Teslas can retain value relatively well, but resale is not guaranteed—and it varies by model and market. In iSeeCars’ 2026 five-year estimates, the Model 3 retained the largest share of its value among the listed Teslas, at 46.4%; the Model S and Model X were each estimated at about 39%. These are statistical estimates, not offers for a specific car. Whether a Tesla is “worth the investment” depends on what you pay, how long you keep it, and what you can sell it for locally.
How much value do Tesla models retain after five years?
iSeeCars’ 2026 estimates rank Tesla models differently. The percentages below are estimated value retained after five years, based on statistical analysis of depreciation from MSRP; they are not guaranteed resale prices or a valuation for a particular VIN. The analysis is U.S.-market oriented.

These figures provide a comparison among models, not a prediction for every year, trim, or vehicle condition. Your result depends on the actual price you paid, mileage, condition, local demand, and the sale or trade-in route. The figures also measure value retention, not your complete cost of owning the car.

Is a Tesla worth buying as an investment?
A Tesla may retain enough value to help limit depreciation, but the cited figures do not establish that buying one is a financial investment or that you will recover a particular amount. Cars generally lose value, and resale retention is only one part of ownership cost. Purchase price, how long you keep the vehicle, running costs, and eventual selling method all affect the result.
For context, iSeeCars’ 2026 study of more than 950,000 five-year-old used cars sold from March 2025 through February 2026 found average depreciation of 41.8% across vehicles and 57.2% for EVs. It also reported that the Model Y, Model X, and Model S each lost more value than the EV-segment average. This broader result is not a forecast for an individual Tesla, but it underlines why a model’s resale reputation should not be treated as a return guarantee. Why recent used-price increases do not cancel long-term depreciation
Used Tesla prices rose over one recent measurement window, even as the longer-horizon studies show substantial depreciation. iSeeCars compared average listed prices for one- to five-year-old used cars in September 2025 and January 2026: the Tesla average increased from $30,040 to $31,329, a 4.3% rise. Its comparison group of other used EVs fell from $24,629 to $23,738, or 3.6%; Porsche Taycan listings were excluded from “all others.”
Those are two snapshots of asking prices, not completed sales or proceeds a particular owner can expect. A short-term increase in average listings can coexist with significant five-year depreciation because the measures cover different time periods and answer different questions. What the Model 3 resale award does—and does not—say
Kelley Blue Book named the Tesla Model 3 its electric-car category winner in the 2026 Best Resale Value Awards. The projections used 2026 model-year vehicles in KBB’s January/February 2026 Residual Value Guide. This is an independent signal that the Model 3 was considered a strong resale prospect in its category, but it is a projection, not a record of what owners later received when selling.
KBB said its overall top ten were projected to retain around 55% or more of MSRP after five years. That figure applies to the overall list, not specifically to the Model 3, so it should not be substituted for the Model 3’s 46.4% iSeeCars estimate. The two sources use different methods. How to estimate what your Tesla is worth
For the practical question “What is my Tesla worth?”, use a valuation tied to the actual car and local market rather than applying a national retention percentage to its original MSRP.
- Identify the exact car. Record its model year, model, trim, mileage, condition, and relevant equipment. Use the same vehicle details for every estimate.
- Check current local values. Use a vehicle-specific valuation and compare available local trade-in, private-party, and dealer figures. KBB says its Fair Market Range and Fair Purchase Price estimates for used cars draw on actual sales and adjust for local market conditions. See Kelley Blue Book car values.
- Separate asking prices from offers. Listings show what sellers ask; they do not establish the amount a buyer will pay or a dealer will offer. Treat each figure according to what it measures.
- Compare against your real cost and timeline. Start with your actual out-of-pocket purchase price, set a realistic ownership period and expected mileage, and compare the likely selling routes. A five-year MSRP-based estimate cannot by itself calculate your ownership cost.
The available aggregate studies do not quantify how battery condition, mileage, region, trim, accident history, or sale channel changes Tesla resale value. Do not treat any national estimate as a vehicle-specific quote.

Should buyers include a federal clean-vehicle credit?
No federal new or previously-owned clean-vehicle credit is available for a vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025. The IRS says a vehicle acquired by that date may still qualify if it meets the other conditions and is placed in service as required. For a current purchase after the cutoff, do not subtract a former federal credit when comparing the vehicle’s cost. Check the IRS clean-vehicle credit rules.
