As of August 14, 2026 UTC, Tesla Robotaxi: Everything Confirmed So Far is a limited autonomous ride-hailing service launched in June 2025, using Model Y vehicles in mapped zones across six Florida and Texas cities. Limited unsupervised rides began in Austin in January 2026, but Cybercab remains future-facing and the network is not uniformly driverless or nationwide.
Tesla’s official materials confirm a functioning but geographically restricted service, an app-based booking and ride-control process, and a gradual transition in some operating contexts away from a safety monitor. Tesla’s materials do not support claims of nationwide coverage, a universal fare, or a fully unsupervised ride in every listed city.
Key takeaways
- Tesla Robotaxi launched in June 2025. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K describes Robotaxi as an autonomous ride-hailing service that currently operates with Model Y vehicles and is intended to add Cybercab over time.
- Tesla Support currently lists limited service in six cities: Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Austin, Dallas, and Houston, with availability confined to displayed service zones rather than entire metropolitan areas.
- Cybercab is not the current Robotaxi vehicle. Tesla describes Cybercab as a future purpose-built fully autonomous vehicle, while current rides begin with Model Y.
- Unsupervised operation is limited and location-specific. Tesla says it began removing the safety monitor from Austin Robotaxis on a limited basis in January 2026; that statement does not mean every Austin ride or every city is driverless.
- There is no confirmed permanent nationwide Robotaxi fare. The app displays an estimated fare, while Tesla’s terms say charges are shown in U.S. dollars and may include tolls, airport fees, and regulatory charges.
- Safety readiness remains under regulatory examination. NHTSA asked Tesla to explain how it determines readiness to operate with and without supervision, including crash response and minimal-risk stopping procedures.
Is Tesla Robotaxi available yet?
Yes. Tesla Robotaxi is operating commercially, but the confirmed service is limited by geography, vehicle, and operating policy. According to Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K, Tesla launched its Robotaxi service in June 2025 as an autonomous ride-hailing platform. The filing says the current fleet uses Model Y vehicles and that Cybercab is intended to join the service over time.
“Available” does not mean nationwide, citywide, or uniformly unsupervised. Tesla’s public landing page and Support documentation describe a limited service area, and the Support page provides the more detailed current city list. A rider’s ability to request a vehicle at a particular address depends on whether the address appears inside the service area shown by Tesla’s app.

Where can I ride a Tesla Robotaxi?
Tesla Support currently lists limited Robotaxi service in Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida, and Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas. The city names identify markets with listed service; they do not establish coverage across every street, airport, suburb, or surrounding community. Tesla’s Robotaxi Support page is the controlling reference for the displayed service area and rider instructions.
| City and state | What Tesla currently confirms | Coverage interpretation | Safety-monitor status established by the reviewed materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami, Florida | Limited Robotaxi service listed by Tesla Support | Use only inside the mapped area displayed by Tesla | A citywide unsupervised policy is not established here |
| Orlando, Florida | Limited Robotaxi service listed by Tesla Support | Use only inside the mapped area displayed by Tesla | A citywide unsupervised policy is not established here |
| Tampa, Florida | Limited Robotaxi service listed by Tesla Support | Use only inside the mapped area displayed by Tesla | A citywide unsupervised policy is not established here |
| Austin, Texas | Limited Robotaxi service listed by Tesla Support | Use only inside the mapped area displayed by Tesla | Tesla says limited safety-monitor removal began in January 2026; not every ride is thereby confirmed unsupervised |
| Dallas, Texas | Limited Robotaxi service listed by Tesla Support | Use only inside the mapped area displayed by Tesla | A citywide unsupervised policy is not established here |
| Houston, Texas | Limited Robotaxi service listed by Tesla Support | Use only inside the mapped area displayed by Tesla | A citywide unsupervised policy is not established here |
Tesla’s shorter product page names Miami, Austin, Dallas, and Houston, while Tesla Support lists the more detailed six-city set above. The Support page is the better source for the current availability table, but riders should still check the app because service boundaries, hours, and eligibility can change.
How do I request a Tesla Robotaxi?
You request a Tesla Robotaxi through Tesla’s Robotaxi app, which shows whether the pickup location and destination are inside the displayed service area. Tesla’s published rider flow is:
- Open the Robotaxi app.
- Enter a destination that falls within the service area shown in the app.
- Review the estimated fare and wait time.
- Confirm the ride.
- When the vehicle arrives, check that the license plate matches the app before entering.
- Enter, close the door, fasten the seatbelt, and tap Start Ride.
During the trip, Tesla says passengers can adjust climate and seat settings, stream music, and use the app or the vehicle touchscreen to request support. A rider can also request that the vehicle pull over or stop; Tesla Support says the vehicle will stop at the nearest and safest location under its stated procedure. The complete rider flow is documented on Tesla Support’s Robotaxi page.

