Tesla’s HW4 Self-Driving Computer Failures Led to a Rearview-Camera Recall: What Owners Need to Know

A December 2024 report about faulty Tesla HW4 computers became an official recall involving loss of the rearview-camera display. Here is what failed and what owners should do.

Yes, the problem was real—but it was narrower than the headline suggested. In December 2024, reports described an unusual number of service requests involving failures of Tesla’s newer HW4 onboard car computer, sometimes informally called AI4.1. The failure could disable the rearview-camera display and camera-dependent driver-assistance features.

Tesla later acknowledged a related defect through a voluntary recall affecting certain Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles. Tesla’s remedy was an over-the-air software update, with free car-computer replacement for vehicles whose computers had already been damaged.

What happened?

On December 16, 2024, Electrek reported that owners of recently built Teslas were experiencing failures involving the newer HW4 onboard car computer. A December 17 MobileSyrup report summarized the story with the “overwhelmed” description.

Owners reportedly saw the rear camera disappear, sometimes shortly after delivery and sometimes after driving hundreds of miles. Camera-based driver assistance, Autopilot, and FSD-related functions could also become unavailable because they rely on the car computer.

“Overwhelmed,” however, is an attributed description of service pressure based on reporting, owner accounts, documents, and sources. It is not a verified company-wide statistic, and there is no reliable public failure-rate figure.

What actually failed?

HW4—also referred to in some reporting as AI4—is Tesla’s onboard car computer for processing camera data and supporting driver-assistance functions. It is hardware, not the FSD software itself. A failure in this computer can therefore affect several features at once, but it does not prove that Tesla’s entire FSD system or every Tesla computer is defective.

Tesla’s later recall materials described a power-up problem in which reverse current or a related power event could cause a shorting failure on the computer’s circuit board. The result could be loss of the rearview-camera display.

Early reporting said Tesla was investigating whether conditions involving the low-voltage battery and camera calibration contributed to the failures. That was an investigative possibility, not a conclusively established sole cause. Tesla’s official recall documentation is the better source for the recognized failure mechanism. See the NHTSA recall report and recall bulletin.

Why did this become a safety recall?

A rearview camera is a required safety feature, not merely an FSD convenience. Tesla stated that loss of the rearview-camera display failed to comply with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, sections S5.5 and S6.2. Reduced rear visibility can increase the risk of a collision while reversing.

The formal defect was therefore the unavailable rearview display. The loss of Autopilot, FSD, camera views, or other assistance features was an important operational consequence, but the recall’s regulatory focus was the rearview-camera requirement.

Which Teslas may be affected?

Tesla’s recall information identifies certain vehicles in these approximate model-year ranges:

  • Model 3: 2024–2025
  • Model Y: 2023–2025
  • Model S: 2024–2025
  • Model X: 2023–2025

These ranges do not establish eligibility by themselves. Applicability depends on the VIN, installed car computer, vehicle configuration, and software version. Tesla’s service bulletin says the model-year ranges are only a general approximation of the affected VIN population.

How Tesla fixed the problem

Over-the-air software update

Tesla changed the vehicle’s power-up sequence through an OTA update. The recall instructions identify software versions 2024.44.25.3, 2024.45.25.6, or later as qualifying remedy versions.

Vehicles that had not suffered the damaging condition generally did not need a service appointment after receiving the qualifying update. The update was intended to prevent the power-up event from causing the computer-board short.

Free computer replacement when damage had occurred

If the computer had already been damaged, software could not undo the physical failure. Tesla said it would replace the car computer at no cost under the recall. A reboot or camera recalibration should not be treated as proof that a physically damaged computer has been repaired.

What owners should do

  1. Check the vehicle’s VIN using Tesla’s VIN Recall Search. You can also check the NHTSA recall database in the United States.
  2. Check the car’s current software version, but do not rely on software alone. VIN status and service history remain decisive.
  3. If the rear camera is black, missing, or intermittent, open a service request in the Tesla app and specifically mention the rearview-camera display recall and the loss of camera functionality.
  4. Ask Tesla to apply the recall remedy rather than paying for an unrelated diagnostic repair if the symptoms match this issue.
  5. For a used Tesla, verify open recalls and whether the car computer was replaced before buying.

If the rear camera works but Autopilot or FSD is unavailable, do not automatically blame this recall. That combination may have another cause. Conversely, an intermittent camera should not be dismissed simply because it sometimes returns after a restart.

Is it safe to drive?

There is no universal safe-or-unsafe answer for every affected vehicle. Tesla warns that loss of the rearview-camera display increases collision risk. A driver may be able to reverse using mirrors and shoulder checks, but that is not equivalent to having the required camera display.

Avoid normal use until the problem is diagnosed if multiple cameras, driver-assistance functions, or safety alerts have failed. Follow Tesla’s current instructions and local legal requirements. Do not assume that a temporary reboot has resolved a hardware failure.

What remains uncertain?

The public evidence does not establish a precise failure rate, nor does it prove that Tesla’s entire service organization was literally overwhelmed. Official materials describe a “small percentage” of affected vehicles.

The issue also should not be described as every Tesla having a faulty self-driving computer. It involved certain vehicles equipped with specified HW4 computers and a particular power-up failure condition. Tesla issued a remedy, but owners should still verify their vehicle’s present VIN status rather than assuming every car was automatically fixed.

U.S. recall instructions may not apply in other markets. Canadian owners, for example, should consult Transport Canada’s recall information as well as Tesla’s local support channels. Recall databases are date-sensitive; Tesla’s page displayed data current as of August 1, 2026, so owners should check again for the latest status.
