There isn’t enough comparable evidence here to rank every Tesla Model S model year from best to worst. Consumer Reports’ surfaced results specifically flag the 2016 and 2019 Model S as less reliable than other cars from their respective model years. That makes them caution flags, not proof that every other year is more reliable—or that every car from either year is troublesome.
For a used Model S, use year-level ratings as a starting point. Check open recalls by VIN, verify the particular car’s battery-warranty status, and assess its condition and service records.

What the available evidence says about Model S reliability by year
Consumer Reports describes its reliability history as based on its latest subscriber survey, covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots. These include electric motors, EV charging, brakes, power equipment and electrical accessories. That figure describes the overall survey program, not the number of Model S owners surveyed, and the surfaced pages do not provide comparable scores for every Model S year.

The recall counts are the figures attributed to NHTSA in Consumer Reports’ year-specific search snippets, accessed in 2026. They are not reliability scores, and this selection of years is not a complete comparison of the Model S lineup. Sources: Consumer Reports: 2012 Model S, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2022.
The two reported caution flags
Consumer Reports explicitly describes the 2016 and 2019 Model S as less reliable than other cars from their respective model years. This is a relative, survey-based comparison with same-year vehicles—not a statement that every Model S from those years will have problems, nor a direct comparison between the two Model S years. The surfaced snippets do not include the underlying scores, detailed trouble categories or model-year sample sizes.

Why this is not a complete ranking
A defensible best-to-worst list would require comparable reliability measures for all the years being ranked, drawn from a consistent source and interpreted using its survey method. Isolated year snippets cannot establish which unflagged years outperform one another. Nor should recall totals be used as a substitute: they do not measure owner-reported reliability and are not adjusted here for fleet size or time on the road.
How to assess a used Model S beyond its model year
A reliability rating describes patterns among surveyed vehicles; it cannot establish the condition of the specific car you are considering. Compare the same source’s year-level measures and reported trouble categories where available, then check the vehicle itself.

- Review condition and service records. Look for documentation of repairs and maintenance, and arrange an inspection by a mechanic qualified to assess electric vehicles.
- Check the exact vehicle for open recalls. Recall status is VIN-specific; a year-level total cannot tell you whether a particular car still needs a remedy.
- Confirm battery-warranty applicability. Coverage depends on the vehicle’s actual configuration and history, as well as the terms applicable to that car.
Check open recalls using the car’s VIN
NHTSA lets consumers search for recalls by VIN, license plate, or vehicle year, make and model. Its VIN lookup shows unrepaired recalls; NHTSA says recalls do not expire. Use the VIN search for the car you may buy, since a model-year count does not identify which recalls remain open on that vehicle. Start at NHTSA’s recall lookup and recall information.
Tesla’s surfaced support result refers to a seat-belt reminder software recall affecting certain 2012–2024 Model S vehicles. That broad year range is not a diagnosis for an individual car: applicability and remedy status may depend on the vehicle. Check the VIN through NHTSA or Tesla’s current recall tool rather than assuming the car is affected or repaired. Tesla seat-belt reminder recall information.

Verify battery warranty on the specific car
An older North American Tesla Model S warranty document describes eight years of battery coverage, with mileage limits that vary by battery configuration. It also says gradual loss of battery energy or power through time and use is excluded, and describes repair or replacement with a reconditioned battery meeting the document’s capacity condition. These are terms in that older document, not universal current coverage for every Model S.
Before relying on a warranty to offset ownership risk, verify the car’s configuration, delivery date, mileage, region and current coverage using its records and applicable warranty terms. Tesla Model S warranty document.
