Survue Uses Computer Vision to Warn Cyclists About Vehicles on a Collision Course—but It’s Still a Pilot

Survue’s camera-based bicycle safety light aims to distinguish ordinary passing traffic from vehicles on potentially dangerous trajectories. Here’s how it compares with radar and current alternatives.

Survue is an emerging rear-facing bicycle taillight that uses a camera and computer-vision software to assess approaching vehicles. The company says it can estimate a vehicle’s position and speed, identify its type, project its trajectory, warn the cyclist about a potentially dangerous approach, change its flashing pattern and record the encounter.

That is more ambitious than a conventional bicycle radar. But Survue should not be described as a proven crash-prevention system: as of August 18, 2026, its website describes the product as a pilot, and the available sources do not provide independent accuracy, false-alarm, warning-time or crash-reduction data.

How Survue is supposed to work

Survue’s basic operating sequence is intended to look like this:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. A rear-facing camera or visual sensor watches the road behind the bicycle.
  2. On-device computer-vision software detects approaching objects.
  3. The system estimates each vehicle’s position, speed and relative direction.
  4. Its algorithms classify the vehicle and assess whether its projected path appears likely to bring it too close.
  5. The cyclist receives an audible warning, with optional phone-based alerts.
  6. The taillight can flash more rapidly as the approaching vehicle gets closer, a behavior intended to attract the driver’s attention.
  7. Survue records video around a collision or near-miss event.

In plain English, Survue is trying to judge where a vehicle is going, not merely whether something is approaching. That distinction is central to the product’s pitch. A car closing from behind on a clear passing line is different from a vehicle approaching quickly while remaining dangerously close to the cyclist’s path.

  • Details: Includes a detachable tinted visor for protection against sun, wind, and debris, plus a quick-release buckle for easy on and off

However, “predicting” a collision means estimating a trajectory from sensor data. It does not mean the device knows that a crash will happen. Survue’s own product information and terms describe the system as an assistive safety tool that does not replace the rider’s attention, judgment or normal safety practices.

What the AI claim does—and does not—establish

The documented product claims cover several separate functions:

  • Object detection: identifying traffic approaching from behind.
  • Tracking: following an object’s position and movement relative to the bicycle.
  • Classification: determining what type of vehicle may be approaching.
  • Trajectory assessment: estimating whether the vehicle’s path appears hazardous.
  • Alerting: warning the rider and changing the rear light’s behavior.
  • Recording: capturing footage of a close approach or incident.

The available material does not establish a detection accuracy percentage, false-positive rate, missed-vehicle rate, minimum warning lead time or crash-reduction result. Nor does it independently verify how the current pilot hardware performs at night, in rain, on winding roads or in heavy traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That matters because a machine-learning system can be useful without being infallible. A false warning may make a rider anxious or cause distraction; a missed vehicle may create unwarranted confidence. The rider still needs to respond to the road, not blindly follow the device’s classification.

Survue versus conventional bicycle radar

Products such as the Garmin Varia RTL515 use rear-facing radar to detect approaching traffic and report information such as distance or closing movement. Garmin lists detection up to 140 meters and battery life of up to 16 hours in day-flash mode.

Radar and camera-based AI make different trade-offs:

Capability Rear-facing radar Camera and computer vision
Core strength Detecting approaching objects and their movement Interpreting visual context and object type
Vehicle classification Generally limited compared with a visual system Potentially able to distinguish vehicle types
Trajectory interpretation Can provide range and closing information Claims to assess position, passing behavior and projected path
Battery demands Typically favorable for long rides Camera processing and recording can increase power use
Environmental sensitivity Not dependent on visible light in the same way More exposed to darkness, glare, rain, spray, fog and dirty lenses
Video evidence Usually not an integrated feature Can provide footage if recording is implemented effectively

Survue’s concept is therefore not proof that radar has become obsolete. Radar remains attractive to riders who want a mature, low-power warning about rear traffic. A camera system may be more informative when the rider wants vehicle identification, driver-facing signaling and an incident recording function, but it has more visual and software dependencies.

Published Survue specifications

The following are manufacturer-published claims, not independent measurements:

Specification Survue’s current published figure
Dimensions 98 × 40 × 30 mm
Weight 125 g
Battery life Up to 6 hours
Brightness 80 lumens
Visibility claim Visible from 1 mile
Detection distance Up to 130 meters
Connectivity Bluetooth, including third-party-app connectivity

The range figure has changed across coverage: New Atlas reported 110 meters in June 2024, while Survue’s current site lists up to 130 meters. The figures should not be treated as equivalent test results or silently combined.

A six-hour maximum may be adequate for many commutes, but it is less comfortable for an all-day tour. Actual runtime will depend on the light mode, camera recording, wireless connectivity, temperature and other operating conditions.

