Tesla’s March 2025 recall covers 46,096 model-year 2024–2025 Cybertrucks after the company found that a stainless-steel cant-rail panel could separate from its adhesive joint and become a road hazard. Tesla estimated that 1% of the recalled vehicles had the defect; that is an estimate, not a count of confirmed failures. Tesla offered owners a no-charge replacement assembly.
Which Cybertrucks are affected?
Tesla’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report 25V-170, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on March 18, 2025, covers 46,096 model-year 2024–2025 Cybertrucks built from November 13, 2023, through February 27, 2025. The scope is based on the affected cant-rail assembly, not a count of vehicles confirmed to have a loose or detached panel. Tesla estimated that 1% of the recall population had the defect.
This is the March 2025 cant-rail campaign, not the separate June 2024 sail applique recall. Tesla’s filing said it did not separately disclose how many vehicles had actually experienced the condition; it listed 151 warranty claims that might be related as of March 14, 2025.
What is the defect, and can the trim fall off?
The cant rail is an exterior trim assembly: an electrocoated steel stamping is joined to a stainless-steel panel with structural adhesive, then fastened to the vehicle. In affected trucks, the stainless panel may delaminate at the adhesive joint and separate. Tesla said a detached panel could create a road hazard for following motorists, increasing the risk of injury or collision.

Possible warning signs include unusual cabin noise or trim that looks loose or is visibly separating. Tesla’s filing said it knew of no related collisions, fatalities, or injuries as of March 14, 2025. That is a dated statement from the company, not evidence about incidents after that date.
How is Tesla fixing the cant rail?
Tesla said it would replace the cant-rail assembly at no charge with a revised part intended to meet durability requirements. The updated design uses a different structural adhesive, which Tesla said was not prone to environmental embrittlement, and adds a stud welded to the stainless panel. A nut clamps the panel to the vehicle structure, providing mechanical reinforcement in addition to the adhesive bond.

Tesla’s filing planned owner notification for May 19, 2025; that date is historical. Owners should check the current recall status for their vehicle by VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and contact Tesla to arrange the manufacturer’s remedy. Do not substitute generic adhesive, a trim kit, or a DIY panel repair for the recall repair.
Why did the recall cover so many trucks?
The recall population is the number of vehicles Tesla identified as potentially involved, not the number with confirmed failures. Tesla’s 1% estimate applies to that population; it should not be read as a verified defect count. The difference matters: a recall can cover vehicles sharing a potentially affected component even when only a portion is estimated to exhibit the problem.

At the time, the 46,096-vehicle campaign was described as Tesla’s largest Cybertruck recall to date and the eighth since customer deliveries began. Those labels reflect reporting in March 2025, not a permanent ranking. Associated coverage also noted earlier recalls involving an inverter, accelerator pedal, windshield wipers, and display screen.

Reuters reported that Tesla shares ended marginally higher on the day the recall was announced. That one-day move does not establish the recall’s independent effect on the share price. The announcement came during a broader period of investor and brand concern: Reuters said Tesla shares had lost about half their value during 2025 amid competition, an aging lineup, and backlash related to CEO Elon Musk’s government role. The recall should not be treated as the cause of that wider decline.

The recall nevertheless put renewed attention on build quality. Sam Fiorani, vice president at AutoForecast Solutions, told Reuters: “Recalls of the entire production for a physical item such as body panels focus attention on quality issues that Tesla has avoided for many years. Reputations take a long time to build and can be tarnished very quickly.” Ars Technica reported that Wedbush analyst Dan Ives called the moment a “brand tornado crisis moment” and wrote that how Musk handled the following months would be pivotal to Tesla’s long-term growth trajectory, in his view.
