It is a Level 2 driver-assistance system: the Tesla can steer, accelerate, brake, change lanes, and follow a route, but the person in the driver’s seat remains responsible for the drive and must be ready to take over.
That distinction matters more than Tesla’s name for the package. FSD can make ordinary trips less tiring, but it can also make an unexpected move at an intersection, around road debris, or in a construction zone. At $99 per month in the U.S. as of August 9, 2026, it is best viewed as a convenience subscription—not a replacement for an alert driver.

What Tesla FSD does
FSD (Supervised) is Tesla’s broadest driver-assistance package. When available for the vehicle and location, it can perform more than basic highway lane keeping or adaptive cruise control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Capability | What the car can do |
|---|---|
| Route following | Follow a navigation route on city, suburban, and residential streets |
| Intersections | Stop at and proceed through traffic lights and stop signs |
| Turns | Make left and right turns, including some unprotected turns |
| Lane changes | Change lanes and select highway exits or forks |
| Road transitions | Enter and exit highways and navigate some roundabouts |
| Parking | Automatically parallel- or perpendicular-park with Autopark |
| Summon | Use Dumb Summon or Actually Smart Summon where the vehicle and region support them |
The precise feature set depends on the Tesla’s model year, camera and computer hardware, software version, country, and regulatory approval. A vehicle having an FSD entitlement does not guarantee that every function is active everywhere.

What FSD is not
FSD is not an autonomous chauffeur. You cannot sleep, use your phone instead of watching the road, sit in the back seat, or assume the system will obey every traffic rule correctly. Tesla describes the driver as fully responsible for the vehicle, and NHTSA classifies the system as SAE Level 2 partial automation.
The car may select a route and control steering and speed, but it does not transfer responsibility to Tesla. Keep your attention on the road, keep your hands available, and intervene whenever the situation looks wrong. Tesla’s own manual warns that the vehicle can make sudden or unexpected maneuvers.
You may still see the older phrase FSD Beta in older articles and regulatory documents. Tesla’s current customer-facing name is Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
How Tesla FSD works
Tesla says FSD uses the vehicle’s external cameras and onboard neural-network processing. The cameras collect visual information; neural networks interpret that information and estimate the road, traffic signals, lane markings, pedestrians, vehicles, and other objects.
Tesla’s AI description refers to per-camera networks that perform tasks such as semantic segmentation, object detection, and monocular depth estimation. Other networks combine the camera views into a birds-eye-style representation of road layout, fixed infrastructure, and three-dimensional objects. The vehicle then uses that interpretation to plan a path and control its motion.
Tesla’s safety-report material describes vehicles using eight external cameras for a 360-degree view, although the exact camera and computer configuration varies by vehicle. FSD software is delivered through over-the-air updates, so behavior can change after an update without a hardware change.
Check the FSD computer in your Tesla
On the touchscreen, open:
Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information
Older vehicles with FSD Computer 2.0 or 2.5 may qualify for a complimentary upgrade to FSD Computer 3.0 if the owner purchased FSD. That complimentary upgrade does not automatically apply to subscribers, although a subscriber may be eligible to pay for an upgrade.
How much does Tesla FSD cost?
As of August 9, 2026, Tesla lists FSD (Supervised) in the U.S. at:
- $99 per month
- $1,188 for 12 months, before applicable taxes
Tesla’s current U.S. support page lists FSD as a subscription rather than an outright purchase. Some used Teslas still have legacy purchased FSD, however, so a used-car buyer should not assume that every vehicle is subscription-only.
Subscribe to FSD
From the Tesla app, go to:
Upgrades > Software Upgrades > Subscribe > Add
From the car’s touchscreen, go to:
Controls > Upgrades
If the vehicle is eligible, Tesla will show the subscription option. The car may need to complete an over-the-air update before FSD becomes available.

Check whether a used Tesla includes FSD
On the touchscreen, open Controls > Software. Look for Full Self Driving Capability under the included package and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Software under Software.
Do not rely solely on a seller’s listing. Tesla’s FSD Transfer Program ended on March 31, 2026, and a buyer should not assume a purchased license can be moved to another car or Tesla Account. If the prior owner subscribed, the new owner must subscribe independently. If FSD was purchased and remains attached to the vehicle, verify that entitlement before treating it as part of the deal.

