Those figures are specific to that 2023 report.
How much did Tesla cut Model S and Model X prices?
Engadget reported reductions of 15% to 19% across the Model S and Model X lineup on September 1, 2023. The report listed starting prices of $74,990 for the Model S and $79,990 for the Model X. The discount varied by trim, so “nearly 20 percent” describes the largest reported cuts rather than a uniform reduction across every version. Engadget’s September 2023 report is the source for those figures.

How did the September cuts differ from Tesla’s earlier 2023 price changes?
Tesla had changed prices earlier that year, but those figures belong to a separate event. Cars.com reported on March 6, 2023, that the base dual-motor Model S was $91,380 and the base Model X was $101,380. Those prices included a $1,390 destination charge and excluded tax credits. Cars.com listed both Plaid versions at $111,380. Cars.com’s March 2023 report documents that earlier pricing.
Because the March and September reports cover different dates and price changes, combining their figures can give a misleading impression of one continuous discount. When comparing historical prices, keep the date, trim, and any included destination charge attached to each number.

What did the 2023 price changes mean for federal tax credits?
In its September 2023 coverage, Car and Driver said the Model X could fall under the then-applicable U.S. federal EV-credit MSRP ceiling of $80,000, while the Model S exceeded the $55,000 ceiling for cars. That was a description of the rules and prices at the time, not current tax advice. Eligibility depends on the law in effect, vehicle configuration, buyer circumstances, and other requirements. Check current government guidance before relying on an incentive.
Are Model S or Model X prices being cut now?
The September 2023 headline does not establish current U.S. pricing. Tesla’s China promotions page, updated September 25, 2026, lists discounts on qualifying Model S and Model X inventory configurations for orders placed from September 7 through October 31, 2026. The offer is limited to China, and terms depend on factors including model year or version, inventory status, paid configuration, and purchase conditions. It is not evidence of a U.S. or global price cut. Tesla China’s promotions page sets out those local offer terms.

- Use the same country or market and the same pricing date.
- Compare the exact model year, trim, and configuration.
- Check whether destination and delivery charges are included.
- Account for paid options, inventory status, and order conditions.
- Separate the vehicle’s listed price from any incentive, and verify current eligibility with official sources.
A historical starting price, a trim-specific listing, and a market-limited inventory promotion answer different questions; they should not be presented as one current price.
