Nico Murillo, a Tesla production supervisor at the company’s Fremont facility, was laid off in April 2024 as part of a broader restructuring, according to reports by Futurism and Quartz. Those reports relay Murillo’s account that he slept in his car and showered at the factory on workdays to reduce the burden of his commute and support his work. They do not establish that Tesla eliminated his position because of that routine.
Was Murillo fired for sleeping in his car?
The reports do not show that he was. They place his layoff within a wider Tesla restructuring and quote a notice, reproduced in Murillo’s account, saying his position had been eliminated as a result of the restructuring. “Fired for sleeping in his car” therefore overstates what is established: the supported account is that he was laid off during restructuring, not because he slept in his car or showered at work.
Futurism reported that Tesla’s reductions affected more than 10 percent of employees, or about 14,000 workers worldwide. That is the approximate scale stated in the 2024 report, not an independently verified count here. Futurism also relayed a company memo describing the rationale as “duplication of roles and job functions in certain areas.” The account does not identify Murillo’s personal routine as a reason for his position’s elimination.
What Murillo said about his commute and work routine
Quartz reported that Murillo worked at Tesla’s Fremont facility and had a 90-minute commute. According to his account as relayed by Quartz, he began sleeping in his car in 2023 and showering at the factory on workdays. Futurism also reported that he said he made meals in a microwave to help meet production goals. These details come from Murillo’s reported statements; the articles do not independently verify his routine.

Quartz reported that Murillo had progressed over five years from Production Associate to Lead Production Associate and then Production Supervisor. It also described his account of learning about the layoff: his work account was deactivated, he received an email while driving to work, texted his manager, and was told at the factory entrance that he had been laid off. The timeline is Murillo’s account as relayed by Quartz, not an independently documented sequence.
What the layoff notice and reports establish
Quartz reproduced wording from a notice in Murillo’s account: “Unfortunately as a result, your position has been eliminated by this restructuring.” That wording is attributed to the email as quoted in his account; it should not be treated as a separate public statement from Tesla. Futurism and Quartz both connect the layoff to the broader restructuring, and neither reports evidence that his sleeping arrangements or use of the factory shower caused the decision.

Futurism quoted Murillo’s description of his reaction: “Sat in my car in disbelief.” The line, like the other personal details, is reported through the news coverage of his account.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced a separate lawsuit on September 28, 2023, alleging racial harassment of Black employees at Tesla’s Fremont manufacturing facilities and retaliation against some workers who objected. The agency sought damages and workplace reforms.
