A narrow transition rule may still help someone who signed a binding written contract and made a payment by that date, even if they took possession later. The credit was worth up to $7,500—not an automatic discount for every Tesla or buyer.
Did the Tesla tax credit expire?
Yes. The Internal Revenue Service says the new clean vehicle credit under Section 30D is available only for vehicles acquired on or before September 30, 2025. The IRS also says the previously owned clean vehicle credit and qualified commercial clean vehicle credit are unavailable for vehicles acquired after that date. For a Tesla bought after the cutoff, the federal new-vehicle credit is not available under this rule. The September 30, 2025 cutoff is not an upcoming deadline.
What the $7,500 figure meant
The IRS described the Section 30D credit as up to $7,500 for a new, qualified plug-in electric vehicle or fuel-cell electric vehicle. That was a maximum, not a guaranteed payment or price reduction for every Tesla. Eligibility depended on the exact vehicle and the applicable buyer and transaction requirements. The IRS’s new clean vehicle credit guidance does not establish blanket eligibility for Tesla as a brand or for every model, trim, buyer, or VIN.

Could a Tesla ordered before the deadline still qualify?
Possibly. For the termination rule, the IRS says a vehicle is acquired when the buyer enters a written binding contract and makes a payment. Payment may include a nominal down payment or a vehicle trade-in. Both the contract and payment must have occurred by September 30, 2025; an order or reservation alone should not be assumed to meet the rule. See the IRS FAQ for Public Law 119-21.
A qualifying buyer could take possession after September 30 and still potentially claim the credit when the vehicle was placed in service, provided all other requirements were met. The IRS defines placed in service as the date the buyer takes possession. Meeting the transition rule does not by itself prove that the particular vehicle or buyer qualified.

What to check for a potentially eligible purchase
If your Tesla transaction straddled the cutoff, gather the documents and verify each relevant point before claiming:
- Contract and payment: Confirm the date of the written binding contract and evidence of a payment made by September 30, 2025. Check transaction records for any down payment or trade-in.
- Exact vehicle: Use the vehicle identification number and the applicable IRS requirements to verify the vehicle’s qualification; do not rely on the Tesla name or model alone.
- Buyer and transaction requirements: Review the IRS eligibility rules for the buyer and the specific purchase. The cutoff exception does not waive the other conditions.
- Possession: Record when you took possession. That is the IRS’s placed-in-service point for this purpose.
- Seller report and filing records: Keep the seller’s vehicle qualification information and time-of-sale report. For an eligible pre-cutoff acquisition, IRS seller guidance says the seller was to submit the report through Energy Credits Online within three calendar days after possession. The IRS requires seller-provided eligibility information and reporting of the sale. If records are missing or dates do not line up, check the current IRS instructions and your transaction documents before filing. These general rules cannot determine an individual tax outcome.

Can you still claim the credit now?
The cutoff concerns when the vehicle was acquired, not simply when a tax return is filed. If you believe your contract and payment met the deadline and the remaining requirements were satisfied, review the applicable IRS filing instructions for the tax year and preserve the seller and purchase records. If you are unsure how the rules apply to your transaction, consult a qualified tax professional; verify that any preparer supports the relevant 2025 clean-vehicle credit filing.
