That is a one-month comparison, not a 40% annual collapse. The contrast came as the EU’s electric-car market expanded, pointing to a brand-specific struggle amid fiercer competition—not a broad retreat from electrified cars.
What the July 2025 figures actually measure
The figures are new-vehicle registrations, not deliveries, revenue or a count of battery-electric cars alone. Reuters, reporting ACEA data, gives Tesla 8,837 registrations in July across the EU, UK and EFTA, down 40.2% from July 2024. BYD recorded 13,503, up 225.3% year over year in that same region. In July, BYD therefore registered more vehicles than Tesla in the region, and its market share was 1.2% versus Tesla’s 0.8%; Tesla’s share had been 1.4% a year earlier. Reuters’ ACEA-based July report covers both the EU and the wider EU-plus-EFTA-and-UK scope.
These are not EU-only figures. The EU is a narrower geography than the EU, UK and EFTA combined, so counts and percentage changes differ when the scope changes. BYD also sells plug-in hybrids as well as battery-electric vehicles; Tesla sells battery-electric vehicles only. The marque totals above include registrations across each brand’s powertrain mix and should not be read as a head-to-head comparison of BEV registrations alone.
Why Tesla can be down while the electric-car market grows
In July 2025, EU car registrations rose 7.4% year over year, according to Reuters’ report of ACEA data. Battery-electric registrations increased 39.1%, hybrids 56.9% and plug-in hybrids 14.3%. Together, those three categories made up 59.8% of EU registrations, up from 51.1% in July 2024. The figures show that Tesla’s steep fall coincided with growth in electrified-car registrations; they do not, on their own, establish why particular buyers chose other brands.

The wider competitive picture was not limited to Tesla and BYD. Across the EU, UK and EFTA, total registrations rose 5.9% in July. Volkswagen registrations increased 11.6% and Renault’s 8.8%, while Stellantis registrations fell 1.1%. A growing market can still produce sharply different results between manufacturers as buyers weigh more models and powertrains.
What may be behind Tesla’s weaker performance
More competing models, including lower-cost options
In Tesla’s 2025 proxy materials, a shareholder proponent argued that competition had increased as BYD emerged as a low-cost competitor and manufacturers from the United States, Europe, Japan and Korea introduced new EVs in North American and European markets. The filing linked that competition to a divergence between Tesla sales and overall EV sales. This is an argument reproduced in Tesla’s proxy materials, not an independent measurement of what caused the European decline. Tesla’s 2025 proxy materials also discuss reports connecting some sales declines to negative sentiment toward Elon Musk’s political activities. That possibility is worth distinguishing from proven causation: the filing does not quantify how much sentiment affected European registrations.

Model timing and buyer choice
The proxy materials discuss Tesla’s refreshed Model Y and its model lineup, but the evidence cited here does not isolate the refresh’s effect on registrations. A changeover or updated model may be relevant context, but it cannot be assigned a specific share of the July drop from these figures. More broadly, rising market totals alongside Tesla’s decline establish a contrast in performance—not a complete account of individual purchase decisions.
Did BYD overtake Tesla for all of 2025?
No. BYD led Tesla in the July monthly comparison, but Tesla still recorded more vehicles across the full year in the wider EU, EFTA and UK region. ACEA full-year figures reported by CnEVPost show Tesla with 238,656 registrations in 2025, down 26.9% from 326,525 in 2024. BYD had 187,657, up 268.6% from 50,912. BYD grew much faster, but its 2025 total remained lower in that regional scope. These marque totals are not BEV-only comparisons.

Tesla remained ahead in the EU-only annual count as well. The geography must stay attached to each figure because EU totals and EU-plus-EFTA-and-UK totals are not interchangeable. How to read the “surging ahead” claim
- Accurate for July registrations: BYD’s July total exceeded Tesla’s across the EU, UK and EFTA.
- Accurate for growth rate: BYD’s July and full-year percentage increases were far larger, starting from a smaller base.
- Not accurate as a full-year 2025 volume claim: Tesla registered more vehicles than BYD across both the EU, UK and EFTA and the EU alone.
- Not a like-for-like BEV comparison: BYD’s marque totals include plug-in hybrids as well as BEVs, whereas Tesla’s are BEVs.
The clearest conclusion is that Tesla’s European registrations weakened sharply in July 2025 while BYD gained ground and the broader electrified market expanded. The available figures show the scale and context of that divergence; they do not prove a single cause for it.
