Tesla unveiled two autonomous-vehicle concepts at its “We, Robot” event in Burbank on October 10, 2024: the two-seat Cybercab, designed without a steering wheel or pedals, and the much larger Robovan, which Tesla said could carry up to 20 people and transport goods. The event rides took place on the Warner Bros. studio lot—not on public Los Angeles streets—so they did not demonstrate a public-road robotaxi service.

What Tesla unveiled at the “We, Robot” event

Tesla’s verified YouTube channel published the “We, Robot” event recording on October 10, 2024, including segments for the Robotaxi unveiling and the Robovan. Elon Musk presented both vehicles as part of Tesla’s autonomous-vehicle ambitions. The announcements described concepts and company targets; they did not establish that either vehicle was available to buy or operating as a public service.

Cybercab: a two-seat robotaxi concept

Tesla presented the Cybercab as a two-seat vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals. It was framed as a purpose-built robotaxi rather than a conventional car with a driver at the controls. The Associated Press reported that event attendees rode in Cybercabs on the Warner Bros. studio lot.

Robovan: a larger passenger and cargo concept

Tesla described the Robovan as designed for autonomy and space for up to 20. The Associated Press reported that it was intended to carry as many as 20 passengers and transport goods. “Up to 20” was the announced capacity claim, not a verified specification for a final production vehicle.

Cybercab and Robovan compared

Detail Cybercab Robovan
Announced role Two-seat robotaxi concept Autonomous passenger and goods vehicle
Capacity Two seats, as presented at the event Up to 20, as described by Tesla in 2024
Notable design or claim No steering wheel or pedals Designed for autonomy
Price announced at the event Elon Musk said in 2024 that it would cost less than $30,000 Not announced
Production or availability timing announced at the event Musk said availability was expected before 2027; Reuters reported Tesla planned to begin production in 2026. These were 2024 projections. Not announced
Further detailed specifications established by the event Not established in the cited event coverage Range, battery size, final passenger configuration, safety approval and public-service availability were not established

The contrast was chiefly one of intended scale and role: a small robotaxi versus a larger vehicle for passengers and goods. Tesla offered a Cybercab price and timing target, but no equivalent Robovan price or production schedule.

What Tesla’s price and timing claims meant

At the October 2024 event, Musk said Tesla expected the Cybercab to cost less than $30,000 and become available before 2027. Reuters reported that Tesla planned to start production in 2026. Those statements were projections made at the time, not confirmation that production or availability later occurred.

The studio-lot rides did not prove public-road operation

Attendees rode in Cybercabs within the Warner Bros. studio lot. That controlled event setting is distinct from carrying passengers without a driver on ordinary public roads in Los Angeles. The rides showed what Tesla presented at its unveiling; they were not evidence that a Tesla driverless service had begun operating on city streets.
