The Tesla Model Y Standard is no longer awaiting a release date: Tesla launched it in the U.S. on October 7, 2025. The September 2025 firmware leak pointed to a lower-cost Model Y with equipment reductions, but those clues were not a confirmed production specification. Tesla’s current U.S. page lists the Standard RWD at 321 miles of EPA-estimated range, with a 15.4-inch center touchscreen.
What was leaked about the Tesla Model Y Standard?
On September 23, 2025, TechRadar reported that Tesla firmware examined by the researcher known as @greentheonly contained labels that might point to a less expensive Model Y configuration. The report discussed two audio-system labels and the apparent absence of a rear-seat display as possible signs of equipment cuts. TechRadar cautioned that the firmware evidence was open to interpretation; it did not establish the final production equipment list. Read the September 2025 TechRadar report.
When did the Model Y Standard come out?
Tesla launched sales of the Model Y Standard on October 7, 2025, in the United States. The release date is historical, not pending. The Associated Press launch report described the new version as a cheaper Model Y with less equipment than more expensive versions. Tesla Investor Relations later published a document titled “Model 3 & Model Y Standard – The Tesla Lineup Is Now More Affordable.” Associated Press launch report; Tesla Investor Relations document.
How much did the Model Y Standard cost?
The Associated Press reported a U.S. launch price just under $40,000 in October 2025. That is launch-era reporting, not a verified current price. The available sources do not establish today’s price across markets, so check Tesla’s regional configurator for current pricing and availability before comparing offers.

What does the Model Y Standard leave out?
The AP’s October 2025 launch coverage said the Standard had fewer audio speakers, a fabric interior, no panoramic glass roof, and no second-row touchscreen compared with more equipped Model Y versions. These are launch-era reported differences; equipment and configurations can vary by date and market. The earlier firmware report had treated audio labels and the missing rear-seat display as clues, rather than confirmed specifications.
What are the current U.S. Model Y Standard RWD specifications?
Tesla’s U.S. Model Y page currently labels the trim “Model Y Standard RWD Specifications.” It lists:

Why the trim name needs a date and market
Tesla’s current U.S. page uses “Standard RWD,” while Car and Driver reported in June 2026 that Tesla had renamed the Standard trim simply “Model Y.” That later naming change makes dated labels important: a trim name, feature set, and price can differ between markets or change over time. How to check a Model Y listing against the right version
When comparing a listing with Tesla’s current configuration, match the market and date first. Then compare the stated price and the specific equipment—especially drive configuration, range, acceleration, displays, audio, roof, and cargo capacity. The available reports establish some Standard-versus-better-equipped differences, but not a complete current, trim-by-trim price and equipment comparison.
