Yes—Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot can pick up and put down several types of objects. Public demonstrations have shown it handling an egg, sorting battery cells, moving an automotive component and putting a trash bag into a bin.
That is a meaningful robotics milestone, particularly for a company that wants Optimus to work in factories. But the videos demonstrate selected pick-and-place tasks, not a robot that can reliably handle any object in an unsupervised home or production environment.
What Tesla has actually demonstrated
Optimus has progressed beyond simply walking and waving. Tesla has shown the robot using its hands to grasp objects, move them through space and release them at a target location.
| Demonstration | What Optimus did | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Egg handling | Picked up an egg, transferred it between its hands and placed it down gently. | Shows controlled gripping and force management with a fragile object. |
| Battery cells | Picked cells from a conveyor and inserted them into a tray. | Represents a repetitive factory sorting and insertion task. |
| Trash bag | Picked up a trash bag, opened a bin and put the bag inside. | Shows a more irregular household object and a multi-step action. |
| Model X component | Picked up a front-link component and placed it on a dolly. | Directly connects the robot’s capability to automotive production work. |
The egg video is impressive—but narrow
Tesla’s Optimus Gen 2 video, published on December 13, 2023, shows the robot picking up an egg, moving it from one hand to the other and setting it down. Tesla described Gen 2 as having faster and more capable hands.

An egg is a useful demonstration object because a successful grasp requires more than closing the fingers. Too much force can crack it; too little can cause it to slip. The robot also has to coordinate its arm movement, hand position and release.
However, the clip does not establish that Optimus can pick up every fragile object, recover from a slipping grip or perform the same action reliably at normal human speed. It proves that Tesla has trained the system for this specific class of manipulation.
Why pick-and-place matters at Tesla factories
For automotive manufacturing, picking something up and putting it down is not a party trick. Much of factory work consists of repeated movements between known locations: retrieving a component, orienting it, inserting it, placing it in a container or handing it to another station.
Tesla has shown Optimus sorting battery cells from a conveyor and placing them into a tray. The company said the task used a neural network running on the robot’s Full Self-Driving computer and was being tested with progressively less human intervention.
The robot has also been shown moving a Model X front-link component onto a dolly. A task like that could eventually be useful if the robot can identify the correct part, grasp it consistently, avoid collisions and maintain a high success rate over many hours.

Those conditions are important. A factory robot does not merely need to complete one successful cycle for a video. It needs to repeat the cycle thousands of times, detect errors and stop safely when a part is missing, damaged or incorrectly positioned.
It is not yet a general-purpose home robot
Tesla describes Optimus as a “general purpose, bi-pedal, autonomous humanoid robot” intended for unsafe, repetitive or boring work. That is the company’s objective, not a claim that every part of that objective has already been achieved.

Tesla has not published a general success rate for these demonstrations, a practical payload range, a complete list of supported object types or an independent benchmark for unsupervised household operation.
Do the videos prove Optimus is autonomous?
No—not automatically. A successful video can show what the robot did, but it does not by itself establish how much of the action was autonomous.
At Tesla’s October 10, 2024 “We, Robot” event, reports from the Los Angeles Times said that some Optimus robots interacting with attendees were remotely operated by human staff. That does not prove that every pick-and-place video was teleoperated. It does show why each demonstration needs to be judged by its stated operating mode.
Unless Tesla identifies a particular clip as fully autonomous, it is safer to describe the result as a demonstrated capability rather than proof of unsupervised operation. Autonomy requires the robot to perceive its surroundings, plan the movement, maintain balance, react to changes and recover from errors without a person guiding each action.
What this means for Tesla’s production plans
Tesla’s long-term argument is that a humanoid robot could use workplaces designed for people rather than requiring every task to be rebuilt around a specialized machine. That could make Optimus relevant to vehicle assembly, parts handling and warehouse work.

The company’s filings describe Gen 3 as a design intended for mass production, with production planned before the end of 2026 and an eventual planned capacity of 1 million robots per year. Those are forward-looking plans, not evidence that Tesla is currently producing 1 million units or that the robots have reached consumer-ready reliability.
Tesla’s filing lists Optimus capacity in California as “Construction.” It also warns that installed capacity is not the same thing as the current production rate. In other words, a planned factory capacity should not be reported as present output.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line on Tesla’s robot
It is outdated to say Optimus cannot pick anything up. Tesla has demonstrated several real pick-and-place tasks, from an egg and battery cells to a trash bag and an automotive part.
It is equally premature to call the robot a fully autonomous general-purpose assistant. The demonstrations show that Tesla can make Optimus perform selected manipulation tasks, sometimes in controlled settings and with the operating mode not fully disclosed. The next proof point is not another successful single-object video—it is repeatable performance, measured reliability and independent evidence that the robot can work safely with little or no supervision.

Can Optimus work as a fully autonomous home assistant?
That has not been established. The demonstrations show selected tasks in controlled conditions, not reliable unsupervised operation with arbitrary household objects.
Was every Optimus demonstration autonomous?
No. Reports said some robots at Tesla’s October 2024 “We, Robot” event were remotely operated. Tesla has not publicly established that every demonstration used the same operating mode.
Is Tesla already mass-producing 1 million Optimus robots per year?
No. Tesla has described an eventual planned capacity of 1 million units per year, while its filing lists Optimus manufacturing capacity as under construction. Planned capacity is not current production.
The Bottom Line
Optimus can pick up and put down objects, including automotive parts, but the evidence currently supports a narrow claim: Tesla has demonstrated specific manipulation skills, not a proven, fully autonomous robot ready for unrestricted factory or household work.
