The verdict followed an unusual trial for a Tesla crash lawsuit; it concerned the evidence in this case, not every Tesla vehicle or driver-assistance system.
What happened in the Key Largo crash?
On April 25, 2019, a Tesla Model S struck Naibel Benavides Leon and Dillon Angulo, who were outside stargazing in Key Largo. Benavides Leon died, and Angulo was seriously injured, according to Associated Press trial coverage.
The parties disputed the role of Autopilot. The plaintiffs argued that the system should have warned the driver and braked as the car approached flashing red lights, a stop sign and a T-intersection. Tesla argued that Autopilot was not involved and that a distracted driver caused the crash while reaching for a dropped phone. Those were opposing arguments at trial, not neutral findings about how the crash occurred.
What did the jury decide?
Fault and damages
On August 1, 2025, the jury assigned 33% of the fault to Tesla and 67% to the driver. It awarded $129 million in total compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages, according to Tesla’s SEC filing.

The Associated Press described the total award against Tesla as $243 million: $43 million in compensatory damages, reflecting Tesla’s share, plus $200 million in punitive damages. The jury award is not the same as a confirmed final payment; the records cited here do not establish whether it was later changed, paid or resolved on appeal.
Reactions to the verdict
After the verdict, Naibel Benavides Leon’s sister, Neima Benavides, said, “We finally learned what happened that night, that the car was actually defective,” and added, “Justice was achieved.” That was her reaction to the outcome, not a separate judicial finding.

Tesla called the verdict wrong and said it could “set back automotive safety” and “jeopardize Tesla’s and the entire industry’s efforts to develop and implement lifesaving technology,” the Associated Press reported.
Why was this Tesla crash lawsuit considered unusual?
The Associated Press reported that many similar Tesla crash lawsuits had been dismissed or settled before reaching trial. That makes the Benavides case notable for reaching a jury; it does not establish a numerical rate for how often such cases go to trial.

What the judge allowed before trial
Before trial, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom dismissed manufacturing-defect and negligent-misrepresentation claims but allowed other claims and the request for punitive damages to proceed. In a June 26, 2025 ruling, she said a reasonable jury could find reckless disregard based on the record presented, including arguments and evidence about warnings, prior safety concerns, public statements about Autopilot’s limitations, and the feasibility of restricting the system to intended conditions.
“A reasonable jury could find that Tesla acted in reckless disregard of human life for the sake of developing their product and maximizing profit.”

That statement, from Judge Bloom’s pretrial ruling, explained why the punitive-damages issue could be considered by the jury. It was not a finding before trial that Tesla was liable. The ruling also discussed an earlier National Transportation Safety Board recommendation to limit automated vehicle control to conditions for which it was designed.

Tesla’s June 2026 SEC filing says the district court denied Tesla’s post-trial motions on February 19, 2026. The court concluded that Tesla had not supplied arguments or controlling law that persuaded it to change its earlier decisions or the verdict, and that the trial evidence supported the jury’s verdict.

The same filing says Tesla submitted its opening brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit on July 2, 2026. The records cited here do not establish whether the appellate court has acted since then, so the appeal’s later status and the ultimate outcome remain unconfirmed here.
Tesla’s filing also says the company believed the facts and law did not justify the damages and that it recorded an “immaterial accrual.” Those are Tesla’s own assessments, not a court’s conclusion about the likely amount Tesla will ultimately pay.
Does the verdict apply to every Tesla Autopilot crash?
No. The verdict addressed a particular crash and the trial record in Benavides v. Tesla, Inc. It is not a blanket ruling that Autopilot caused every crash, or that every Tesla driver-assistance feature operates in the same way.
Separate investigations can inform the wider discussion of automated driving without changing what was decided in this case. For example, the NTSB’s investigation of a 2018 crash in Mountain View, California, concerned a different vehicle and incident. The board found that Autopilot steered the vehicle into a highway gore area because of system limitations, that the driver did not respond—likely because of distraction and overreliance—and that ineffective monitoring of driver engagement contributed. Those findings were not findings about the Benavides crash.
