But the results do not show how much, if any, of the decline was caused by Elon Musk’s support for Donald Trump. Tesla reported several operating and market factors behind weaker automotive revenue, while contemporaneous reporting described customer backlash and Musk’s acknowledgment of “blowback.”
What did Tesla report in its Q1 2025 results?
Tesla announced its results on April 22, 2025, for the quarter ended March 31. The figures below compare Q1 2025 with Q1 2024, as reported in the company’s Form 10-Q and shareholder materials.

The figures show a business with sharply lower automotive revenue alongside growth in energy generation and storage and in services and other. The filing’s year-over-year comparisons show that the weaker quarter was not uniform across Tesla’s business lines.
What did Tesla say caused the automotive decline?
Tesla said automotive sales revenue decreased by $3.54 billion, or 21%, and cited multiple contributing factors in its filing. It said combined Model 3 and Model Y cash deliveries fell by approximately 51,000, partly because production lines across factories were taken down for the changeover to the New Model Y. Tesla also pointed to lower average selling prices related to sales mix, higher customer incentives such as financing offers, and the stronger U.S. dollar against foreign currencies.

Those explanations matter when assessing political backlash: Tesla identified direct production, pricing and currency factors, but did not report a dollar amount attributable to customer reactions to Musk’s politics.
Did Tesla say political sentiment could affect demand?
Yes. In its shareholder materials, Tesla warned: “This dynamic, along with changing political sentiment, could have a meaningful impact on demand for our products in the near-term.” The statement identified political sentiment as a possible demand factor; it did not say how much demand had already changed or quantify any impact on revenue or earnings.

Tesla also described trade-policy uncertainty as a risk to supply chains and costs, saying the tariff regime at the time would affect its energy generation and storage business more than its automotive business. The company characterized the auto industry as cyclical and sensitive to consumer trends, political and regulatory uncertainty, inflation and interest-rate movements.
Did Musk’s support for Trump hurt Tesla sales?
The available evidence supports treating political backlash as a plausible headwind, not as a measured explanation for the quarter’s financial decline. Axios reported on April 22, 2025, that Musk acknowledged “blowback” from his Trump ties on the earnings call and said he would take a significant step back from DOGE, likely beginning in May. The Associated Press also reported protests and customer backlash in the context of Tesla’s results, and said Musk planned to spend more time on Tesla and less on government work.

These reports connect customer response and Musk’s political activity in the same period as the results. They do not establish how many sales Tesla lost because of that response, whether those customers would otherwise have bought a Tesla, or what financial value any backlash had. Nor do they isolate political effects from the other factors Tesla disclosed.

- Established: Tesla itself warned that changing political sentiment could meaningfully affect near-term demand, and contemporaneous reports described backlash connected to Musk’s Trump ties.
- Not established: a specific dollar or percentage of Tesla’s Q1 decline caused by Musk’s political activity. The company did not quantify that effect in its filing or shareholder materials.
So the headline question has a qualified answer: Tesla’s Q1 results show a substantial financial downturn, and the company acknowledged political sentiment as a potential demand risk. They do not demonstrate that Musk’s support for Trump caused a particular share of that downturn.
