Reuters reported on April 18, 2025, that Tesla’s planned lower-cost Model Y had slipped behind its public production timeline, with anonymous sources placing a revised U.S. start anywhere from the third quarter of 2025 to early 2026. The cause was unclear, and Tesla had not confirmed those revised dates. The report is historical: the material available here does not establish whether the vehicle entered production or reached customers by October 4, 2026.
What Reuters reported about the delay
Three people familiar with the matter told Reuters, in a report syndicated by Investing.com on April 18, 2025, that U.S. production of Tesla’s planned lower-cost Model Y would begin at least a few months later than the company’s previously communicated plan. Their revised targets ranged from Q3 2025 to early 2026. Reuters said it was unclear why the timing had shifted.
Those dates were anonymous sources’ reported expectations, not a Tesla-confirmed schedule. In 2024, Tesla had said it was moving new models forward: “We have updated our future vehicle line-up to accelerate the launch of new models ahead of our previously communicated start of production in the second half of 2025,” according to Axios’s account of the company’s earnings communication. That earlier public timeline provides context for the Reuters report; it does not establish a later confirmed launch date.
What the planned vehicle was—and was not
Reuters described the program, internally codenamed E41, as a cheaper, stripped-down Model Y variant. Sources also expected it to be smaller than the refreshed Model Y. The reporting discussed a separate bare-bones Model 3 plan, which is a different vehicle program.

Do not treat “Model 2” as E41’s confirmed name or assume a retail name had been announced. TechCrunch’s historical account distinguishes Elon Musk’s earlier proposed $25,000 vehicle concept from the later reported strategy involving lower-cost Model Y and Model 3 vehicles. The $25,000 figure is concept context, not a reported E41 price.

- Two sources told Reuters Tesla aimed to produce 250,000 of the lower-cost Model Ys in the United States in 2026. That was a source-reported target, not a confirmed production total.
- Reuters reported eventual production plans in China and Europe. Sources familiar with China plans said E41 would cost 20% less to produce than the refreshed Model Y. That was an estimate, not a verified cost outcome.
- Reuters said the timing of a European rollout was unclear.
None of those projections establishes how many vehicles, if any, were ultimately built or where they became available.

The 2025 report does not answer that question for October 4, 2026. The information established here does not confirm whether E41 entered production, reached customers, kept its reported scope, or received an official retail name. The 2025–early 2026 targets should not be used as current launch guidance.

For a purchase decision, rely on Tesla’s current official listings for your market to confirm whether a vehicle can be ordered, its price, specifications, equipment and delivery timing. The reported E41 cost estimate and expected features are not retail specifications, and the available reporting does not provide a complete current comparison with orderable Tesla models or other EVs.
