The allegations have not been established as fact: reporting does not establish whether Autopilot was engaged, what technically caused the crash, or who is legally liable.
What happened in the Idaho crash
The Independent reported that Jennifer Blaine, 46, was driving a 2022 Tesla Model X east on Idaho State Highway 33 on the evening of September 1, 2023. Her daughters, Denali, 11, and Emily, 22, and Emily’s husband, Zachary Leavitt, 24, were passengers. According to the complaint as described by the newspaper, the Model X abruptly crossed into the westbound lane while following a gentle southward curve and struck an oncoming 2007 Kenworth semi-truck carrying grain. The report says all four people and the family dog, Peaches, died at the scene. The Independent’s account attributes the account of the vehicle’s movement to the complaint.
What the family’s complaint alleges
Nathan Blaine, Jennifer’s husband, filed the wrongful-death complaint against Tesla and Elon Musk. As reported by The Independent and Electrek, the complaint alleges that Tesla’s statements about vehicle safety and driver-assistance capabilities gave the family a “false sense of security.” Those are claims by the plaintiff, not findings by a court or an independent technical investigation.
Alleged failure of lane-related features
The complaint alleges that Autosteer, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Centering Assistance, and Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance did not keep the Model X in its lane or warn Jennifer. It also alleges that the car failed to provide escalating warnings. The complaint’s theory is that deficiencies in these features contributed to the vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic; the sources reviewed do not independently verify that account or establish technical causation.

Claims about Full Self-Driving and driver monitoring
The Independent reports that the family purchased Tesla’s Full Self-Driving package. The complaint, as summarized by the paper, says the family was told the car could guide itself from a highway on-ramp to an off-ramp, change lanes, and navigate interchanges. These are descriptions of what the complaint says the family was led to expect, not a neutral or independently verified description of system capability.
The complaint also contrasts Tesla’s driver monitoring with infrared eye-tracking systems it says other manufacturers use. That comparison is part of the family’s argument; the reporting does not provide an independent evaluation of Tesla’s monitoring or competing systems.

Was Autopilot engaged?
The reporting does not establish whether Autopilot was engaged when the crash occurred. The Independent says the complaint argues that lane-related safety features should operate whether or not Autopilot is active. The newspaper also quotes family attorney Lynn Shumway as saying he did not believe Autopilot was on. That statement is the lawyer’s view, not an official finding.
The terms should not be treated as interchangeable: Autosteer is a specific driver-assistance feature, Autopilot is a separate system name, and Full Self-Driving is the package the family reportedly purchased. The available reporting does not identify which features, if any, were active at the time.

What is—and is not—established
- Reported: The crash occurred on Idaho State Highway 33 on September 1, 2023, and involved a 2022 Tesla Model X and a Kenworth semi-truck. The reporting says four people and a dog died.
- Alleged: The complaint says Tesla and Musk misrepresented safety and driver-assistance capabilities, and that lane-related features failed to prevent or warn of the Model X leaving its lane.
- Unresolved in the reviewed reporting: Whether Autopilot was engaged, the technical cause of the crash, and whether Tesla or Musk bears legal responsibility. The articles do not report a final liability determination or an official crash investigation establishing cause.
The Independent’s January 1, 2026 report and Electrek’s January 6, 2026 report summarize the complaint and crash, but neither is a substitute for the court docket, an official crash report, or an engineering investigation. Electrek’s report also includes commentary that should not be mistaken for an official finding.
