Tesla’s official quarterly operating metric is vehicle deliveries, rather than a separately reported global retail-sales total. So the most precise version of the headline is: Tesla deliveries fell 13.5% year over year in Q2 2025.

Rounded to one decimal place, the result is 13.5%. Tesla’s own Q2 2025 shareholder update rounded the year-over-year change to -13% in its comparison table.

Tesla reported deliveries, not a conventional sales total
Tesla’s July 2, 2025 production-and-deliveries release reported both vehicles produced and vehicles delivered during the quarter. In automotive reporting, deliveries are the closest company-reported measure to quarterly vehicle volume, but they are not identical to every possible definition of “sales.” Deliveries can reflect the timing of handoffs, leasing arrangements, regional reporting practices and other factors.
That distinction matters because Tesla’s own release cautioned that vehicle deliveries and energy-storage deployments are only two measures of financial performance and should not be treated as complete indicators of quarterly financial results. A delivery count is useful, but it does not by itself reveal profitability, cash generation, pricing or demand across every market.
Model 3 and Model Y held up better than Tesla’s other vehicles
The decline was not evenly distributed across Tesla’s lineup. Deliveries of the company’s high-volume Model 3/Y group fell 11.52%, from 422,405 in Q2 2024 to 373,728 in Q2 2025.
Deliveries of Tesla’s other models fell much more sharply, from 21,551 to 10,394—a decline of 51.77%. The Model 3/Y group accounted for 373,728 of Tesla’s 384,122 total Q2 deliveries, or roughly 97% of the quarter’s volume.

This breakdown shows why the headline percentage should not be interpreted as an identical decline in every Tesla model. The company’s largest volume category declined less than the total, while the smaller “other models” category contracted by more than half.
Production was almost flat while deliveries fell
Tesla produced 410,244 vehicles in Q2 2025, compared with 410,831 in Q2 2024. That is a year-over-year production decline of only 0.14%, effectively flat compared with the 13.48% delivery decline.
The gap between production and deliveries was therefore much wider in Q2 2025. Tesla produced 26,122 more vehicles than it delivered during the quarter. In Q2 2024, it delivered 33,125 more vehicles than it produced.
Those figures can be relevant to inventory and delivery timing, but they do not prove a single explanation for the result. Production and deliveries are measured over a quarter, and vehicles can be in transit, awaiting handover or affected by regional timing. The data supports saying that production was broadly stable while reported deliveries fell; it does not, by itself, establish the precise reason for the gap.

Automotive revenue fell even more than deliveries
Tesla reported $15.787 billion in automotive sales revenue for Q2 2025, down from $18.530 billion in Q2 2024. The approximately 14.8% decline was slightly larger than the 13.5% drop in deliveries.
Revenue and deliveries should be kept separate. Automotive revenue can change because of vehicle pricing, product mix, leasing, incentives, foreign-exchange movements and the timing of recognition—not just because of the number of vehicles handed to customers. The revenue decline is corroborating evidence of weaker automotive results, but it is not a substitute for the delivery calculation.
Tesla’s total company revenue declined from $25.500 billion to $22.496 billion, or approximately 11.8%. That company-wide figure includes more than vehicle sales. Tesla said its year-over-year revenue pressure reflected lower vehicle deliveries, lower regulatory-credit revenue, a lower vehicle average selling price excluding foreign-exchange effects because of mix, and lower energy-generation-and-storage revenue due to a lower average selling price. Services and other revenue increased.
What Tesla’s Q2 materials do—and do not—show about the cause
The operating release and shareholder update establish the size and composition of the decline. They do not establish one definitive cause.

Product-refresh timing, competition, pricing, regional demand, the age of parts of the lineup and political backlash may all appear in broader coverage or analysis, but none should be presented as proven by Tesla’s delivery table alone. The defensible primary-source conclusion is narrower: Tesla delivered fewer vehicles, its Model 3/Y volume declined, its other-model volume declined much more sharply, and automotive revenue fell faster than deliveries.
Tesla also highlighted a Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive Model Y launched in May 2025, with a stated 357-mile range and a starting price below $45,000 before incentives. Those were Tesla’s historical Q2 2025 claims. They should not be treated as current pricing, specifications or availability without checking the latest local Tesla listings, because vehicle configurations and prices can change by market and date.

For buyers, the Q2 delivery decline is a market signal, not a direct verdict on whether a particular Tesla is a good purchase. A prospective buyer should evaluate the current model’s price, incentives, range, charging access, warranty, insurance and resale outlook rather than assume that a quarterly delivery number determines vehicle value.
Existing and prospective Tesla owners should also separate the sales story from practical ownership requirements. Home charging may require electrical planning, installation and compatible equipment; Tesla’s official Wall Connector documentation is the relevant starting point for understanding the company’s home-charging product and installation context. Accessories such as floor mats or charging-cable organizers are ownership decisions, not explanations for Tesla’s Q2 sales decline, and compatibility should be checked against the exact model year and vehicle configuration.