According to Tesla’s Robotaxi product page in 2026, the Tesla app is currently available in 29 languages, with more languages being added. That language figure describes app availability, not a guarantee that every in-car interaction or support exchange is available in all 29 languages.

How much does a Tesla Robotaxi cost?
The confirmed answer is that Tesla does not publish one permanent nationwide Robotaxi fare in the reviewed materials. The app shows an estimated fare before a rider confirms a trip, and Tesla’s terms state that charges appear in U.S. dollars and may include additional items such as tolls, airport fees, regulatory charges, and similar costs.
| Cost question | What is confirmed |
|---|---|
| Where is the fare shown? | In the Robotaxi app before the ride is confirmed |
| What currency is used? | U.S. dollars, according to Tesla’s terms |
| Are extra charges possible? | Yes. Tesla lists tolls, airport fees, regulatory charges, and similar costs as possible additions |
| Is there one national price? | No permanent nationwide fare is established by the reviewed official materials |
Because fares, operating zones, and service policies can change, the estimate displayed for the specific pickup and destination is more useful than an old promotional price. Tesla’s Robotaxi Terms explain the categories of charges but do not establish a single national price.
Is there a driver in a Tesla Robotaxi?
Sometimes a safety monitor may be present, and Tesla has begun limited operation without a safety monitor in Austin; Tesla Robotaxi should not be described as uniformly driverless across its network. The distinction matters because a ride can be offered under Tesla’s autonomous-service description while still operating with a human safety monitor in a particular city, vehicle, or operating phase.

Tesla’s Q4 and full-year 2025 update says the company began removing the safety monitor from Austin Robotaxis on a limited basis in January 2026. The same material shows different market statuses, including a safety-driver status for the San Francisco Bay Area and ramping or planned statuses for other cities. Those statuses do not establish current public availability or a single driverless policy throughout the network.
Do not conflate Robotaxi with a privately owned Tesla using FSD (Supervised). Tesla’s customer-facing FSD label continues to require an attentive driver, whereas Robotaxi is a separate service operated by Tesla under its own deployment and monitoring policies.

What car does Tesla use for Robotaxi?
Tesla currently uses Model Y vehicles for Robotaxi rides. Cybercab is a separate, purpose-built vehicle that Tesla says will be used for future autonomous rides, so Cybercab is not confirmed as the vehicle currently carrying ordinary Robotaxi passengers.
| Vehicle | Confirmed role | Autonomy and availability wording | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model Y | Current vehicle used to provide Robotaxi rides | Tesla’s current Robotaxi service is described as autonomous, but unsupervised operation is limited by context | Whether every Model Y ride is unsupervised, the total active fleet, and city-by-city vehicle configurations |
| Cybercab | Future purpose-built Robotaxi vehicle | Tesla calls it a purpose-built fully autonomous vehicle and says it will offer rides in the future | Completed volume production, customer deliveries, ordinary passenger deployment, final specifications, and a confirmed launch date |
Tesla’s product page states: “Cybercab, our purpose-built fully autonomous vehicle, will offer rides in your area in the future.” The phrase “in the future” is important: it supports describing Cybercab as planned, not as the current standard Robotaxi vehicle. Tesla’s Robotaxi product page also says rides are beginning with Model Y.
Earlier Tesla investor materials described volume production for Cybercab as scheduled to begin in 2026. A production schedule is a company plan, not evidence that volume production, customer deliveries, or passenger deployment had been completed by August 14, 2026 UTC. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K distinguishes the current Model Y operation from the intended future addition of Cybercab.
What happened when Tesla launched Robotaxi?
Tesla’s confirmed timeline shows a progression from regulatory questioning to a limited commercial launch and then a narrowly described expansion of unsupervised operation.
| Date | Confirmed development | Source and significance |
|---|---|---|
| May 8, 2025 | NHTSA issued an information request concerning Robotaxi readiness and safety | The request sought Tesla’s methods for determining readiness with and without supervision; it was not itself a finding that the system was unsafe or unlawful |
| June 2025 | Tesla launched Robotaxi service | Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies June 2025 as the launch month |
| January 2026 | Tesla began removing the safety monitor from Austin Robotaxis on a limited basis | Tesla’s Q4 and full-year 2025 update describes a limited Austin change, not a network-wide switch |
| August 14, 2026 UTC | Current editorial snapshot | Tesla Support lists limited service in six Florida and Texas cities; boundaries and policies remain changeable |
What safety questions has NHTSA raised?
NHTSA has asked Tesla to explain the processes it uses to determine whether Robotaxi is ready for on-road operation both with and without supervision. The request addresses crash detection and response, stable stopped or minimal-risk conditions, post-incident procedures, and interaction with first responders.

