Short answer: Tesla Robotaxi is a real but tightly limited autonomous ride service. Tesla says it is available in restricted areas of Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, with coverage and operating hours controlled through the Robotaxi app. The current fleet uses Model Y vehicles; Cybercab is a future vehicle, not the standard car passengers should expect today.
What is Tesla Robotaxi?
Tesla Robotaxi is Tesla’s autonomous ride service: passengers request a trip through a dedicated Robotaxi app, choose a destination inside the displayed service area, review the estimated fare and wait time, and confirm the ride. Tesla then sends an arrival notification and identifies the vehicle by its license plate.

It is a real, limited commercial service rather than only a concept, but it is not a nationwide taxi network. Tesla’s coverage is constrained by city, local geofence, operating hours, app access, and evolving operating conditions. The most accurate description is a limited autonomous ride-hailing deployment.

- Austin, Texas
- Dallas, Texas
- Houston, Texas
- Miami, Florida
- Orlando, Florida
- Tampa, Florida
Tesla’s public Robotaxi product page highlights Miami, Austin, Dallas, and Houston, while the support page provides the fuller six-city list. For that reason, the safest current wording is that Tesla says Robotaxi is available in limited areas of Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa.
Being listed as an available city does not mean the entire metropolitan area is covered. Riders see a live service-area map in the Robotaxi app, and Tesla says operating hours can vary by area. A pickup address outside that map—or a request made outside local operating hours—may not be accepted.
How to book and take a Robotaxi ride
- Open the dedicated Robotaxi app. You need a mobile device to request and manage the trip.
- Check the service map. Confirm that both the pickup location and destination are inside the displayed coverage area. Do not rely only on the city name.
- Enter the destination. The app shows an estimated wait time and fare before you confirm.
- Review the charges. Tesla describes the introductory pricing structure as a simple rate plus applicable taxes and fees. Its terms say the total may also include tolls, airport fees, regulatory charges, and similar items.
- Confirm the trip. Tesla’s support information says you cannot use the service to book a ride for another person, so the requesting rider must use the app and mobile device themselves.
- Match the vehicle. When the vehicle arrives, Tesla says riders should verify its license plate before entering.
- Get in and buckle up. The front-left seat is off-limits to passengers. After entering and fastening the seat belt, tap Start Ride in the app.
- Manage the ride when necessary. Passengers can request a pull-over or stop through the app or the vehicle touchscreen. Tesla also says customer support can contact the rider through the touchscreen.
The experience is therefore app-mediated from beginning to end. It is not currently structured like a conventional taxi that can be hailed on the street, booked by telephone, or routinely arranged for somebody else.
How much does Tesla Robotaxi cost?
There is no single permanent public fare that applies to every Robotaxi trip. The app displays the estimated price before the rider confirms, and Tesla says pricing can change.
In addition to the base or simple rate described by Tesla, the final charge may reflect:
- Applicable taxes
- Tolls
- Airport fees
- Regulatory charges
- Other similar trip-related fees
That means a fare seen in one city—or even on one route—should not be treated as a universal Tesla Robotaxi price. Check the estimate and the applicable charges in the app for every trip, particularly for airport journeys.
What vehicle do Robotaxi passengers ride in?
Tesla says the initial Robotaxi fleet consists of Model Y vehicles. Cybercab is the company’s separate purpose-built autonomous vehicle for future Robotaxi rides; it is not the standard vehicle passengers should expect today.
Tesla’s support and product materials list the following Model Y Robotaxi figures:
| Specification | Tesla-listed figure |
|---|---|
| Initial fleet vehicle | Model Y |
| Passenger restriction | Passengers may not sit in the front-left seat |
| Step-in height | 17 inches |
| Ground clearance | 6.6 inches |
| Interior headroom | 39.4 inches |
| Legroom | 40.5 inches |
| Rear-trunk capacity | 29 cubic feet without folding the second row |
During a ride, passengers can adjust climate and seat settings, access media and entertainment features, and view trip information. Tesla says climate and media preferences can be saved in a passenger profile, and some settings belonging to Tesla owners may carry over.
For owners or fleet operators thinking about the wear caused by repeated passenger use, Tesla Model Y floor mats are a more relevant accessory category than generic travel products. They are not required to book or take a Robotaxi, and exact model-year compatibility and availability should be checked before buying.

Is Tesla Robotaxi actually driverless?
The answer depends on the market and deployment phase. Tesla describes Robotaxi as an autonomous ride service and provides passenger controls designed for a ride without a conventional driver. However, Tesla’s public support material does not provide a complete city-by-city table showing that every listed market operates under identical supervision conditions.

Reuters reported that Tesla announced unsupervised Robotaxi operation across the Austin metropolitan area on June 3, 2026. That report is important, but it should not be generalized into a claim that every Robotaxi ride in Austin, or every ride in all six listed cities, has the same supervision status.
A careful description is: Tesla operates an autonomous Robotaxi service, with supervision, geofencing, operating hours, and other conditions potentially varying by market. Check the current app experience and Tesla’s latest local information rather than assuming that a ride in Miami operates under exactly the same conditions as one in Austin.
Robotaxi is not the same as Full Self-Driving (Supervised)
Tesla’s consumer-facing Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature and Robotaxi are related to Tesla’s autonomy ambitions, but they are not interchangeable products.
| Robotaxi | Full Self-Driving (Supervised) | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Commercial passenger transportation | Consumer driver-assistance feature |
| Passenger or owner role | Passenger requests a ride and does not occupy the front-left driver position | A human driver supervises the vehicle |
| Operating controls | Service area, hours, fleet policies, and commercial operating procedures | Feature-specific operating limits and driver-supervision requirements |
| Safety case | Must address passenger service, remote support, failures, emergency response, and fleet monitoring | Relies on an attentive human supervisor in the consumer vehicle |
The distinction is central. A Tesla being able to perform a route with FSD (Supervised) does not, by itself, establish that the same vehicle is ready to carry commercial passengers without real-time human supervision.

