What does the 21,900 figure mean?
Reuters reported on December 10, 2024, that Tesla China disclosed sales of 21,900 electric vehicles in China during the first week of December. Reuters characterized that as the company’s highest weekly sales in Q4 2024. The report does not establish that the number was an all-time weekly record. Reuters report republished by Investing.com.
The weekly-data archive at CnEVPost lists 21,900 Tesla insurance registrations for the week ending December 8, 2024. It lists 18,700 for the week ending December 1. Reuters uses the term “sales,” while the archive labels its weekly figures “insurance registrations”; those are the respective sources’ measures and should not be treated as interchangeable without further methodology. The archive’s two entries show 3,200 more registrations in the week ending December 8 than in the prior week. That comparison is limited to those reported weekly registration figures; it does not by itself explain why the number rose.

What context helps explain the December result?
Reuters reported that Tesla had sold more than 73,000 vehicles in China in November 2024. It also mentioned a limited-time 10,000-yuan loan discount and the Model Y’s role in the market. These details provide contemporaneous context, but they do not establish that the discount caused the weekly increase.
The Model Y and Model 3 are among the vehicles produced at Tesla’s Shanghai factory, according to CnEVPost’s reporting on CPCA data. Factory production and domestic China sales are not the same measure: the weekly figure here is presented as China sales by Reuters and as registrations in CnEVPost’s archive, not as a count of all vehicles produced in Shanghai. How does one strong week compare with later totals?
The 21,900 figure covers one week; it is not a December or full-year total. For a different time frame and measure, CnEVPost’s January 9, 2026 report of China Passenger Car Association data put Tesla’s China retail sales at 93,843 vehicles in December 2025 and 625,698 for full-year 2025. The report says December 2025 set a monthly retail record, surpassing the previous December high of 82,927 in December 2024, while full-year 2025 retail sales were down 4.78% from 2024.
Those monthly and annual retail totals cannot be directly compared with a single-week company sales disclosure or the archive’s insurance-registration figures: they cover different periods and use different labels. They do show why a record needs a stated time period and measurement. December 2025’s monthly high did not mean that Tesla’s full-year China retail sales rose.

Was it really a sales record?
The defensible description is that 21,900 was Tesla’s highest reported weekly sales figure in Q4 2024, according to Reuters’ account of Tesla China’s disclosure. The stronger phrase “shatters weekly sales record” appeared in TechTimes’ headline, but its article likewise described the performance as Tesla’s best week of Q4.
