Tesla has not removed every Autopilot feature from every vehicle. The narrower change is that, according to reporting published on January 23, 2026, new Model 3 and Model Y orders in North America no longer include Tesla’s former Basic Autopilot bundle as standard. Tesla’s current standard driver-assistance package still includes Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, but the lane-centering function known as Autosteer—and the broader eligible suite of FSD features—now requires Full Self-Driving (Supervised), currently priced at $99 per month in the United States.
That $99 charge is a subscription for supervised driver assistance, not a payment that makes the Tesla autonomous. The driver must remain attentive and ready to take over at all times.
What Tesla actually changed
The change concerns the equipment and software package attached to new Model 3 and Model Y orders in North America. It should not be described as a universal remote removal of Autopilot from Tesla vehicles already on the road.
Older Tesla documentation defined Basic Autopilot as two main functions:

- Traffic-Aware Cruise Control: adjusts the vehicle’s speed to maintain a set following distance from traffic ahead.
- Autosteer: assists with steering to keep the vehicle in its lane while the driver remains responsible for the vehicle.
Under the reported new-order packaging, Traffic-Aware Cruise Control remains part of the standard capability, while Autosteer is no longer included in the former Basic Autopilot bundle. Buyers who want lane-centering and the additional functions available through Tesla’s FSD package must subscribe to FSD (Supervised).
| Feature or package | What the current information indicates |
|---|---|
| Traffic-Aware Cruise Control | Tesla’s current Model 3 owner documentation says it is available on all Tesla vehicles, although operation remains subject to vehicle, software, road, and other conditions. |
| Autosteer | The lane-centering assistance previously included in Basic Autopilot is not included as standard on the affected new North American Model 3 and Model Y orders, according to the January 2026 reporting. |
| FSD (Supervised) | A subscription-only package in the current U.S. support information. It can be added during a new-vehicle order or through the Tesla app or vehicle touchscreen, if the vehicle and market are eligible. |
| Full autonomy | Not what the subscription provides. Tesla describes FSD as supervised, and NHTSA describes the system as SAE Level 2 partial automation. |
The practical consequence for a new buyer is straightforward: adaptive cruise control remains available, but lane-centering assistance is now being used as a reason to buy into Tesla’s recurring FSD subscription.
Adaptive cruise control is not lane keeping
The distinction matters because “cruise control” and “Autopilot” are often used loosely.
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control primarily manages speed and following distance. It can slow the car when traffic ahead is moving more slowly and can accelerate toward the selected speed when conditions allow. It does not, by itself, provide the lane-centering function associated with Autosteer.
Autosteer is the steering-assistance component. When available and engaged under its permitted conditions, it helps keep the vehicle within a lane. It still requires an attentive driver, and availability can depend on the model, model year, hardware, software version, configuration, and market.
For that reason, a buyer who wants only highway speed and following-distance assistance may not view the packaging change as significant. A buyer who specifically expects the car to help center itself in a marked lane will see a meaningful difference between the standard package and the $99 subscription.
How much does FSD (Supervised) cost?
Tesla’s current U.S. support information lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month. At that rate, the recurring cost is:

| Subscription period | Cost before taxes or price changes |
|---|---|
| One month | $99 |
| 12 months | $1,188 |
| 24 months | $2,376 |
| 36 months | $3,564 |
The $99 is a software subscription rather than a physical vehicle upgrade. Tesla says the subscription can be canceled at any time. Access continues through the current billing period, but subscription refunds are unavailable under the stated terms.

Tesla’s current U.S. support page also says that outright purchase is unavailable. Some older reports mention a temporary $8,000 purchase option offered before February 14, 2026; that was a historical offer and should not be used as the current price or as the basis for a present-day break-even calculation.
What the change means for someone ordering a Tesla
If you are satisfied with adaptive cruise control
The standard package may be sufficient if your priority is maintaining speed and following distance on suitable roads. You would not pay the additional $99 each month simply to have Traffic-Aware Cruise Control.
If lane-centering is essential
You should treat FSD (Supervised) as a recurring ownership expense, not as a one-time feature included with the car. A three-year owner who keeps the subscription continuously would spend $3,564 before taxes or future price changes.
That does not mean the subscription is automatically poor value. Its value depends on how often you use the eligible functions, how long you keep the vehicle, and whether you prefer a cancelable monthly commitment. But the cost should be included in the vehicle budget before placing an order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you are comparing Tesla with another automaker
Do not compare the word “Autopilot” with another manufacturer’s driver-assistance label. Compare the exact standard and optional equipment for the specific model, trim, market, and model year. Some vehicles include lane-centering assistance in a standard or bundled package, while others place it behind an option or subscription. That comparison requires current manufacturer equipment lists and, ideally, a careful review of how the system operates.
Before completing a Tesla order, check the current order summary, the local Tesla site, and the vehicle’s stated feature eligibility. Tesla’s documentation warns that driver-assistance availability can vary by region, configuration, hardware, and software version.

What existing Tesla owners should know
The available evidence supports a new-order packaging change, not a blanket claim that Tesla remotely removed Autosteer from every older Model 3 or Model Y.
Existing vehicles can have different hardware, software, purchased options, and regional entitlements. Tesla’s current documentation says the availability of Autosteer and other self-driving functions varies by those factors. An owner should therefore check the individual vehicle’s touchscreen or Tesla app rather than infer eligibility from a news headline.

