The company describes them as cars used for demo drives or showroom staging, and says they typically have faster delivery and a lower purchase price. Whether one is a good buy depends on the specific car’s price, mileage, condition, configuration, warranty, and local registration rules.
Why is Tesla selling demo vehicles?
Tesla’s official Ordering a Tesla Demo Vehicle page says these cars have been used for demonstration, including demo drives and showroom staging. It does not give exceptionally high demand as the reason for offering them. The listings are available when local inventory permits.
Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 filing reported that automotive sales revenue rose $6.77 billion, or 24%, in the six months ended June 30, 2026, compared with the same period in 2025. Tesla attributed the increase in part to an approximately 18% rise in cash deliveries and the prior-period factory changeover to the New Model Y. Those company-level figures do not explain why any particular demo vehicle is listed. The filing also identifies product demand among business risks, but that is not evidence that unusually high demand caused demo sales.
What is a Tesla demo vehicle?
Tesla says demo vehicles have not previously been registered or titled to another individual. They are still cars that have been used for demonstration, so buyers should expect some use and normal wear consistent with the vehicle’s age and mileage. Tesla says each receives an internal cosmetic and mechanical inspection and may receive light repairs; that is Tesla’s preparation process, not an independent inspection report.

Are Tesla demo cars considered new?
Tesla says demo vehicles are typically considered new because they have not been titled to another individual. Registration and tax treatment can differ by location, so Tesla advises buyers to confirm the classification with their local DMV. Eligibility for state incentives depends on the applicable program; do not assume a demo car qualifies simply because Tesla describes it as typically new.
How much mileage and wear should you expect?
There is no fixed mileage figure in Tesla’s guidance. Mileage and availability vary with local inventory, so check the individual listing rather than relying on a general estimate. Tesla says normal wear and tear indicative of the car’s age and mileage should be expected.

Tesla’s listed demo-vehicle inspection standards allow, among other things, paint scratches up to 1 inch in one direction, dents or rock chips under 1/2 inch in diameter, and wheel damage under 6 inches. The page also lists at least 5/32 inch of tire tread and at least 6 mm of brake-pad thickness. These are Tesla’s stated standards, not a guarantee that a specific car has no other condition issues. Review the listing and inspect the actual vehicle before accepting delivery.
Does a Tesla demo vehicle come with a warranty?
Tesla says demo vehicles carry its Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty and Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty. Coverage details can depend on the individual vehicle and its purchase documents, so check both the listing and the paperwork before completing the order. Do not infer a specific remaining coverage period from the general statement that the warranties apply.

Is a demo Tesla cheaper than ordering a new one?
Tesla says demo vehicles typically have a lower purchase price and faster delivery than a custom-order vehicle. It does not publish a fixed discount or standard mileage allowance in the cited guidance. Compare the actual demo listing with a similarly configured custom order: the relevant difference is the specific price and delivery timing, weighed against the demo car’s mileage, condition, configuration, warranty details, and local tax or incentive treatment.

How do you buy a Tesla demo vehicle?
- Find an eligible listing. Tesla says demo listings carry a “Demo Vehicle” label. Availability depends on local inventory.
- Select the vehicle and delivery location. Choose a listed car and find the closest delivery location shown by Tesla.
- Review the exact vehicle. Check its price, mileage, configuration, visible condition, warranty information, and delivery details. Ask Tesla about anything the listing does not make clear.
- Confirm payment and registration details. Depending on location, leasing, financing, outright purchase, and trade-in may be available. Confirm the payment plan and amount due with Tesla before delivery, and check local DMV classification and incentive rules.
- Place the order only when ready. Tesla says the order requires a one-time, non-refundable order fee.
- Plan for charging at home. Tesla advises buyers to plan home charging and order charging accessories. What equipment is appropriate depends on the vehicle, electrical setup, and local requirements.
