The second-generation Tesla Roadster remains a development project, not a production sports car. Tesla still advertises reservations and quotes extraordinary performance targets, but it has not published a firm launch date, final price, production specification, or delivery schedule.
That distinction matters. The Roadster’s headline numbers—1.9 seconds to 60 mph, a claimed range of 620 miles, and a top speed above 250 mph—come from Tesla, not independent testing. Until customer cars exist, this is best evaluated as a promising but unfinished electric supercar concept.
2026 Tesla Roadster status: Is it available yet?
No. As of August 9, 2026, the second-generation Roadster has not entered regular production and has not been delivered to customers.
Tesla’s latest publicly available capacity filing lists the Roadster as “TBD” for capacity and “In development.” Tesla’s official Roadster page still includes Reserve Now and Get Updates options, but it does not give buyers a confirmed production or delivery date.

Elon Musk previously identified April 1, 2026 as a reveal target. That did not become a completed production launch. A June 2026 report said a public demonstration had moved to August or later, but that was a reported target rather than a Tesla-confirmed delivery timetable.
In practical terms, the Roadster is not a car you can order for a guaranteed delivery slot, test-drive at a Tesla store, or compare using independent road-test data.
Tesla Roadster specifications
These are the figures Tesla currently publishes for the proposed car:
| Specification | Tesla’s published figure |
|---|---|
| 0–60 mph | 1.9 seconds |
| Top speed | More than 250 mph |
| Range | 620 miles |
| Seating | Four |
| Roof | Removable glass roof stored in the trunk |
Those numbers are manufacturer claims for a vehicle still under development. Tesla has not publicly confirmed the production Roadster’s battery capacity, charging rate, curb weight, horsepower, torque, dimensions, cargo volume, EPA range certification, or final drivetrain layout.
Several details often repeated in Roadster coverage should therefore be treated carefully. A 200-kWh battery, an 8.8-second quarter-mile time, four electric motors, and SpaceX-related thrusters have been discussed in reports or earlier announcements, but they are not all listed as confirmed production specifications on Tesla’s current Roadster page.
How quick could the Roadster be?
Tesla’s 1.9-second 0–60-mph claim would place the Roadster among the quickest production cars ever proposed. The claimed top speed of more than 250 mph also moves it into territory normally associated with limited-production gasoline hypercars.
But there is no independent acceleration test yet. That means there is no verified data for launch consistency, tire choice, battery state of charge, rollout measurement, surface temperature, or repeat performance. The same uncertainty applies to the claimed quarter-mile figure that appears in some reports.

The Roadster’s real-world performance will depend on more than peak motor output. Battery temperature, mass, traction control calibration, cooling capacity, tire development, and aerodynamic stability all become critical when a car is expected to accelerate brutally and remain stable at extreme speed.

Tesla advertises 620 miles of range, but the company has not stated on the current Roadster page whether that figure represents an EPA-rated result, a projected estimate, or another test basis. It should not be compared directly with certified range figures from production EVs until Tesla publishes the relevant testing information.
The battery’s size is also unconfirmed. The frequently cited 200-kWh figure is not a current official Roadster specification. Tesla has not published a final charging rate, charging time, usable battery capacity, or confirmed Supercharger performance.
That leaves an important ownership question unanswered: whether the Roadster’s exceptional range target will come from unusually high energy density, a very large and heavy battery, improved efficiency, or a combination of those factors. A large battery could support long-distance travel but add mass, cost, and thermal-management demands.
Design and photos
Tesla’s official gallery shows the Roadster with a low, wide sports-car profile, a pointed nose, compact cabin, and removable glass roof. The gallery includes red exterior views, an interior image, a top-down view, and images showing the roof stored in the trunk.
The cabin is presented as a four-seat layout, which would give the Roadster more everyday usefulness than the two-seat original. However, Tesla has not published production dimensions or detailed rear-seat measurements. The rear seats may be best understood as a claimed feature rather than proof of adult-friendly space.
Photos on Tesla’s site should be treated as concept or preproduction imagery. They show the design Tesla has presented, not necessarily the final body panels, lighting, interior hardware, software, or safety equipment that a production model would use.