Does Tesla still call this Autopilot?
The terminology is part of a broader regulatory and marketing context.
On December 16, 2025, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced that it had found Tesla violated California law by misleadingly using the terms “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving Capability” in marketing materials. The agency said Tesla vehicles could not and cannot operate as autonomous vehicles. It also noted Tesla’s shift toward the term Full Self-Driving (Supervised), which emphasizes that a driver must supervise the system.

It does not, by itself, establish that the January 2026 subscription change was legally required or caused by the California DMV action. Those are separate developments unless Tesla or a regulator establishes a direct connection.
What the safety record does—and does not—show
FSD (Supervised) must not be treated as a hands-off or autonomous driving service. Tesla’s support materials say the system is not fully autonomous and that the driver must stay attentive and ready to act. Tesla’s Model 3 manual similarly says the self-driving features do not replace the driver.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened preliminary evaluation PE25012 on October 7, 2025 regarding alleged traffic-law violations while Tesla FSD was engaged. NHTSA described FSD as SAE Level 2 partial automation requiring a fully attentive driver. The allegations included red-light violations, travel into opposing lanes or the wrong direction, and incorrect lane selection.
That evaluation is evidence of regulatory scrutiny and reported concerns. It is not a final finding that every FSD deployment is defective or unlawful.
NHTSA separately closed a preliminary evaluation concerning unexpected braking on June 29, 2026. The agency reported that incidents declined from 45 in 2024 to 19 in 2025 and three through the beginning of 2026. However, NHTSA explicitly said the closure was not a finding that no safety-related defect exists.
For consumers, the balanced conclusion is that Tesla’s driver-assistance systems have faced documented complaints and regulatory investigations, while the closure of an individual investigation does not certify the technology as risk-free. Regardless of whether the subscription is active, the driver remains responsible for monitoring the road and taking control.

The strongest evidence for the package change concerns North American orders. The official $99 price is the current U.S. figure. Neither should automatically be extended to Europe, Asia, or other regions.
Local laws, Tesla’s regional product pages, vehicle hardware, software releases, and configuration can all affect the features offered. A Model 3 or Model Y ordered in another market may have a different standard package, a different subscription price, or different restrictions.
The same caution applies to used vehicles. The model name alone does not establish whether a particular car has Autosteer, FSD eligibility, or an active entitlement. Buyers should verify the individual vehicle’s feature menu and documentation before treating any driver-assistance function as included.

A practical buying checklist
- Identify the exact market. Confirm whether the vehicle is being ordered in the United States, Canada, or another region.
- Read the current order summary. Look for the actual driver-assistance features included with the specific Model 3 or Model Y configuration.
- Separate TACC from Autosteer. Do not assume that adaptive cruise control includes lane centering.
- Price the subscription over your ownership period. At $99 per month, multiply by the number of months you realistically expect to keep it active.
- Verify eligibility. Hardware, model year, software, configuration, and location can affect whether FSD (Supervised) can be added.
- Read the limitations. The system is supervised Level 2 driver assistance, not autonomous transportation.
- Recheck before publication or purchase. Tesla says terms and pricing can change, so an older review or order screenshot may no longer be current.
The bottom line for buyers
Tesla’s move is best understood as a change in what comes standard, not the death of every Autopilot feature. New North American Model 3 and Model Y buyers still receive Traffic-Aware Cruise Control according to Tesla’s current documentation, but the lane-centering capability associated with Basic Autopilot is being placed behind the $99-per-month FSD (Supervised) subscription.
That makes the decision partly financial and partly practical. If adaptive cruise control is enough, the new package may not materially affect your use. If lane-centering is a must-have, budget $1,188 per year in the U.S. and compare Tesla’s subscription model with the exact driver-assistance equipment offered by competing vehicles. In every case, FSD (Supervised) remains a driver-assistance system that requires an attentive human driver.
Scope note: This article reflects the research available August 12, 2026. Tesla pricing, feature availability, and regional packaging should be verified again if the information is held for later publication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do new Teslas still have cruise control?
Yes. Tesla’s current Model 3 owner documentation says Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is available on all Tesla vehicles, although exact operation depends on the vehicle, software, road, and other conditions. Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is not the same as lane-centering Autosteer.
Does the $99 FSD subscription make a Tesla autonomous?
No. Tesla calls the package Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and its support materials require the driver to remain attentive and ready to take over. NHTSA describes the system as SAE Level 2 partial automation, not an autonomous vehicle.
Did Tesla remove Autosteer from existing Model 3 and Model Y vehicles?
The evidence establishes a packaging change for new North American orders, not a universal remote removal from legacy vehicles. Existing feature availability varies by vehicle, hardware, software, configuration, and region.
Can FSD (Supervised) still be purchased outright?
Tesla’s current U.S. support information says outright purchase is unavailable and describes FSD (Supervised) as subscription-only. Older reports of an $8,000 purchase option refer to a temporary historical offer, not the current U.S. arrangement.
Is the $99 monthly price valid everywhere?
The $99 figure is the current U.S. price identified in Tesla’s official support information. The North American order change and pricing should not automatically be extrapolated to Canada or other countries, where local pricing and feature availability may differ.
Can the FSD subscription be canceled?
Tesla says subscribers can cancel at any time, with access continuing through the current billing period. Tesla’s stated terms also say subscription refunds are unavailable.
The Bottom Line
Tesla did not eliminate all Autopilot features. For new Model 3 and Model Y orders in North America, the former Basic Autopilot bundle is no longer standard: Traffic-Aware Cruise Control remains, while lane-centering Autosteer and the broader FSD (Supervised) package require a current U.S. subscription of $99 per month. The system remains supervised Level 2 driver assistance, not autonomous driving.
