If one Suzuki motorcycle deserves another look, it is the SV650. Suzuki introduced it in 1999 as an affordable, fun middleweight, and its lasting appeal comes from a useful mix: a distinctive V-twin, approachable everyday manners, touring flexibility and a history in club racing. Calling it “most underrated” is an opinion, not a proven popularity ranking—but the case for reconsidering it is strong.
Why the SV650 still makes a compelling case
The SV650 was designed to do more than one job. Suzuki Motorcycles UK’s 2024 retrospective describes the original as a characterful, robust and affordable middleweight offered in naked and half-faired forms. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not an independent reliability guarantee, but they point to the bike’s intended role: a road motorcycle with enough personality to reward an enthusiast without demanding specialist use.

The 2016-model technical release specifies a liquid-cooled, DOHC 645 cm³ 90-degree V-twin. Suzuki highlighted its linear midrange torque, slim chassis and Low RPM Assist, which it said “helps rider in launching and running at lower rpm.” It also specified Suzuki Easy Start and a 785 mm seat height. Together, these features help explain why the SV can feel approachable at low speed while retaining the character of a V-twin.

That is a laboratory-cycle result, not a promise of real-world consumption or a figure that should be applied to every model year. Suzuki Motor Corporation’s SV650/A3 press information is the reference for those dated specifications.

How its history shaped its reputation
Suzuki says the SV650 launched in 1999, with the second generation arriving in 2003. The company’s UK retrospective reports 2,549 sales in the first year and 2,939 the following year, followed by 2,266 sales when the second generation was introduced. These are Suzuki Motorcycles UK figures about the UK launch period, not global sales totals or evidence of current popularity.
The line continued through fuel-injected versions and the SFV650, also known as the Gladius, before the naked SV650 returned in 2016. The SV650X followed in 2018 with café-racer styling, dropped handlebars and a ribbed seat. In recounting the model’s history, Suzuki also points to its place in tightly regulated club-racing twin classes and participation in the Isle of Man TT. Its appeal is therefore not confined to commuting: it has served ordinary road use and enthusiast pursuits without being built solely as a track or touring specialist. What “another chance” looks like against newer bikes
The SV650’s relative simplicity is both its charm and its clearest compromise. In a dated October 2023 comparison, Visordown described the SV as light, agile and easy to use day to day, with easygoing power delivery and a light clutch. The same comparison noted that it lacks traction control, has basic ABS and non-adjustable conventional forks, and feels less capable when pushed hard than the newer GSX-8S. Those are the publication’s road-test impressions, not a guarantee of how every rider or model year will feel.

|---|---|---|
| Character and use | Simpler, more classic roadster feel; described as light and easygoing in everyday riding. | Newer roadster with a more modern equipment package. |
| Electronics and suspension | No traction control; basic ABS and non-adjustable conventional forks, according to Visordown. | Described by Visordown as better equipped; the comparison does not establish every market’s exact specification. |
| Performance and hard riding | Less capable when pushed hard, in Visordown’s assessment. | Described as more powerful and better suited to demanding riding. |
That comparison is a useful way to frame the choice, not a universal verdict. A newer, better-equipped motorcycle may be the better fit if adjustable suspension, added electronics or stronger performance matter most. The SV makes more sense if an uncomplicated roadster, approachable controls and V-twin character are higher priorities. Assess the specific bikes, their condition and your intended riding rather than treating age alone as a measure of quality. Visordown’s 2023 SV650 and GSX-8S comparison explains its road-test judgments.

Is the SV650 a good everyday motorcycle?
It has a credible everyday-use case: Suzuki’s 2016-model specifications emphasize midrange delivery, a slim chassis, low-rpm assistance and a relatively low 785 mm seat. The 2023 Visordown comparison also describes light handling, a light clutch and easygoing power delivery in day-to-day riding. Those observations make it a reasonable candidate for riders who want a flexible middleweight rather than a highly specialized machine.
For longer rides, Suzuki’s retrospective points to comfort, pillion capability and accessories for touring. That establishes that touring-oriented equipment has been available, not that every SV650 variant comes equipped for touring. Check the exact bike’s seat, luggage setup, wind protection and accessory fitment—especially across different years and variants—before assuming a used example will meet those needs.

What to verify before buying
The SV650’s availability and specifications vary by region and model year. The available history does not establish that it remains on sale everywhere, nor that it has been discontinued everywhere. Suzuki’s 2024 retrospective is a history, not a current global model-range list; a September 2026 buyer guide likewise describes regional and model-year changes rather than settling worldwide availability. Confirm the new-bike status with your local Suzuki importer and check the documentation for the exact year and variant you are considering.
- Identify the generation and variant. Distinguish among naked, half-faired, SFV650/Gladius and SV650X versions; equipment and fitment can differ.
- Check the actual specification. Do not assume the 2016-model seat height, fuel-consumption result or equipment applies unchanged to another year or market.
- Match accessories to the bike. Confirm model-year and variant fitment for luggage or other touring accessories rather than relying on a general SV650 label.
- Buy on condition and intended use. A used bike’s maintenance and condition matter alongside the model’s broad reputation; inspect the individual motorcycle and its records.
For historical context and a used-bike overview, MotoFomo’s SV650 history and buyer guide was updated on 7 September 2026. Use it alongside the local importer’s current range information and the exact motorcycle’s model-year documentation.
