A Tesla Model 3 was reportedly struck by a train in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, in June 2025 after entering railroad tracks and becoming stuck. The driver reportedly said the car was in “self-driving mode,” but available reporting does not establish that Tesla’s software caused the car to enter the tracks or the collision.
What happened in Sinking Spring
Electrek reported on June 16, 2025, that a Tesla Model 3 went around a railroad crossing barrier near South Hull Street and Columbia Avenue and became stuck on the tracks. The driver and occupants reportedly got out before a train hit the car. Emergency responders stopped train traffic, and the vehicle was removed by crane. The account says the collision reportedly snapped off a side mirror. Electrek’s report drew on local fire alerts and reporting; it is not an official crash-investigation record.
Did self-driving mode cause the crash?
That has not been established. The “self-driving mode” description is attributed to the driver’s report. The available sources do not provide vehicle telemetry, a Tesla response, a police reconstruction, or a regulator’s causal determination for this incident. The report supports saying the driver described the mode as engaged—not that the software initiated the maneuver or caused the collision.
What “self-driving” means in this context
Tesla currently calls the feature Full Self-Driving (Supervised), but the phrase used in the Pennsylvania report is not itself proof that the car was operating autonomously. In a separate investigation concerning a 2026 crash in Katy, Texas, the National Transportation Safety Board described FSD (Supervised) as an SAE Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system. The NTSB says Level 2 systems can assist with steering and acceleration or braking while the driver remains fully responsible. That agency description provides context about the system category; it does not establish what happened in Pennsylvania. NTSB: Passenger Vehicle Collision with Residence

What the later railroad-crossing scrutiny shows
On September 29, 2025, Senators Edward J. Markey and Richard Blumenthal sent NHTSA a letter asking the agency to investigate reports of Tesla FSD failures at railroad crossings. The letter reflects the senators’ concerns and request, and refers to media reporting. It is not an NHTSA finding that FSD caused the Sinking Spring collision. Read the senators’ letter.

- Reported incident details: Electrek’s account says the Model 3 entered the tracks, became stuck, and was struck after the occupants exited.
- Driver’s reported description: The driver reportedly said “self-driving mode” was engaged. That is an attributed account, not a verified system-status record.
- Official causal finding: The sources reviewed do not provide one for this Pennsylvania collision.
- Broader safety concerns: The senators’ letter is a request for investigation, not an agency conclusion about this specific crash.
Tesla also says its safety report does not assign fault in its collision reporting because fault depends on investigating the circumstances, driver intent, and applicable traffic laws. Its collision-rate comparisons reflect Tesla’s own definitions and methods; they do not determine responsibility in this incident. Tesla Vehicle Safety Report
