The company’s widely reported milestone of more than 8 billion miles was announced on February 18, 2026, so it is an earlier snapshot—not the current total. These are miles driven with a supervised driver-assistance feature, not proof of driverless operation.
How many miles has Tesla FSD driven?
Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) product page displayed 15,241,193,908 miles driven when checked on October 8, 2026. That is a live counter, not a dated annual statistic. Tesla says it increments at the average rate of fleet mileage per second and may not reflect mileage increases from fleet growth and free trials.
The headline figure of more than 8 billion cumulative miles refers to an earlier milestone Tesla announced on February 18, 2026. Contemporaneous reporting covered the announcement the following day. The two figures describe the counter at different dates, rather than conflicting totals.
What does “FSD (Supervised)” mean?
The name matters: Tesla describes the product as Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and says currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make a vehicle autonomous. Tesla Support puts it plainly: “None of these advanced driver-assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” The driver remains responsible for paying attention and operating the vehicle.

Accordingly, the cumulative mileage records use of Tesla’s supervised driving features. It should not be described as miles traveled autonomously or as evidence that the system can safely replace a driver.
What the mileage figure does—and does not—show
A large cumulative total indicates that the features have been used across many miles. By itself, however, it does not establish how safe they are, how often they avoid or contribute to collisions, or how their performance compares with a human driver. Those questions require collision-rate data, clearly defined events, comparable driving conditions, and an understanding of how the data were collected.

Tesla publishes a separate Vehicle Safety Report. Its collision-rate analysis is not simply a division of total lifetime FSD miles by total collisions: Tesla says overall FSD mileage goes back to 2020, while collision-rate metrics use a rolling 12-month aggregation updated quarterly. The live cumulative counter and the report’s rolling comparison therefore answer different questions and cover different time windows.
How Tesla defines collisions in its safety report
Tesla uses anonymous mileage telemetry and safety-critical collision telemetry. Its report distinguishes major collisions involving deployment of a non-reversible restraint from minor collisions that meet a cited Delta-V threshold without such deployment. Tesla cites the U.S. regulation 49 C.F.R. § 563.5, which uses a threshold of 8 km/h Delta-V within 150 milliseconds.

For its collision-rate analysis, Tesla counts a collision as involving FSD if the system was active at any point in the five seconds before the event. This can include an incident in which the driver disengaged FSD or the system aborted shortly before impact. Tesla says it does not assign fault in its collision reporting; “involving FSD” is not a finding that FSD caused the crash.

Tesla compares FSD collision rates with manually driven Teslas with active safety features and manually driven Teslas without them. It also estimates a U.S. average using Federal Highway Administration mileage and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collision data. That U.S. figure is a modeled estimate, not a directly measured FSD result.

The report identifies important limits, including differences in data collection and reporting criteria, incidents that may go unreported, sample sizes, fleet distribution, vehicle connectivity, and damage that can prevent a vehicle from communicating after a collision. Its highway and non-highway classifications may also differ from other definitions. For context, the report cites NHTSA’s estimate that about 71.7% of U.S. crashes in the 2023 CRSS data involved property damage only; that describes the broader crash dataset, not Tesla FSD outcomes.
To assess a safety comparison, check that the groups use comparable control types, collision-severity definitions, road settings, reporting periods, and data sources. A cumulative mileage milestone supplies none of those comparisons on its own.