Pricing and reservations
Tesla does not currently provide a confirmed final MSRP for the Roadster. Some third-party coverage, including Car and Driver, estimates a price in the region of $200,000 to $250,000, but that is not a current Tesla price list.
The original $200,000 starting-price claim is an old target, not a guaranteed present-day price. Likewise, the often-repeated $250,000 Founders Series figure should not be treated as confirmed unless Tesla publishes a current configurator or order document establishing it.

The agreement also makes clear that a reservation is not a vehicle purchase or an order. Tesla says reservation holders will later be invited to configure the car and sign an order agreement, followed by a final purchase agreement. Delivery timing is not guaranteed because the vehicle remains under development.
A reservation can be canceled through the customer’s Tesla Account before the motor-vehicle purchase agreement, with the reservation payment refunded according to the agreement’s terms. What is the Tesla Roadster like to drive?
There is no definitive production-car review because no regular-production Roadster has been independently tested. Reviews claiming firm conclusions about ride comfort, steering feel, braking, handling balance, road noise, charging behavior, or highway range are necessarily based on prototypes, static displays, company claims, or speculation.
That is not a criticism of the concept; it is a limit on what can responsibly be judged. A car with a theoretical 1.9-second launch could still have compromises in visibility, ride quality, brake-pedal feel, cabin access, tire cost, or high-speed stability. Those characteristics cannot be established from promotional images.

The biggest potential attraction is the combination of supercar acceleration and a usable electric range target. The biggest risk is execution: bringing those claims together in a reliable, safe, thermally controlled, road-legal car without making it excessively heavy or impractical.

| Original Roadster | Second-generation Roadster | |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Produced from 2008 until January 2012 | Still in development |
| Layout | Two-seat sports car | Advertised as a four-seat electric supercar |
| Platform | Based on the Lotus Elise | Final production platform not confirmed |
| Customer deliveries | Approximately 2,250 delivered through March 31, 2012 | None |
The original Roadster was Tesla’s first production vehicle and helped demonstrate that an electric car could be a serious performance machine. Tesla completed that generation’s production run in January 2012. The new car is intended to be a much faster, longer-range, four-seat halo model, but it should not be considered a direct continuation of an established production line until Tesla actually builds and delivers it.
Common Tesla Roadster misconceptions
- It is a 2020 model. The 2020 date was an earlier production objective. It is not the model year of a delivered Roadster.
- It has a 200-kWh battery. Tesla has not confirmed that specification on its current official page.
- It will definitely do 0–60 mph in 1.9 seconds. That is Tesla’s published target, not an independently verified production result.
- It definitely has four motors. The final drivetrain configuration has not been confirmed in Tesla’s current public specifications.
- It will fly with SpaceX thrusters. Thrusters have been associated with possible demonstrations or special versions in reported development discussions, but they are not listed as a standard production specification by Tesla.
- It is available to buy now. Tesla accepts reservations, but its agreement says a reservation is not an order or purchase and does not guarantee delivery timing.
Verdict
The Tesla Roadster remains one of the most ambitious electric performance-car projects, but it is not yet a finished product that can be reviewed in the normal sense. Tesla’s published targets are spectacular: 1.9 seconds to 60 mph, more than 250 mph, 620 miles of claimed range, four seats, and a removable glass roof.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor now, those figures belong in a specification sheet marked claimed, not in the same category as independently tested production-car results. The sensible buying decision is to reserve only if you are comfortable with an unconfirmed final price, changing specifications, and no guaranteed delivery schedule. Buyers wanting a verified electric performance car today should look elsewhere until Tesla publishes production details and delivers testable vehicles.

Is the Tesla Roadster available to buy?
No. Tesla currently accepts reservations, but the second-generation Roadster has not entered regular production or customer deliveries. A reservation is not an order or purchase, and Tesla does not guarantee a delivery date.
How much will the Tesla Roadster cost?
Tesla has not confirmed a final MSRP. Third-party estimates commonly place it around $200,000 to $250,000, but the old $200,000 starting price and the often-cited $250,000 Founders Series price should not be treated as current official pricing.
What are the Tesla Roadster’s claimed specifications?
Tesla lists a 1.9-second 0–60-mph time, a top speed above 250 mph, 620 miles of range, four seats, and a removable glass roof stored in the trunk. These are manufacturer claims for a vehicle still under development.
