension, exterior, and interior tuning. Mitsubishi’s account makes the AMG collaboration an intriguing part of the lineup, while the VR-4 carried the turbo-and-rally identity.