Video recording is a separate benefit

Survue says it automatically records video leading up to collisions or near misses. Its terms say footage is stored locally and is not automatically uploaded or shared. Earlier reporting described recording to a MicroSD card; that detail belongs to the 2024 Kickstarter-era description unless current pilot hardware documentation confirms it remains unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Footage could be useful when reviewing a close pass, reporting an incident or preserving evidence. It does not automatically prove fault. Its usefulness will depend on resolution, frame rate, stabilization, night performance, camera angle, vibration, lens cleanliness, storage capacity and whether the relevant clip is easy to export.

Recording also raises legal and privacy questions. Rules differ by jurisdiction and may cover audio recording, filming in public, sharing faces or license plates, flashing-light patterns and the use of footage after a collision. Survue places responsibility for complying with applicable privacy and surveillance laws on the user; there is no blanket rule that makes recording legal everywhere.

Where a camera-based system may struggle

Survue’s terms acknowledge that weather, poor lighting and technical interference can affect performance. More generally, a rear camera and AI system may face difficult conditions when:

  • darkness, glare or rapidly changing light reduces useful image detail;
  • rain, snow, road spray, fog or a dirty lens obscures the view;
  • vehicles overlap in dense traffic;
  • a car is hidden behind another vehicle or approaches from an unusual angle;
  • the bicycle is on a sharp bend, hill crest or uneven road;
  • large trucks obscure lane position;
  • motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians or nearby objects are difficult to classify;
  • a parallel road places traffic close to, but not on, the cyclist’s route; or
  • the rider’s body, luggage, trailer or clothing blocks the camera.

A warning is also not the same as an escape route. The system cannot control the driver, create additional road space or guarantee that a driver sees and understands the changing taillight pattern. Looking down at a phone to interpret an alert could itself be hazardous, so audible warnings and normal road awareness remain important.

Survue’s current availability and historical price

The product’s status has changed since the original coverage. New Atlas’s June 28, 2024 report described Survue as a Kickstarter-stage product, citing a US$215 campaign pledge and a planned US$329 retail price.

Those are historical campaign and planned-price figures, not a verified current retail offer. As of August 18, 2026, Survue’s official website says the company has launched a pilot program, invites riders to purchase a discounted pilot part and says a “v2 Pilot” is coming soon. The site does not present the device as a normal, broadly stocked retail accessory with a clearly displayed final price. A separate launch page uses launch-invitation messaging.

That makes Survue best understood as development-stage hardware. Potential pilot-participant risks include changing hardware, unfinished software, limited support, altered firmware behavior and uncertain availability of replacement mounts or other parts. Those are practical consequences of pilot status, not evidence that the company has failed to deliver.

Alternatives available to consider

Garmin Varia RTL515: established radar alerts

The Varia RTL515 is the straightforward choice for riders who primarily want rear-approach warnings. Garmin lists a US$199.99 U.S. price, detection up to 140 meters, up to 16 hours in day-flash mode and compatibility with Garmin devices and smartphones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its trade-off is that it is a radar-and-taillight product, not a camera system claiming to classify vehicles, interpret their trajectories or record incident video. Choose it when long battery life and an established radar approach matter more than visual evidence or AI-style interpretation.

Velo.AI Copilot: the closest conceptual rival

Velo.AI’s Copilot is another AI-powered rear camera and safety light. Its published information lists vehicle and object identification, dangerous-approach versus safe-passing distinctions, audible alerts, driver-facing light patterns, video recording, 1080p video, a 200 g weight and a four-hour battery life. The listed price is US$399.

The product page has also indicated that Copilot was out of stock and described a US$50 deposit or reservation process, with sales limited to the United States. Availability and shipping should therefore be confirmed directly. Compared with Survue’s current published figures, Copilot is heavier and has a shorter listed battery life, although these are manufacturer claims rather than equivalent independent tests.

Garmin Varia Vue: a camera-equipped Garmin option

Garmin’s Varia Vue is not a direct one-for-one Survue substitute: it is a front headlight with an integrated 4K camera and Garmin ecosystem features. Garmin lists a US$549.99 suggested retail price, up to seven hours in day-flash mode with the camera recording, or up to nine hours with the headlight off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It suits riders who want a camera and light from a large cycling ecosystem, but not someone seeking only an affordable rear warning light or a compact rear AI device.

What to check before joining a pilot or buying an AI safety light

  • Availability: Is the offer a finished retail product, pilot, preorder, reservation or waitlist?
  • Performance evidence: Are accuracy, false warnings, missed vehicles and warning lead time published from independent testing?
  • Conditions: How does it perform at night, in rain, around bends, in groups and near parked vehicles?
  • Alert design: Can the warning be understood without looking at a phone, and can it be heard over traffic and wind?
  • Light behavior: Is the flashing pattern legal and comprehensible where you ride?
  • Recording: Check resolution, night quality, stabilization, storage, loop recording, event locking and clip export.
  • Battery: Compare claimed runtime under the same recording and light conditions, and check whether operation while charging is supported.
  • Mounting: Confirm that the listed weight includes or excludes mounts and accessories, and ensure the camera remains unobstructed.
  • Privacy: Understand local rules before recording audio or sharing footage that includes people or license plates.
  • Ecosystem: Check phone, cycling-computer and third-party-app compatibility before assuming a particular alert display will work.