NHTSA’s information request says: “Explain the methods and processes (e.g., establishing a safety case) in detail that are employed by Tesla to determine readiness of the robotaxi system for on-road use with and without supervision.” — National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, information request dated May 8, 2025. The wording comes from the official NHTSA information request.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe document demonstrates regulatory information gathering and scrutiny. It does not, by itself, prove that Tesla Robotaxi is unsafe, unlawful, or unready. A fair assessment must distinguish a regulator’s request for methods and evidence from a regulator’s final finding.
Tesla has also described its initial Austin approach as camera-only, with neural networks trained using data from its global fleet. Those are Tesla’s technical and safety claims, not independent proof that the system is safe, fully autonomous, or equivalent to a human-driven taxi in every situation.

Tesla’s Robotaxi Privacy Notice describes several forms of cabin and vehicle data handling, but the notice is narrower than a claim that cameras continuously identify every passenger.
| Feature or data use | Tesla’s stated disclosure | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin-camera analytics for service improvement | Riders can opt in to share cabin-camera analytics with Tesla to help improve Robotaxi services | Sharing for this purpose is described as optional |
| Cabin camera when a safety monitor is present | Tesla says the camera may be used to detect inattentiveness | This disclosure does not establish continuous identity recognition |
| Sound detection | Tesla describes sound detection for support requests and certain safety events, including nearby sirens or emergency vehicles | Audio-related functions can support assistance and safety responses |
| Account linkage | Tesla says opt-in cabin-camera data used for service improvement is not linked to the rider’s account | This statement applies to the described service-improvement data, not necessarily every category of Robotaxi data |
| Post-ride checks | Tesla describes checking whether the vehicle is clean and whether items have been left behind | Passengers should avoid assuming the cabin is an unmonitored private space |
The Tesla Robotaxi Privacy Notice should be read for the current details and limitations. Privacy terms can change, and the notice’s specific disclosures should not be expanded into unsupported claims about permanent passenger identification.

Can Tesla Robotaxi accommodate accessibility needs?
Tesla says its Robotaxi vehicles are designed to support various accessibility needs, including space for service animals and room for some wheelchairs and other assistive devices. Tesla’s statement is a design and service claim, not a complete independent accessibility audit or a guarantee that every mobility device can be accommodated in every city.
Riders with a specific wheelchair, mobility aid, or service requirement should verify the available vehicle and support options for the actual pickup location before relying on a Robotaxi trip. The reviewed official evidence does not provide city-by-city accessibility performance data or a universal accommodation guarantee. Tesla’s general Robotaxi description contains the company’s accessibility wording.
What remains unconfirmed about Tesla Robotaxi?
- Nationwide availability: The confirmed service is limited to displayed zones in listed Florida and Texas markets, not the entire United States.
- Uniformly driverless rides: Tesla has confirmed limited safety-monitor removal in Austin, but the reviewed evidence does not show that every ride in every listed city is unsupervised.
- A single national price: Tesla provides app-based fare estimates and lists possible additional charges, but no permanent nationwide fare is established.
- Cybercab passenger service: Cybercab is described as future-facing; completed volume production, deliveries, and ordinary passenger deployment were not confirmed by the research timestamp.
- Independent safety performance: The reviewed materials do not provide a suitable current authoritative figure for cumulative paid miles, active vehicles, completed rides, accident rate, or profitability.
- Affiliate or referral availability: The reviewed Tesla Robotaxi pages and terms do not establish a public affiliate, referral, or commerce program for rides, the app, Cybercab, or Robotaxi merchandise.
For Model Y owners and operators
Tesla identifies Model Y as the current vehicle used for Robotaxi, so a Model Y owner maintaining a car for high-mileage use may reasonably consider compatible all-weather protection. Marketplace research shows an active category for Tesla Model Y floor mats, but floor mats are an owner-maintenance accessory, not a passenger requirement or Tesla endorsement.
Before buying, verify the exact model year and whether the vehicle is a legacy Model Y or the 2025–2026 Juniper version. Any product described as fitting a Model Y should not automatically be assumed to fit every Model Y configuration.

Tesla Robotaxi is a real but tightly limited operating service, not a nationwide fleet of uniformly driverless taxis. Model Y is the current vehicle, Austin has limited unsupervised operation, Cybercab remains a future product, fares vary by trip, and safety and regulatory questions remain active.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Tesla Robotaxi is operating in limited mapped zones across six listed Florida and Texas markets, primarily with Model Y vehicles. Limited unsupervised Austin rides do not make the entire network driverless, and Cybercab remains a future purpose-built vehicle rather than the current passenger fleet.
