The current Tesla Model 3 Performance combines dual-motor all-wheel drive, a Tesla-rated 0–60 mph time of 2.9 seconds and a 309-mile EPA-estimated range. Tesla lists a $56,630 starting price before taxes and other fees. Over five years, however, the purchase price is only part of the bill: depreciation, financing, insurance, electricity, tires, maintenance, repairs and local taxes can change the result substantially.

How fast is the Tesla Model 3 Performance?
Tesla rates the Model 3 Performance at 2.9 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. That is a manufacturer claim for the specified configuration, not a guarantee for every road, temperature, battery state or tire condition. Dual-motor all-wheel drive provides the traction system behind the launch performance, while the 20-inch wheel and performance-tire package also affects grip, ride and replacement cost.
For a meaningful comparison with another EV or sport sedan, keep model year, trim, wheel size, tire type, launch procedure and geography consistent. A quoted acceleration time alone does not describe braking, cornering, winter traction or the cost of keeping the car on its original tires.

What range can you expect?
Use 309 miles as a comparison number
The 309-mile figure is the EPA estimate and is the appropriate standardized number for comparing vehicles. It is not a guaranteed trip distance. Cold weather, high speed, elevation gain, heating or air-conditioning, payload, battery temperature and traffic can all reduce usable miles. A trip that starts at 100 percent and ends at the car’s low-battery warning will not normally deliver the full laboratory estimate as comfortable route mileage.
Plan conservatively for road trips
Check the route, weather and elevation before leaving, and keep a charging margin rather than planning to arrive at zero. Tesla specifically says actual range and charging performance vary with Supercharger type, vehicle configuration, state of charge, battery temperature, speed, weather and elevation change.
Charging speed and charging cost
Public Supercharging
Tesla lists a 250-kW maximum Supercharging rate and says the car can add up to 162 miles in 15 minutes. That miles-added number is based on constant-speed test data. It should not be treated as a promise that every 15-minute stop adds 162 road miles: charging tapers as the battery fills, and the result depends on the factors Tesla identifies above. Supercharging is pay-per-use, with the price varying by location and time.

Home charging math
Your home cost is determined by the electricity actually used, your utility tariff and any charging-equipment or installation expense. The basic calculation is:
Charging cost = kilowatt-hours purchased × your price per kWh.
For a trip estimate, use the car’s measured energy consumption for your driving conditions:

AAA’s 2026 Your Driving Costs study used 18.0 cents per kWh as an average home-EV electricity price during its study period. That is a benchmark, not a universal rate; substitute your utility’s time-of-use, flat, solar-export or other applicable tariff. Public charging, demand charges and installation are separate from the electricity-only calculation.
Warranty and routine maintenance
Coverage Tesla lists
| Coverage | Term |
|---|---|
| Basic vehicle warranty | 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first |
| Battery and drive unit | 8 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first |
What still needs service
Electric motors remove engine oil changes and many gasoline-engine services, so scheduled maintenance is generally lighter than on a gasoline car. They do not eliminate consumables or wear items. Budget for tires, tire rotations, cabin filters, wipers, brakes, suspension components, collision repairs and any service required after damage or faults.

Tesla’s service guidance calls for tire rotation every 6,250 miles (10,000 km), or when the tread-depth difference reaches 2/32 inch or more. Alignment, seasonal temperature changes, driving style and wheel damage can alter that interval in practice.
Tesla Model 3 Performance 20-inch replacement tires
The Performance’s 20-inch Warp Wheels make tires one of the most important recurring ownership costs. Replacement pricing is not a single national number: it depends on the exact approved size, load index, speed rating, season, treadwear design, brand, labor and whether an alignment or wheel repair is needed.
- Read the size and load/speed requirements on the vehicle placard and in the owner’s documentation.
- Choose summer, all-season or winter specification for your climate rather than assuming the original tire is suitable year-round.
- Replace tires as a matched axle set when appropriate and have a professional check balance and alignment.
- Verify that a replacement tire’s load and speed ratings meet the car’s requirements; a cheaper tire with the wrong specification is not an equivalent comparison.
Five-year ownership cost: an evidence-based scenario
Edmunds’ modeled 2026 Model 3 Performance scenario totals $67,792 over five years. It is an analytical scenario with Edmunds’ assumptions, not a quote or a universal owner bill.

| Category | Five-year amount in Edmunds’ model |
|---|---|
| Depreciation | $35,703 |
| Financing | $12,252 |
| Insurance | $5,678 |
| Fuel/energy | $4,551 |
| Maintenance | $3,054 |
| Repairs | $2,007 |
| Taxes and fees | $4,547 |
| Total | $67,792 |
Depreciation is the largest line in that model, followed by financing. Your result can move sharply with annual mileage, loan rate and term, insurance territory and driver profile, electricity price, tire choices, repair history, registration taxes and the car’s resale value.
How the price compares with the Model 3 lineup
Consumer Reports lists a 2026 Model 3 lineup base-MSRP range of $36,990 to $54,990, plus a $1,390 destination charge. Tesla’s Performance page lists $56,630 for the Performance configuration before taxes and other fees. These figures come from different listings and should not be treated as an apples-to-apples transaction quote; destination charges, incentives and Tesla pricing can change by date and market.
How to decide whether it fits your budget
- Set the purchase baseline: use the current Performance price, then add destination, sales tax, registration, financing costs and any options.
- Measure your driving: estimate annual miles and separate home charging from public charging.
- Get an insurance quote: use the exact vehicle identification, location, driver profile and coverage limits; a generic EV average is not reliable for this trim.
- Price the tires: obtain quotes for the required 20-inch specification, including mounting, balancing and alignment.
- Model resale risk: test more than one depreciation assumption instead of relying on the Edmunds scenario alone.
- Stress-test winter use: include reduced range, seasonal tires where needed and additional charging stops.
Bottom line
The Model 3 Performance is exceptionally quick on paper and offers a 309-mile EPA estimate, but ownership economics depend less on acceleration than on depreciation, financing, insurance, electricity and 20-inch tire costs. Treat Tesla’s range and charging numbers as standardized or test-condition references, and replace Edmunds’ five-year scenario with your own local prices and mileage before deciding.
