U.S. Route 20 is a 3,365-mile east–west journey from Boston, Massachusetts, to Newport, Oregon, according to the Federal Highway Administration’s account of the 1989 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials highway log. It is not one uninterrupted highway: Yellowstone National Park separates its eastern and western sections. Plan for a changing sequence of towns, landscapes and regional side trips—not a single expressway or a universally fixed number of driving days.
What makes Route 20 a classic road trip?
Route 20’s appeal is the variety along its cross-country corridor. It links communities and landscapes across the northern United States, making the journey as much about choosing where to pause as about covering distance. The experience will vary by region; one documented example is New York’s designated scenic-byway segment, not a claim that every mile has the same character.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reports the route’s length as 3,365 miles, citing the 1989 AASHO U.S. numbered highway log. Treat that as an attributed historical figure, not a newly measured mileage or a promise about the distance of a modern door-to-door itinerary. Your actual trip can differ with park routing, local roads and detours. FHWA’s explanation of the country’s longest road gives the historical basis.
Does Route 20 go through Yellowstone?
No. The U.S. 20 designation does not continue through Yellowstone National Park. FHWA explains that numbered U.S. highways are not designated through national parks: the eastern section ends at Yellowstone’s eastern entrance, and the western section begins at its western entrance. If you want to travel between the two sections, plan the park crossing as a separate part of your journey rather than assuming Route 20 carries you through it. The route’s endpoints, as reported by FHWA, are Boston and Newport, Oregon. FHWA’s route description sets out the discontinuity.

How Route 20 reached the Pacific
In the original 1925 plan, U.S. 20 was proposed to run from Boston to Astoria, Oregon. After the western route was negotiated, the highway initially stopped at Yellowstone. FHWA says it was extended west of the park in 1940, and that it became the country’s longest road in 1963, after U.S. 6’s terminus was shortened. The current endpoint FHWA gives is Newport, Oregon. The agency’s history of U.S. 20 provides this chronology.
A documented scenic stretch: Route 20 in New York
The Route 20 Association of New York State identifies 108 miles between Duanesburg and LaFayette as a designated New York State Scenic Byway. It describes historic communities, scenic landscapes, farms and local markets along the corridor, with excursion routes for exploring nearby places. This is a useful example of the kind of slower, locally focused travel Route 20 can offer; it is not a complete guide to attractions across all the states on the route. Plan the trip around your time and priorities
There is no single evidence-based number of days needed to drive Route 20. The right schedule depends on how much time you want behind the wheel versus out of the car, which towns and landscapes interest you, how many regional detours you want, and whether Yellowstone is a separate destination on your itinerary.

- For a drive-focused crossing: Keep stops and detours limited, and allow your schedule to reflect the route’s Yellowstone discontinuity.
- For a town-and-scenery trip: Choose a few regions to explore in depth instead of trying to treat every state as a quick stop.
- For a Yellowstone visit: Build a distinct park segment into the plan; the U.S. 20 designation itself does not traverse the park.
A printed U.S. road atlas can be a useful planning backup for a long journey. Pair it with current official route and park information; a general atlas should not be assumed to contain a dedicated U.S. 20 itinerary. The New York association’s maps and route-numbered excursions can help with that region, including when you reverse them for east-to-west travel. Route 20 Association of New York State.

The route’s history and broad geography do not establish whether a specific road is open on a particular day. Before departure, check current state road advisories for the segments you intend to drive. If you plan to visit Yellowstone, verify current park access, regulations and seasonal conditions through official park information; check local attraction hours directly as well. These details can change and need a fresh check when you plan and travel.