NHTSA’s information request to Tesla illustrates the scope of the safety questions surrounding Robotaxi. The agency asked Tesla to provide information about matters including:
- Operational design domain: the conditions in which the service is intended to operate, including time of day, weather, geofencing, and maximum speed.
- Failures and crashes: how Tesla handles collisions, system failures, and other events that interrupt normal operation.
- Leaving the approved operating domain: what happens when the vehicle encounters conditions outside its permitted area or operating limits.
- Minimal-risk conditions: how the vehicle reaches a safe stopped state when it cannot continue normally.
- First-responder interaction: how the vehicle recognizes and responds to police, fire, ambulance, road closures, and emergency scenes.
- Readiness thresholds: how Tesla determines whether the system is ready to operate with or without real-time human supervision.
- Validation and monitoring: how performance metrics, simulation, test-track work, on-road testing, validation, and continuous monitoring support the deployment.
An information request is not a final finding that Tesla’s system is unsafe, nor does it establish that every issue raised has resulted in a failure. It does show which parts of the safety case regulators consider material. A responsible Robotaxi assessment must look beyond whether a vehicle can drive a normal route and ask how it handles unusual, degraded, and emergency situations.
Why first responders matter
A commercial autonomous vehicle must behave predictably around emergency scenes. It may encounter a police stop, a fire truck blocking a lane, an ambulance approaching from behind, temporary road closures, hand signals, debris, or an accident that changes the planned route. The vehicle also needs a reliable way to stop safely and communicate when it cannot proceed.
NHTSA’s request specifically includes first-responder interaction and minimal-risk behavior. These are not edge topics that can be left out of a general Robotaxi explanation; they are part of determining whether an autonomous passenger service can operate responsibly outside ideal conditions.
Passenger features and rider controls
Robotaxi passengers are not expected to operate the vehicle, but they do have controls over the ride experience. Tesla says passengers can:

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
- Adjust climate settings
- Adjust seat settings
- Use media and entertainment features
- View trip information
- Request a pull-over or stop through the app or touchscreen
- Contact or be contacted by Tesla support through the vehicle touchscreen
Tesla says passenger profiles can save climate and media preferences. Some Tesla-owner settings may also carry over, although passengers should not assume that every personal vehicle setting will be available in a Robotaxi.
Accessibility, service animals, and pets
Tesla says service animals are permitted under its service-animal policy. Pets, however, are not generally allowed.
Wheelchair access requires more qualification. Tesla’s support material says that riders needing wheelchair-accessible-vehicle service are currently directed to third-party providers in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and Miami. Tesla also says it is developing more tailored accessible ride options for its fleet.
That does not mean every current Robotaxi is wheelchair accessible. Dedicated wheelchair-accessible Robotaxi availability remains limited and market-specific. Riders who need an accessible vehicle should verify the current option before requesting a trip rather than assuming that a Model Y Robotaxi can accommodate every mobility device.
Cybercab: Tesla’s purpose-built Robotaxi
Cybercab is Tesla’s purpose-built autonomous vehicle concept for future Robotaxi rides. Tesla’s official Robotaxi materials distinguish it from the current service: today’s rides begin with Model Y vehicles, while Cybercab is described as a future vehicle.
As of August 12, 2026, Cybercab should not be described as the vehicle passengers normally receive. A July 2026 report said Tesla had begun making first production Cybercabs in Austin, but also reported that the company had moved away from a plan to reach volume production in 2026.
The practical takeaway is that prototype or early-production activity may exist without broad commercial availability. First production vehicles, a production target, and a large deployed fleet are three different milestones. Readers should wait for confirmed production scale, service-area announcements, and actual ride availability before treating Cybercab as the normal Robotaxi experience.

California and the regulatory picture
Robotaxi deployment is not only a vehicle-technology issue. It also involves passenger-carrier rules, insurance, accessibility, vehicle inspection, data reporting, emergency-response procedures, and state-specific permissions.
California’s Public Utilities Commission opened a rulemaking concerning autonomous-vehicle passenger transportation service. Tesla filed comments in that proceeding dated October 31, 2025. The filing demonstrates that Tesla was engaging with California’s regulatory process, but it does not by itself establish a final statewide authorization for Tesla to operate a commercial Robotaxi service there.
This distinction matters whenever a company participates in a rulemaking. Comments, proposals, and regulatory discussions are not the same as a final operating approval. A California launch—or any launch in another state—would need to be evaluated using the applicable state and local permissions, not inferred from Tesla’s participation in a proceeding.

What Tesla Robotaxi means for the wider autonomous-vehicle market
Tesla’s deployment represents a shift from demonstrations toward a constrained commercial passenger service. It does not prove that universal driverless transportation has been solved. The difficult work includes maintaining a safe operating domain, dealing with failures and emergency scenes, supporting passengers, meeting accessibility obligations, and demonstrating performance over time.
Those requirements may create future opportunities around autonomous fleet services, including fleet maintenance, EV charging and energy management, autonomous-vehicle insurance, accessibility transportation, passenger-support systems, and safety or compliance software. These are logical industry categories, not confirmed Tesla partners or approved affiliate recommendations.
For creators documenting Robotaxi launches or long-running autonomous-vehicle coverage, specialized cloud livestreaming may also be relevant in a separate production workflow. It is not an in-car entertainment service, a Tesla partner, or part of Robotaxi operations.
