Tesla Challenges $243 Million Autopilot Verdict: What Happens Next

Tesla is appealing a $242,570,000 federal judgment over a fatal 2019 Florida crash. Here’s what the jury decided, why the judge denied Tesla’s post-trial request and what the available appeal docket shows.

Tesla is appealing a federal judgment of $242,570,000 over a fatal 2019 Florida crash involving a Model S and allegations concerning Autopilot. A jury found Tesla 33% responsible and awarded damages; a federal judge denied Tesla’s request to set the verdict aside or grant a new trial. The appeal is pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, but the docket information available through September 9, 2026 does not establish what happened after that date.

Why is Tesla challenging the $243 million verdict?

Tesla’s challenge has two stages: a post-trial request in the federal district court that heard the case, followed by an appeal after that court denied relief. Tesla argued that evidence and trial proceedings did not support the result and asked for judgment in its favor, a new trial or a reduced judgment. Those were Tesla’s arguments, not findings by the court. The district court rejected the request. (District court order, Feb. 20, 2026; TechCrunch, Aug. 29, 2025)

After the verdict, Tesla said it intended to appeal, citing “given the substantial errors of law and irregularities at trial,” as reported by the Associated Press. That statement described Tesla’s position; it was not a court ruling. (Associated Press, Aug. 1, 2025)

What did the jury decide, and how does the amount add up?

The lawsuit followed a 2019 Florida crash involving a Tesla Model S. Neima Benavides, representing the estate of Naibel Benavides Leon, and injured passenger Dillon Angulo brought claims that included defective design and failure to warn. The jury found Tesla 33% responsible, assigning the remaining share to the driver in the verdict account. That allocation is the jury’s finding in this case, not a general conclusion about driver-assistance technology. (District court order; Associated Press)

On Aug. 1, 2025, the jury awarded the plaintiffs $129 million in total compensatory damages and $200 million in punitive damages. Tesla’s 33% share of compensatory damages was reported as $43 million; adding the punitive award produced the commonly reported $243 million figure. The court’s final judgment, entered Aug. 3, 2025, was $242,570,000. The headline figure is a rounded description; the judgment amount is the precise court figure. (Associated Press, Aug. 1, 2025; District court order)

Did the judge overturn Tesla’s verdict?

No. Tesla asked the district court for judgment as a matter of law or, alternatively, a new trial or an amended judgment reducing damages. On Feb. 20, 2026, the court denied that post-trial request, finding that Tesla’s arguments did not justify setting aside the jury’s verdict or granting the requested relief. The judgment therefore remained in place after the district-court ruling, subject to appeal. (District court order, Document 612)

What happens next in Tesla’s Autopilot appeal?

Tesla filed its notice of appeal on March 16, 2026. The case is listed in the Eleventh Circuit as No. 26-10858. The docket listing retrieved Sept. 9, 2026 records Tesla’s opening brief, filed July 2, and an extension allowing the appellees through Sept. 16 to file their response. That listing predates the extended deadline, so it does not establish whether the response was filed, whether reply briefing is complete, or whether oral argument has been scheduled. No later outcome can be confirmed from that record. (Eleventh Circuit docket listing, retrieved Sept. 9, 2026)

The appeal is a separate stage from the jury trial and the district court’s post-trial ruling. The available docket information confirms that Tesla filed an opening brief, but it does not provide its contents. The district court order is the basis for describing Tesla’s earlier post-trial arguments; it should not be treated as a summary of Tesla’s appellate brief or the plaintiffs’ response. The appeal’s eventual result is not established by the cited docket listing.

What this case does—and does not—show about Autopilot

This is a case-specific verdict and judgment arising from one crash and the claims tried in court. The jury’s allocation and the district court’s ruling do not, by themselves, establish a general technical or safety conclusion about Autopilot or current Tesla vehicles.