How to turn on and use FSD
- Open Controls > Self-Driving > Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
- Read and accept the displayed agreements.
- Tap Start Self-Driving when the system is available.
- Confirm that “Self-Driving” appears in blue and that the blue path line is displayed.
- Continue supervising the road and be prepared to take control immediately.
Tesla says FSD can be engaged below 85 mph, subject to the vehicle’s conditions and configuration. The exact physical control varies by model. For example, some cars use a right scroll-button press, while stalk-equipped and stalkless vehicles use different controls. The owner’s manual for your specific model takes priority.
To disengage, press the brake pedal, move the gear stalk upward if equipped, press the right steering-wheel scroll wheel if equipped, or take over by steering manually.
FSD settings you can change
Speed Profile
Find the setting at:
Controls > Self-Driving > Speed Profile
- Sloth: slower driving and fewer lane changes
- Chill: slower lanes and minimal lane changes
- Standard: normal speed and traffic-flow matching
- Hurry: faster driving and more frequent lane changes
- Mad Max: faster than Hurry and more frequent lane changes
A more assertive profile does not make FSD more autonomous. It can simply make the vehicle change lanes more often or drive at a higher pace, which may give you less time to evaluate an unexpected maneuver.
HOV lanes
To control whether FSD uses high-occupancy-vehicle lanes, open:
Controls > Navigation > Use HOV Lanes
Where FSD can struggle
The most important limitation is not that FSD never works. It is that a successful drive does not prove the next drive will be safe without supervision. Conditions change, road layouts are ambiguous, and the car’s visual interpretation can be wrong.
Tesla specifically warns drivers to be ready to intervene around:
- Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, and other unpredictable road users
- Unprotected turns across fast traffic
- Multi-lane turns or simultaneous lane changes
- Narrow roads with oncoming vehicles
- Double-parked cars, open doors, trailers, ramps, or protruding cargo
- High-speed merges
- Construction zones and road debris
- Sharp curves, especially at higher speeds
- Rain, snow, fog, glare, low light, or direct sunlight
Camera condition is a practical issue. Dirt, ice, condensation, snow, glare, or an accessory blocking a camera can reduce performance or make FSD unavailable. Keep the cameras clean and unobstructed; calibration may also be required after certain repairs.
FSD may not start from Park if the driver is not detected, the seat belt is unbuckled, a door, trunk, or frunk is open, a charging cable is connected, or Valet Mode or Track Mode is active. Tesla warns against devices intended to defeat occupancy detection; using them can violate the terms of use and result in permanent feature disablement.
On some vehicles, headlights must be set to On or Auto. The system may be unavailable or abort if the headlights are off.

Do not treat a green visualization or a normal-looking route as proof that the car has correctly understood an intersection. Tesla’s manual says the driver must not assume FSD will always decide correctly whether to stop or proceed.
NHTSA opened preliminary evaluation PE25012 on October 7, 2025, after receiving reports involving possible traffic-law violations. The listed concerns included proceeding through red lights or failing to remain stopped, misreading traffic signals, entering opposing lanes, crossing double-yellow lines, driving the wrong way despite wrong-way signs, going straight from a turn-only lane, turning from a through lane, and giving the driver too little warning to intervene.

This is an investigation, not a final finding that FSD is defective in every situation. It is nevertheless a useful reminder that the driver must watch the actual road rather than simply monitor the car’s screen.

Tesla uses visual and audio warnings to detect inattentiveness. Repeated warnings can produce a strikeout, which disengages the system for the rest of that trip.
Tesla says access can be suspended for one week after three or five strikeouts, depending on the vehicle configuration. A strikeout may be forgiven after half a week if no additional strikeout occurs. You can view the remaining count at:
Controls > Self-Driving
Monitoring varies by Tesla. Some cars check steering-wheel torque, while vehicles with an interior camera may use cabin-camera monitoring. Do not try to defeat either system; the warnings are there because FSD requires active supervision.
Is Tesla FSD worth $99 per month?
For the right driver, the monthly plan is a reasonable way to test FSD without making a large permanent purchase. The strongest test is not a short, impressive demo on an easy road. Use it on your actual commute, errands, turns, and parking situations while paying attention to how often you must intervene.

| Drive frequently where the feature is available | Expect the car to drive while you stop supervising |
| Value lower workload on routine routes | Mostly want highway cruise control and lane centering |
| Can remain attentive for every mile | Regularly drive through construction or poor weather |
| Want to test current software month to month | Find frequent interventions stressful or distracting |
| Can use a trial, demo, or one-month subscription | Your vehicle lacks compatible hardware or regional access |
If all you want is adaptive cruise control and highway lane centering, Tesla’s broader Autopilot equipment may cover that basic use case. FSD’s extra cost is mainly paying for supervised city-street navigation, automated turns, route-based lane changes, and related functions.
Tesla publishes collision-rate data for periods when FSD is engaged. That data should be treated as Tesla’s own telemetry analysis, not independent proof that FSD prevents crashes. Tesla counts a collision as FSD-engaged when the system was active at any point in the preceding five seconds, does not assign fault, and compares populations and conditions that may differ.
FAQ
Is Tesla FSD actually self-driving?
No. FSD (Supervised) is an SAE Level 2 driver-assistance system. The driver must remain attentive, obey traffic laws, and be ready to take over at all times.
How much is Tesla FSD?
As of August 9, 2026, Tesla lists the U.S. subscription at $99 per month or $1,188 for 12 months before applicable taxes. Pricing and availability can change by market and vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use Tesla FSD in bad weather?
You may be able to engage it, but rain, snow, fog, glare, low light, ice, and dirty or obstructed cameras can reduce performance or make the system unavailable. You must be prepared to drive manually.
Should I buy a used Tesla because it has FSD?
Verify the entitlement on the touchscreen and in the Tesla Account before paying extra. A prior owner’s subscription does not transfer, and Tesla’s FSD Transfer Program ended March 31, 2026.
The Bottom Line
Tesla FSD is an impressive but imperfect supervised-driving system. It can handle many parts of a mapped trip, including city turns, traffic lights, lane changes, highway transitions, and parking, but it remains capable of mistakes that require immediate driver intervention. At $99 per month, it is worth considering as a trial or convenience feature for drivers who use it often and stay fully engaged. It is not worth the cost—and is dangerous to use—if what you really want is a car that drives unattended.
